It's Time to Introduce 'CeCe' ! His Story w/Pics (long)

To tell his story, I have to go back a bit! Some of you may remember we had a cat named Dusty! Dusty was solid gray, except for a tiny white spot on her chest. We'd had Dusty for almost 21yrs.! She wasn't a very sweet or loving cat. She lived here, we fed her and pretty much left her alone. She didn't want to be bothered/petted at all. Needless to say..after 21yrs. she'd pretty much "worn out her welcome"!lol Ronnie & I had decided when Dusty "went over the bridge"....we'd never have another cat! Dusty died last Summer and we became a cat-less household and everyone was pretty content!

CeCe's Story: Ronnie died June 21,2008 and within minutes my house and yard was full of people! Emergency people...friends...family,etc. People were everywhere! At some point I remember collapsing and just sitting down on the sidewalk! People are all around me..trying to fix something that can't be fixed....when up walks this solid gray kitty! He walks through all the people..and straight up to me. Someone asked if he was my cat and I said NO...I don't have a cat! He's not the least bit frightened or intiminated by all the people. I'm not in a frame of mind to give much thought to a stray cat that's shown up. I eventually ended up on the front porch, in a chair, in the corner! The porch is still full of people wandering around..and this cat comes up looking in the screen-door. Jasper, my Shih-Tzu doesn't like cats AT ALL. He barked and the cat just stood there. My friends husband was sitting beside the door, and he opened it and the cat walks in like he's lived here for years..like he's HOME!! He comes over and jumps up in the chair with me, then gets down and wanders over to ANDY! My friends husband said "Brenda..there's your comfort"!? I told him that NO...it was a d@mn cat!" lol I cautioned everyone to NOT feed him (you feed 'em, they never go away). I'm not sure who put him back outside or when..but I know he was stretched out in front of the screen-door the next morning! AND..he was still here the NEXT morning! This cat wasn't about to go anywhere! If he had a home...he'd moved! haha Everyone just just amazed that he wouldn't leave. I knew when I told someone to go get litter and a pan...AND cat food..that WE had a new pet! He made friends with Jasper right off (they are now "best-buds"). Andy named him CeCe (Comfort Cat)! He knows and comes when his name is called! He has the sweetest personality and is so loving. Last Sat. night (3 weeks since I lost Ronnie) I was kind of having a hard time. Everything seemed almost the same as it was THAT Sat. night. I was home alone, my neighbor was gone..Andy was gone..and then around 9:30..I heard sirens! Just kind of weird! I talked with a friend on the phone for a little bit, then got ready to go to bed. I usually crash out on the couch watching TV. That night, when I laid down, CeCe jumped up on the coffee table and just sat there for a minute staring at me. Then, he jumped over on the couch, walked to the pillow and got comfy..right behind my head. He was still there the next morning when I woke up. He'd never done that before..and hasn't done it since. Now his bed of choice is in the floor..BESIDE the couch!

So..now I'd like to introduce you to CeCe!!

You really can't tell in the picture, but Jasper is wearing a John Deere collar that I'd got for him a couple of weeks before Ronnie died! AND..by this time next week, CeCe should be sporting his OWN John Deere collar...thanks to our Liz_GA!! CeCe says THANKS Liz!*S*

