Liquids must be less than 3 oz each. Lip gloss counts as a liquid. Tape over the Bare Escentuals holes. Fold over the tape edge so you can remove it easily, store it on the outside of the jar, and then put it back over the holes when you are ready to return. No perfume unless it is under 3 oz, and it must be put in the ziplock with the other liquids and placed separately in the tub with your shoes, purse, etc for the xray. All the carry-on liquids must fit into one small ziplock bag. You have to take your shoes off and put them through the xray machine, so make sure that you can slip out of them easily. They xray all your carry on. Crochet hook is ok. No water bottles either.

I would put the crochet needles in the checked luggage, along with the perfume. When I flew to SF last month I put all makeup and toiletries in my checked luggage. It was so much easier. On one of my trips last year, I put gels and liquids in a one gallon clear zip lock bag instead of a one quart zip lock. The TSA went thru all my undies, etc., right there in front of everyone, lecturing me the whole time. I was so embarrassed.

They check random carry-on bags - not just because they are suspicious. Frankly, for a weekend away from home, I can't imagine why you would need to check a bag! I've gone overseas for a 2-week trip with just a carry-on.

I have never cared if they want to sort through my stuff - I'm not hiding anything, and if they want to root around in my grannie panties, well, just go ahead.

I do pack in zip-lock type bags. Undies in one, bras in another, makeup and other toiletries in a third and forth. Clothes folded or rolled. The searchers can then lift out bags, and examine them without disturbing the contents too much.

As Linda noted above, it's a QUART size zip lock bag.

Great idea about packing in zip lock type bags -- can use them on return for dirty undies. I'm sure TSA appreciates that! ;)

Mascara is considered a liquid. It must be in your small zip lock bag in your carry-on. The containers don't have to be clear, but they must be 3 oz or less. I usually buy the little travel-sized shampoo, lotion and toothpaste to pack.

Perfume in your purse is a no, no. They'll make you put it in the zip lock, or toss it if it is too big.

Of course you don't have to worry about any of it if you carry only your purse and crochet on the plane and check everything else.

I travel light and hadn't checked a bag in 20 years (after a lost luggage experience) until a recent trip with two connecting flights. Traveling alone, without DH's brawn, I didn't feel like dragging my carry-on through three airports so I checked everything. It was nice to walk around with just my purse and a book.

Some airlines are now charging a hefty fee to check luggage.

Watch the weight limit. These days there is an extra charge for overweight luggage. There is a limit on the number of pieces that can be checked through on one ticket. There is a size limit for carry-on luggage. (It must be able to fit into the overhead compartments or under the seat.)

Ask a travel agent to supply you with the carry-on rules. Query the web sites of airlines you plan to use to find their rules for luggage.

Try not to be the last person to enter the plane if you have carry-on that you wish to stash in the overhead. If you are near the last, there may not be room in the overhead.

I suspect that with airlines charging for the first checked bag, the overheads are going to be filled even faster. Boarding and deplaning are going to take forever and be a nightmare.

We lost a bag for two days on our trip this summer, but we also changed planes twice.
If it is a direct flight and if you get to the airport on time, the chances of misplaced luggage are greatly reduced, although not eliminated.
Keep in mind that it is 3oz package no 3oz of product, so saying "But there's only an oz of perfume left!" (in a 7 oz bottle, won't fly, literally.
Go ahead and through a change of clothing in that carry on, it will practically guarantee that your checked luggage makes it on time!
Have fun! It sounds stressful and like there's a lot to remember, but in the end, it is not all that big of a deal.

I bought 2 gallon size ziplock bags. I put all clothes folded in a baggie. They can lift up each package with no problem. In case of spillage all your clothes will be safe. I'll never fly again without doing this.

Okay, I have some packing things I have already got together since I am leaving for California on
Friday morning. So, could you tell me if I have done some things wrong, please?
I am not putting any liquids in my carry on everything is going into a plastic bag inside my
check on bag such as (bag 1)shampoo, conditioner, body wash, (bag 2) adhesive and tablets for my dentals,
(bag 3)disposable razor, shaving cream and body lotion. My carry on will only have an extra pair of
shoes, magazines, envelope of pictures, waist pocketbook, maybe my camera case and my cell
phone charger. In my pocket book will be my wallet, camera, datebook, pens, small notebook,
small telephone book and my eyeliner with mascara and of course my money paper and change.
Please let me know what I need to change if anything. All my liquids are over three ounces.
This is only my second flight and I am more organized plus it is a longer flight.

Deb - Your eyeliner (if liquid) and your mascara are considered liquids. They need to go into a quart sized zip lock and put through the xray machine outside of your carry on bag. You did not mention lipstick or chapstick, but throw that in there too.
Just a reminder - never pack prescription medications in checked luggage and never put anything that would break your heart to lose in checked luggage.

Goodness Linda, that's *exactly* what I'm trying to avoid, you poor thing I can only imagine how embarrassed you were - I was at the dollar store this evening buying the ziplocs chanting "quart sized, NOT gallon" just to make sure, lol.

Thanks to everyone else for all of the rest of the tips - ya'll made some good points I hadn't thought about. I think I'll pack my (powder) makeup in the carry on and put the rest (mascara, perfume, shampoos, etc) into the checked bag. I have a fairly small carry on that should fit right under the seat, but that was a great idea about being among the first on if I can help it - I think I'll do that anyway. Since my carry on is so small, I'll need to check my luggage, but thankfully it's a straight flight with no layovers. Another great idea about the meds - I probably would have packed them into the checked luggage since I have sooo many different bottles, but I'll rearrange the packing and keep them in my purse.

Thanks for the well-wishes too :-) I'm going to visit a dear friend that I used to work with - she and her family moved away several years ago but we've kept in touch. We've been each others' cheerleaders along the way, and she knows how badly I've needed a hug. It'll be nice to let them be my Calgon and "take me away from it all" for a weekend :-)

If the makeup is liquid, put it in the quart bag along with the mascara.
If it is powder, you can leave it in your pocket book.
I know this sounds hard, but just to summarize:
All carry on liquids must be in 3oz or smaller containers and must be put together in one quart sized zip loc bag.
this bag must be removed from your luggage to go through the xray machines.
When you get to the security line, remove this bag from your luggage, take off your shoes (most but not all airports), take off any outer jackets or coats and place these items in the tubs provided. (If you are carrying a laptop, it must also be removed for xray.)
Don't get stressed out, it is just a few minutes of your travels. Have fun!

When I fly, I pack all my toiletries and makeup and put it in my checked bag. Never had a problem, though the TSA insists bags must be unlocked so they can inspect. My life is an open book, my clothes and makeup and toiletries are in my suitcase, anyone can look at them. I carry on my glasses, prescription medicines, a good book. Things I can't easily replace. My suitcase did go missing once, I was on my honeymoon. The airline found my suitcase the next day and hand-delivered it to our motel in Atlantic City.
