Yeah for you! I have been bolder about home repair things since the internet--there are so many good how-to videos! Last week my over-the-range microwave handle broke and I replaced it myself using one of those videos.

Good for you, Joann! I did a similar thing when I needed a washing machine hooked up several years ago. I actually came on the plumbing forum on GW. It was my first introduction to GW. Someone there told me how to 'sweat a pipe' which is basically using solder to connect the pipes, and I did it myself!

Wow. Proud of all of you. I used to frequently do stuff like that...my Dad was a Mr.Fix-it..DH didn't know how to use any tool, and between the two of us we solved many a repair problem. Now, DH is pretty good. Solder tho...way too good.

Most things are not as hard as one would imagine. With the right tools - even changing oil in your car is super easy. (most cars anyway)
I am one of six girls...and Daddy's shadow and helper. I thankfully inherited his sense of DIY, patience and common sense.

The biggest problem I have is attempting things I really have no business trying. (mostly things I dont have the strength to do)
Lately I have been contemplating attacking a chain saw the the repair shop said had a scorched cylinder wall. I have nothing to lose really. If I don't fix it myself...a repair shop bill will be more than a new one....

I am truly impressed! I am a Daddy's Girl and helped him with DIY projects from the time I was little (Daddy can fix anything), so I have done a lot of things that are usually just "man jobs" (i.e., plumbing, electrical, construction, etc.)--but I would not tackle a dishwasher. You rock!!

It's cool that so many of us try to do these things. Whoever said that she tackles jobs that she's not strong enough for - add me to that one! I once turned my broken washing machine on its back, thinking I could reverse-engineer a fix. I couldn't.:) But I did install a toilet once. (It's not hard at all, but the toilet is heavy.)

I think it's so helpful to have all the internet sites and videos. I had a few questions yesterday, and when I Googled them, others had asked them before me, and been answered. I figure that I'm at least as smart as average, and if I take my time and follow directions, I can probably do it.

And Susan, that's exactly what I told my sister - more than $40 an hour. I'll take it!

I have a dh that is so handy I've never had to learn stuff like that. I'll be really sol if anything should happen to him. I should've paid more attention to stuff all these years.

I did the same thing with my bathroom sink that needed fixed. It was so clogged it was leaking and all of the pipes underneath needed to be taken apart. It wouldn't have costed me money to call the landlord, as I'm a renter, but I hate calling in the landlords. I found a youtube video on how to do it, and used my boyfriend as a second pair of hands and we did it ourselves.

It's not that complicated of a job to do (fairly simple actually), but when you know nothing about plumbing, it can seem daunting, so I was pretty proud of myself.

I think there are youtube videos or instructions out there to show you how to do everything. I've used videos on making things, fixing things, how to do certain hairstyles, etc, etc.

I know the feeling! Seems like every time something would break down here, Jody was away on the boat and wouldn't be back for two weeks. I had to change the switch on the water well pump. It takes him less than five minutes. I am uneasy with electricity, but I drew diagrams, took my time and hooked it up. I had to reprime the pump, but I'd done that before, so at least I knew I wouldn't be without water or have to call someone out here to do a five minute job....although it probably took me an hour or longer.

My Sis and her daughter installed one while her husband was laughing at them. He said it would probably flood the house. They had one small drip, tightened it and worked fine. They install almost everything.

There was no 'man of the house' when I grew up. My father was off raising another family. Fortunately, my mother was a confident woman who showed me that 'girls' could learn to do 'stuff'. WE didn't tackle major repairs -- mostly just handy-man tasks, but it was more than most girls do -- and more than my DH ever learned as a boy. (Don't you hate it when the repairman insists on talking to "The Mister", when he hasn't a CLUE, but YOU DO?)

Chisue, I live in an area that I struggle with this SO often! One time I was buying a bike (ladies) and went to a Mennonite owned bike shop. The owner started telling DH all about the bike, the features and so on. I put up with it for a while, but every time I asked a question, he answered DH! I finally told him "He's not riding or buying this bike, I am!" and walked out.
DH just shrugged to the guy and followed me. He was very supportive.
My mother would have done the same thing.

Btw, it only took six hours because I was compulsively careful. And it includes 3-4 hours of prep, reading, and watching videos. I was afraid I'd break the new dishwasher!