Josh, this was an above average income woman, in that she was the widow of a well-known author who wrote many books after the collapse of communism. Make no mistake: Bulgaria has a lot of history, but it's an entirely modern country. Nearly everybody has appliances... well some appliances, anyway. Every washing machine I saw was front-loading and in the kitchen. Nobody has dryers. Everybody has at least one balcony, and they line dry their clothes. This is true of both city and country folk. I didn't see a single dishwasher while I was there. Also, I experienced very little AC, which was uncomfortable only in that we were experiencing record highs (100+ F)... this accounts for us spending so much time in the (cooler!) mountains! Here's a picture of a backyard in the next city we went to. Notice the satellite dish? When we left Irena, she asked if we would copy our pics to CD and send it with Vesko on his next trip by. Concerned about compatible file formats, I asked (through my interpreter) if she wouldn't prefer prints. She laughed and said "No, I have a TV, a DVD player, a computer, and more. Your file formats won't be a problem." One last thing about Kovachevitsa, its designation makes its property very desirable... especially to people from other EU nations looking to snap up bargains. Irena told us property has been selling in this village at the heretofore unheard of rate of 1,000 Euros per square metre ($147 US per square foot?) Sometimes we change things the most when we try to keep things exactly as they were! After Kovachevitsa, we went to Leshten. Lots to see here. There are beautiful gardens attached to restaurants, and some very charming old buildings have been converted to hotels. There are only two official residents of Leshten. It was dark, but Vesko knocked on their gate and asked them to let us in to meet them. They were in the middle of milking their goats (!) but they obliged. She's 76 and he's 81. Five times they begged us to drink rakia with them, but we were reticent to continue our interruption so late at night. They could not have been friendlier or more charming. By this point I was understanding a surprising amount of what was being said. Certain phrases amused me though... One was "Dah Bah Dah" which was interjected quickly in a conversation when the listener agreed with the speaker ("Dah" means yes). To me, it always sounded like "Yabadaba-doo!" and would always make me giggle. Well Vesko had a surprise for us at the very top of this hill. He called it the "Yabadaba-doo house" for obvious reasons. Vesko found the power and we turned on the porch lights and enjoyed a fantastic view. He said he knew the owner and had always wanted to stay here (no one was when we were there). He said the house had satellite and wifi. I wondered why anyone would go to what seemed to me to be the end of the earth to plug in. We walked back to the car (much easier to negotiate those cobblestone hills when one is sober and wearing proper footwear) and drove back to our hotel in Ognoyanovo. We wanted to eat dinner on the patio by the pool, but there were no free tables, so Vesko got the waiters to carry an indoor table outside to accommodate us. Vesko had told us he had a surprise for us and asked us to wear our swimsuits and cover-ups to dinner. After dinner, he strapped a spelunking light to his head, took us off the hotel grounds, walked us across a narrow and precarious suspension bridge (daylight pics don't do it justice), and up the road for about five minutes to a geyser-fed hot spring mineral bath that's been operational since Roman times. The moon was bright and barely waning, the air was clean, cool and fresh, and the water was bath-tub warm. My friend is a very driven woman. She's a serious scientist with lots of business responsibilities... and we learned about then that she's also a hopeless "city girl." The whole way up she was terrified of encountering snakes or bears... and even frogs! After we had soaked for a good long time, we went back to the hotel grounds, sat in a circle, and drank Vesko's pear rakia until the call of sleep finally became louder than the chorus of crickets. Steve took these pics the next morning... they don't do the experience justice. And thus ended our fifth day, and second with Vesko...

Its so nice to see faces with the names, and even nicer to see roses with the faces. Im Renee, 49, a history professor married to Mike, an archaeologist. We live in Simi Valley on a semi-rural half-acre lot in the house grandpa built (I use the term "built" loosely), which we have slowly rebuilt over the last ten years. No kids. We have a twenty-eight-toed orange cat, named Sam; a yellow lab named Sam; two Wyandotte chickens named Quasimodo and Blanche; and a pond full of goldfish of which only a few have been graced with identities. Mike also feeds an assortment of finches, scrub jays, and fence lizards, the last of which now run up to people with sandals on and bite the toes to make the toes cough up mealworms. My mother gave me the gardening bug and shes still my main enabler. I spent my years in college planting seeds in dry, narrow, dark apartment "beds" or balcony pots, shuffling pitchers of water to them from the kitchen sink. Since then, I have remained an astonishingly ignorant and lazy gardener with no foresight or sense of planning. My garden has grown in an entirely haphazard fashion over the years and makes no sense in terms of high-water/low water needs, design principles, shade/sun needs, color combos, irrigation systems I never cared for roses. The roses I knew as a kid were left to their own devices on the edges of unkempt Bermuda lawns, so that the grass would grow up through the rose and the lone juniper or zonal geranium next to it. Ick. Then I started looking at the photos in the Rose Gallery. Yeah. I dug a new bed and planted it with roses; Mike built new arbors for roses, I am talking my both neighbors into planting roses in the middle of a drought. This forum has saved me from making several serious mistakes, and I thank all of you for your suggestions and wisdom. I am also heartened by your stories of how to cope with disability and continue to garden. Hooray for the Rose Forum! Security is an issue for me but I'm much less concerned then most people, and I think at least(knock on wood) for now, I have good reason. First, I avoid putting any plant down by the street that would just KILL me if it was stolen. About the only plant down there that has much emotional attachment is a 2-3 year graft of Picea abies 'Dandylion', a golden-seedling gift from Bob Fincham. That said, I'm sure Bob has a dozen more grafts in the works so it's hardly irreplacable. I try and keep my 'really coveted' plants closer to the house where you'd have to drive up my driveway, park, dig up the plants and then leave before my neighbor called the cops. This leads me to the second point. My neighbor is a retired police officer and he's also a neighborhood bulldog. He constantly walks his dog(3-5 times a day, every day), mows the yard and generally watches things with a California-cautious eye. It's good to have neighbors like this who can monitor things when I'm gone. While he and his wife do take small trips, it's certainly refreshing to know that it wouldn't be easy to dig up a half dozen plants without him noticing. Especially now since there is no parking on the street, you'd really be out of place parking next to this new bed. Finally, we're in a dead-end cul de sac in a VERY quiet, low-crime area of Washington. People frequently leave their garage doors open, etc. without too much worry. I guess ultimately if someone wanted to rob me they could and in this day and age, if someone really wants to rob me for my plants then I guess they need the plants(or money) more then I do. Hopefully it never comes to that. If they asked, I'd just give them a few for free and show them my plants. -Will

