Depends on how old they are. If they are new releases, then I would try for $10 for a DVD, otherwise probably $1 - $5. CDs - 25 cents - $1.

Nor would I pay $10/DVD, no matter how recent. I can get them new in just a few months from release for less than that. Clearly, they're used, and no longer "new releases".

10-15% of new is a garage sale price.

Thank you all. They are not new, but some have never been opened. I will go $1 or less.

They sell (used and new) at Goodwill for $3.99 for a DVD and CD's are $1.99 and VHS tapes are .99 each.

I sold everything dirt cheap at my last sale. Almost no leftovers. Nothing left is always my goal.

Price them very very low. I see them all the time and I never see anybody buy them. I don't even look at them and wouldn't take them if you gave them to me.

What's your goal? To make money or to get rid of stuff? Then price accordingly.

I do want to get rid of them of course. With that being said I will not "give" them away at a garage sale as when the sale is over items left will go to our Hospice store or Salvation army pick up.

If you simply donate items you can take a deduction for their estimated retail value when you file your income taxes.

I never pay the price on the item at a garage sale either, if they are not willing to dicker I usually leave it. Unless it is one of my friends but then they usually say well if you want it you can have it for less. Same with flea markets etc. It's part of the fun.
So anticipate the dickering when pricing.

No dickering on $1 or .50! Hospice store will sell them if I don't and that is a wonderful way to give to them.

And garage sales are supposed to be where you pick up things cheap and they seem to be up highly priced, can't believe what they are wanting. Guess internet spoils that with all their sites where they sell their stuff.

I love garage sales, but don't buy much any more....I'm a pack rat as it is. I do go now to buy sheets and material for quilting at church, and also to buy baby clothes for layettes. I love that it gives me an excuse to go garage sale-ing.

When I visited a yard sale, a Mom and about a 15 year old young man were in charge, and when I asked the price of a radio (I'm addicted to our national radio: have one in almost every room, and haul one on a long cord out into the garden), the young man said "$2.00".

Making no reply, I don't remember whether I looked at another thing or two, but he piped up with "How about a Dollar?".

So I spread my hands, and said with a joking lilt in my voice that he was doing it wrongly, that he was supposed to wait for me to make a counter-offer.

If I didn't make one ... maybe he'd get the $2.00 ... but if he reduced the price to one dollar ... he wasn't going to get any more (from me, anyway - and if I agreed ... from anyone else, either).

If I offer "$1.50" ... he has a choice: he can accept that, or spend a while to give it some thought, maybe point out some of its good points, how new it is, etc., then suggest "How about split the difference - at $1.75" ...

... and if I agree to that ... he gets an extra quarter.

Which he was in no way of getting anything like that figure, when he took the initiative to drop his price, without hearing my counter-offer.

After his initial offer ... the seller shouldn't speak next unless the buyer appears to be about to walk away from the deal ... and then it may be a good idea to let him do that, if it's early in the day and the seller may feel that there's a good possibility of getting his asking price, later.

So ... one needs to be more or less an auctioneer.

His mother gently suggested something along the line of that being a good idea, didn't he think ... I don't think it was along the line of "I told you so", if I recall correctly.

After some more rather light-hearted conversation, we each went our way.

I think that I bought the radio ... don't remember whether I more or less split the price between his offers (which would have partially blunted my message).
