Knox and Vivienne (Jolie-Pitt)

I know I'm the only person at the KT who reads news items about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (!), but since many of you are baby lovers I thought you might want to know that their twins were born. They were named Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline.

I like the name Vivienne! This is exciting, because I haven't liked a celebrity baby name in a very long time. As for Knox, I think it looks okay in print, when I say it I envision "Nox." Nox isn't so good. Of course, it sort of goes with Pax, another of their sons. Maybe that's what they had in mind.

My dearest friend is named Vivienne, she's French Canadian. And so is her GD.
My friend goes by Viv and her GD as Vivi!

Ha! I knew when I came back here this afternoon someone would have posted this! My friend e-mailed me the news this morning. She's the fan, not me. Don't care for the boy's name at all.

Knox is Brad's grandfathers middle name, which is where they supposedly got the name from.

Vivienne is the French form of Vivian, which reflects her place of birth.

I'm not a fan of either but I wish them the best. I can't believe they have 6 kids under age 7. I would imagine they're not done though.

Knox, Pax and Maddox the sons all have names that end with 'x'.

You're rightÂI never thought of that.

I LOVE the daughter's name, first and middle. I love the name Shiloh too. Vivian was my grandmothers name and would have most likely been my daughters name, if I had had one.

I think the boys name is stupid.

Marcheline is Angelina's late mother's name.

LOL The "Leon" part tickles me. I told Twinkie this morning that all of the kids have different/more exotic sounding names and then they throw "Leon" in. There's not a thing wrong with the name Leon, understand. I just think it sounds like Brad's Missouri upbringing coming out! LOL

(The reason I know is because I was brought up in Arkansas.......LOL)

The girl's name is pretty but I hate Knox Leon..What's up with Leon? I wouldn't name a dog that..I hope they are as beautiful as Shiloh. She has to be the prettiest child I ever saw..Perfect combination of the parents.

"I hate Knox Leon..What's up with Leon? I wouldn't name a dog that.."

    That's a pretty harsh statement.

Knox is Brad's grandfather's middle name, which most likely means it was a surname somewhere up the line (perhaps his great-grandmother's maiden name); and Leon "sounds" like it could be a family name, too.

How would you feel if someone made the same harsh comment about YOUR family's names?

Do you think the boy will be given a hard time? Let's see....Hard Knox....Fort Knox....Knox on the door....

I love Vivian...reminds me of Vivian Leigh.

Not giving them a hard time but some of the names that celebrities come up with are unusual.

I HAVE ugly names in my family. That's precisely why I would not give them to a child. My favorite uncle was LeRoy..Do you think I'd name my kid that? All the authors of the baby name books gave that name a thumbs down : they liked the girl's name.

I have to agree with the poster that said she wouldn't name her dog Leon. Leon is a horrible name and does not even go with Knox. But Vivienne???? Please what are they thinking? The other children have odd names but they are not too bad considering some of the other names celebrities pick. But Knox LEON and Vivienne whatever are awful. Hopefully Knox will not have to use his middle name too much. I am sure they will be beautiful children though just like their sister Shiloh, she is gorgeous as are the other children they adopted.

My Grandmother's name was Mildred. I called her "Millie" instead of Grandma. She really liked that. I also had a cousin named Agnes.

my grandfather was leroy, but called roy...

Oh heck I don't keep up with this kinda stuff but I think they are pretty cool names. Is Knox Leon gonna get made fun of????? Heck no his parents are stars. I bet you see quite a few Knox names soon. How stupid is Paris Hilton? Leon spelled backwards is Noel! LOL I know this because my Nieces alway turn my MIL Noel around at Christmas time, but then we put the real Bananas in with the fake ones too! Have you ever looked at a yearbook in a minority school district? I cant even figure most of those names out! To each his own!

Leon is Angelina's great great grandfathers name. And while I dont like it myself, it obviously has special meaning to them.

Marcheline (Vivienne's middle name) is the french sounding name of her mother who passed away: Marcia Lynne.

They do chose different names for their children, but I'm sure they all have some sort of meaning to them.

I would name a dog Leon...or a squirrel, Vernon, and Shiloh sounds like a name I would name a horse. (In fact, I did name a cat Leon....Raymond George Raymond Leon, but we called him Ray for short.) :))

But, it is nice to name children for people in the family.
That is very popular in my family...everyone did it but me.

All in all...have heard some much worse names for kids.

I can't believe people are putting down the name Leon.
Leon is a GOOD STRONG name. It means Lion.

I personally love the name Leon. One of my three sons middle name is Leon. My dad's middle name is Leon. My grandfather's middle name is Leon. My great-grandfather's first name is Leon.

I take offense to people saying they wouldn't name there Dogs Leon. I love pets. I have a cat and three fish. I had a dog but he unfortunatley passed away from Cancer. When I was pregnant with my daughter I was going to name her Hannah but was turned off by it when a close family friend named her dog Hannah. I still think Hannah is a lovely name.

Burt Reynolds given name is Jerome Leon Bruckheimer.
Jeff Bridges given name is Jeffrey Leon Bridges.
Mike Wallace's given name is Myron Leon Wallace.
Kix Brooks from The Country Duo Brooks and Dunn's Given name is Leon Eric Brooks III.

When someone asks about baby names and I don't really like them I say 'No, I really don't care for that.". What people name there Children is really there business.

Almost every child gets ridiculed for something whether it be his name or how he looks....his speech something.
Adults shouldn't be the ones to ridicule the name...let's leave that to the children.

Good for you, Tnmom. When I read the derisive comment about the name Leon I was hoping no one here had a son, or a father, or a beloved relative or friend, with that name. I think a little caution is a good idea, at least sometimes, when posting on a public message board.

Brad and Angelina - Congratulations! I pray that along with your newest additions to the family, you also are richly blessed with joy, peace and love.

The practice of naming a new baby after an ancestor is something that started hundreds of years ago. It actually is something that helps in genealogy research. :-) The first-born male would be named after his paternal grandfather, for example.

Many times I've seen posts here at the KT where folks make disparaging comments about names given to kids "these days." And probably deservedly so. These are names that are not connected to their family history in any way, shape, or form. They're simply names that the parents invent so that their kid will have a name that no one else has (or would want, for that matter). Some of these names are downright weird, and anyone can tell that it's a brand new name.

But Leon is a name that has been around for a very long time, and so is Knox. While most folks would have Knox as a surname, it is not at all uncommon for a new baby to be given a family name as a middle name. And it's not at all uncommon for a new baby to be given an ancestor's middle name as a first name. If you've done ANY genealogy research at all, you can see how easily Knox could move from a surname to a middle name to a first name.

I, too, have been hoping that no one reading this thread has a beloved ancestor named Knox or Leon.

I don't care for the names. I had a great uncle named Leon, but it wouldn't be my choice. I certainly think they're better than some celebrity baby names I've heard - like Apple or Nicholas Cage's son Kal El.

I could care less what movie stars call their children. People go, goo goo ga ga over their every move. Gee, they are paid tremendous amounts of money to read lines.

Of course if there is a movie I want to see, I will be in line paying the nine fifty to see it. lol