I got the glass through a local shop. My situation was different, as only one wall, the "front" door wall, was glass. The other three walls were kerdi and tile. The sloped glass ceiling was captured in the walls on three sides and clear silicon was used to seal the remaining side to the front wall of glass. I'm not sure what type of specific seal was used on the door. It might have been clear vinyl. If you do a search or ask at the glass shops, it might also help if you refer to it as a "raked" (sloped) front wall of glass. Actually, lemme see if I can get a quick google hit... Found one at Wilson Glass. Not exactly what you're looking for though. Using something like that with a sealed transom overhead would work and be the lest expensive. Having the front wall as a single piece of glass with the door cutout of it would be $$$$$.

Wow, what a story! This is the first I heard about your Ronnie, I must have missed the post. I am so sorry for your lost.

Sometimes pets find us, especially when we aren't looking. It has happened to me. I hope CeCe does bring you comfort in the years ahead. BTW, he is a beautiful cat. And I love the way Jasper lies on the floor with both feet out like that. And how cute they are together.

Oh Bump! I am sitting here with tears running down my face! CeCe is such a beautiful angel that was sent to you.

Won't go into a whole bunch of detail, but the day my mom died (I was 12) we had a stray dog come onto the farm...and if there is one thing you DON'T want, is a stray dog on a farm. My dad and brothers shot at her, (towards her...NOT to hurt her, to tell her to git!) she kept coming back. Finally after crying and pleading, dad let her stay. Lady was my protector and my best friend. It was like mom wanted to make sure there would be someone at the house to look after me while dad was in the fields.

Oh my, do I BELIEVE in angels!

With all the prayers that went out for you when Ronnie died, it doesn't surprise me that you were sent a furry angel to help comfort you, Bump. Prayers are answered. And I think that's the reason he adjusted to his name so quickly ... Comfort is his assigned mission!

This is a great story. We have a Scottish Fold cat. When my FIL was sick and moved in with us, BozLee would never leave his side. Ever. When FIL got up to eat, he would get up, eat, use the litter box and be right back by FIL's side. This went on for about a year. My FIL passed away on Christmas morning in 2002. BozLee has never been the same since. He has been in a state of depression since. When we got him, he was DH's cat...always next to him. Cats I believe, can sense when someone needs them. CeCe sensed that in you.

Oh my goodness - what a story indeed! CeCe is special - no doubt about that!

I also want to tell you I'm so sorry about Ronnie's passing. I haven't been on the board as much lately because my company has started blocking a lot of websites (the nerve of them - seriously!!) but I wanted you to know my heart has been heavy for you and I've thought about you often.

God bless you and CeCe. That sweet kitty will bring you a lot of comfort in the days to come.

I'm very pleased to hear another little soulmate found his home. I wish you and CeCe many healthy, happy years ahead.

I've been blessed with more than one cat who 'found' me, and who were sooo loving, smart and not so independent...and did come when called. :)

Then there's my little Stash girl who's caused a hole in my heart about her size. ;-) My little soul mate, bless her..she's 14 now and still doing so well.

All things are meant to be. Our Father provides for our every need, and Brenda your story sure proves that. CeCe is beautiful. I'm so glad he was sent to you for comfort. He looks just like our youngest cat, Spaz and his brother Slater that we had. Treasure your heavenly sent gift.
