The mommas and the papas, PMs, 2 pics

I took these photos about 9:30 p.m. yesterday; the light was all wrong.

Still, you can almost see some of the proud Purple Martin mommas and papas. The ones with the lighter chests are females.

The trees are much further away, 200-300 ft. or more, than they appear.

I wish you could see, and hear, the colony when all of the 25-30 birds are on the perches, singing and visiting and telling "my babies are prettier than your babies" stories.

My Cypella coelestis hasn't set buds either, but the foliage is behind the drumstick alliums in that photo. C. herbertii has started blooming, but I've been spending too much time at work to catch anything but the spent,shriveled flowers. Sandi, the blue foliage in the back is Euphoria characias var wulfuenii, which I consider to be one of the backbone plants in there. I've let it seed all through the side garden to try and deter the deer a little. Cameron, Intrigue gets about 7 feet tall for me. The flowers are orange and on the small side for a canna, but I grow it primarily for the foliage and form. It's in a location where it gets backlit in the late afternoon and then it really glows. It would look great with your orange echinaceas -- I pretty much struck out with those.

I am all too familiar with clutter. So acquainted, in fact, that I think most of it has become permanent features to the house. We have so much stuff now, we are having to move & build a bigger house. All of this "clutter" is actually things that we need & use regularly. We are just running out of spaces to put things. My husband & I each have our own hobbies that require a room all to ourselves to store everything. My plants have taken over the only usable guest bedroom, our closest shelves are on the verge of falling off the walls, his computer room can barely contain what he has in there, my art room you have to be an expert rock climber to get around in. I have always been one of those people who has the compulsion to hide things. I have things stuffed away in all cabinets through out the house, on top of the cabinets & refrigerator, stuff is under the beds, in drawers with clothes-if it can fit in a spot, I will squirrel it away. It helps keep my house looking nice & tidy.

Raeanne~This is already one spoiled baby! LOL She is the first grandbaby on both sides. She is only 6 hours from her DM's DPs so they get to see her way more often & of course they have done their share of spoiling. Of course, you wouldn't know that the DGSs weren't my biological ones b/c I spoil them as much or more. There is something about it--I just cannot help myself. We are going to babysit the youngest DGS while his momma is in school. That should be fun. (You should see the packages that we are taking for Valentine's Day for all 3 & then DGS #1's b'day is on Valentine's Day. Close to DeeMarie's! Please remember my DS on the 8th. That is when she has her surgery. They are going through the front of her neck to remove a vertabra & there is a slight chance that she might not make it & a slight chance that she would not be able to speak again. Dee~Sorry that you are under the weather. That is never any fun. I'll try to get back on here tomorrow before the Super Bowl starts--if I have finished with my packing. I have most of it done but am waiting on some clothes to dry. Since we have to go to a laundromat, I don't like to have my clothes dried there & prefer to have them hung up to dry. It gives me such warm fuzzies to be amongst so many wonderful people who loves their furbabies...here's our contribution This is Mama...she was recued in 2001 at a humane adoption...I took her cause I wanted her baby son...couldn't stand the thought of breaking them up...and she ran her son off 3 years later... She's also known as mean ole mama cat cause she's still very afraid and skittish after 8 years! This is the collie clan...Duncan is 9..Abby is 3 and Gabe just turned 8...(yes we had a cupcake party!) DH took this at the soccer fields this week where they get to run wide open!! this is them during a widdle GA snowstorm last winter...they loved it! Duncan Gabe Abby and last but not least...THE Precious Puddy Cat...mostly known as Puddy but also answers to Precious My son's best friend gave her to us 2 years ago when she was just over 6 weeks old and she has absolutely captured my heart...everynight she crawls into my lap for her massage/rubbins...we think she is Berman/Himmy/Persian...but who the heck knows...WE LOVE HER!! here she is being crazy...all she needs is a beer and a cig! I do sooo love seeing all ya'lls animals...It warms my heart...

Wow--what a lovely experience that must be! We used to have loads of barn swallows when we first moved here (35 years ago), but I haven't seen one in ages. Any idea why? The bats are still around, which is good. Thankfully, they've stayed out of the house (knock wood).

I love your photos. I love your birds. I love your postings...but Alisande, bats? Bats! BATS??? As blood sucking rabid vampire bats...with rabies! LOL

Can you tell I'm a little leery of bats? As in...I'm terrified of them.

Yes, I know the benefits of insect control and pollination they do. I know "all bats are rabid" is a myth. I know they have an important place in the life chain. I love vampire stories (at least True Blood and Twilight) but bats still scare the beejeebers out of me.

As Barney Fife of the Andy Griffith Show once said,

"...Bats! That's right, bats! And do you know what they do? They fly into your hair and get tangled up in there and lay their eggs and you go crazy. All right, laugh! It's happened. Do you want a head full of bat eggs? I don't!"

I even know bats are mammals and give live birth. They still scare me.

Our school's janitor caught a Little Brown Bat one Friday; the science teacher put it in a cage, intending to give a "bat talk" the next week. When we came back to school Monday morning, it had given birth and had a tiny little baby bat.

I forced myself to get close enough to the cage to see the baby. (Kitten? Pup?) It was precious, in a terrible way.

It would take a lot of re-programming to get me comfortable around bats.

Can you post a photo? I'll try my best to look at it.
