Socks I made for my niece may be too big...boo hoo...

My newest addiction is knitting socks. My niece has been deployed to Iraq, so along with knitting a regulation pair of socks, I made her a pair of really nice purple cable socks. But I wanted them to be a surprise, so her mom said she wore a size 8 - 8.5. They're done and a friend at work who wears a size 8 tried them on, they're about 1/2 inch too big. They're superwash wool, and nylon, so they won't shrink. My niece happens to be home on leave, so I'm hoping I can get her over to try them on and see. I may have to knit her a new pair, but DARN, they're so cute. Now I may have to find someone else go gift them too.

Forgot to add...I made them toe up...so I can't just rip out the toe and shorten them..darn!!

OBF Ladies, So I just FINALLY got done at school. Last day for students was yesterday. I spent all day today moving to my new room for next year. I came home with such a sense of relief and freedom. I always check the mail when I come home and couldn't figure out what Bluestone Perennials had sent me in a large envelope. I came into the a/c, poured a glass of iced tea and opened the envelope. It was a $50 gift certificate from Maryanne! First let me say how wonderful this is. I couldn't wait to be done with school to get back out to my gardens. Now I can get out to the gardens and spend my summer planning what to order for fall planting (which is preferred here over spring planting)!!!! I have never been so excited by a surprise since probably when Santa used to visit me! Now let me say to Maryanne, I am so very appreciative of this that I can't even say. I absolutely love it and am stunned by your generosity. BUT I feel very bad. I could have waited as long as you needed. We still want you to hang around and trade with us without feeling obligated to do this if you are behind on a trade. We've all been there and understand. That is why I feel so bad. You were so generous but I truly hope you did not feel obligated. In any case, I couldn't be more thrilled and am off to puruse the catalog now. And here I was worried that the box hadn't arrived and was sweltering in the heat somewhere :)You have made my summer dreams come true! Theresa

Hello fellow MNFers! Spring has definitely sprung to summer today in NYC. People are in shorts & sandals with 81'F & sunshine! Begonias are out. Marigolds out. Peonies in all colors out. My jasmine bloomed its first bloom this morning - like heaven. Glad to see there were a lot of surprises in the boxes. I also thought my box would be obvious, but I guess that's what makes the world interesting, is that we all live in different gardens around the world. Beth I'm sorry I had to cut a lot of the foxgloves down to fit in the box. They weren't so big when I was planning the box, but they grew gigantuan in the weeks of steady rain we've had & I couldn't find a bigger box to send. Linda OH glad your daughter and her baby are ok, my sister once had a bad miscarriage and ran fever for the better part of a week and was quite ill, so thankful ya'll were spared that. Thanks Donna and Sharon. Donna hope you post a pic of your sister's b-day quilt once you get it finished. LindaB/CA new flowerbeds sounds like fun. Jackie that looks like a really fun toy to play with! Maryv I have never had the opportunity to play a Accuquilt Go, but it does sound like fun. With all that bad weather coming our way, Louisiana, Wednesday, we decided to come home today shortening our trip. We had a good trip, but figured it was best to be safe, to avoid the bad weather. Aside from a few maintenance issues we had a really good trip. The kids had a blast and the water balloon fight turned in to a whole family event with all ages getting soaken wet, we were 14 very wet people. I did get a lot of hand-embroidery work done on my Grandma's pillowcases and did get a little reading done in one of the Elm Creek Quilts novel Round Robin. It was a fun trip, but I am exhausted. Got home and spent the better part of a hour unloading the RV and have washed/dried 2 loads of laundry and still have 7 more to go which will no doubt continue into Wednesday assuming we don't lose power from bad weather. Came home and the Easter Lilies and my orange peanut cactus were blooming; haven't been to the back yard flowerbed yet to see what's in bloom there, but will check on that in a little bit. I guarantee you she will want them! Lucky niece!

I wonder if that's why most socks are made with the toe last? So it's easier to adjust for size... My mom used to make us socks to wear around the house, they were too thick to wear with shoes, we loved them. We'd wear 'em out and she'd fix the holes for us.

I know your neice will love them. Your post reminded me of my dear Aunt, she made a spread for my cousin's bed. I guess she got carried away, much later when it was done, she discovered she had made it 12 ft. long!!!! I think she and my Mother cut it and sewed a binding on that end. Of course I don't imagine that looked too good. I didn't see the finished spread. A half inch I wouldn't think would make much difference, better a bit big than a bit small.

If your niece's feet are wider than the person who tried them on, they still might work for her. You should send them anyway.

My first pair of socks was very large, not just in length but all over. I use them as sleeping socks when my feet are cold, and they are wonderful for that.

Maybe she could trace her foot and send a copy to you for future socks. Trace it while she is standing.

Tell her if they are just too big then she can pass them along to a friend. This is about more than socks, right? You are supporting our troops, and thank you!

Vickey, you CAN fix those socks to fit. With a yarn needle, thread a piece of yarn (essentially a lifeline) through the stitches a half inch further back than where you started your toe decreases, then cut the sock off a couple of rows before your lifeline (on the side closest to the toe) and unravel the yarn until you get to the row with the yarn threaded through it. Then just slide those stitches onto your needle(s) and knit another toe. If you don't have enough yarn to do that, then snip open the toe and unravel all the way back to your lifeline and reknit the toe. It's more tedious that way, but you'll have the socks you wanted when you're done.
