Friend at pool this am told us about this and I found the following info in a search. So I'm sharing with you!

The best way of getting rid of mosquitoes is Listerine, the original medicinal type. The Dollar Store-type works, too. I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared. The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby. During the summer, I don't leave home without it.....Pass it on.

I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors. It works - in fact, it killed them instantly. I bought my bottle from Target and it cost me $1.89. It really doesn't take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not as expensive to use as the can of spray you buy that doesn't last 30 minutes. So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside the dog house if you have one.

My fried swears by it and my DIL uses it at their home.

Thank you Fetters. Really good post. Quite timely for us as DH has suggested putting in a garden pond. My first question was, "What about the mosquitoes?" I was intrigued by the mention of Lemon Eucalyptus. E maculata sounded somewhat familiar so I assumed we call it something else down here. I googled it and this is what I found. E maculata is known as Spotted Gum or Honey Gum (good for bees). E citriodora is known as Lemon-Scented Gum. And there is a hybrid E maculata citriodora. Recently these particular gums have been reclassified from Eucalyptus to Corymbia (useful to know in case the nurseries change the labels). I debated whether to mention the next bit. In some areas they are getting a reputation as an invasive weed. It's hard to know when such a reputation is truly warranted. (I have some birch trees, which are most definately not indigenous to my area, and I do get seedlings coming up, but after all these years my birches haven't taken over the nearby bushland. Or is that because they have no chance against the Patterson's Curse, which was once an introduced garden flower.) I suppose all I can say is do some research if you're thinking of planting one. Perhaps conditions in the areas of the US where they are grown are such that they are happy enough to grow okay but not so happy that they get out of control. And the good news is if you change your mind after you've planted one, it apparently makes really good timber. Hello OzOrganic. Sorry to hear about your landlord issue. Yeah that is a good idea if you have the resources. I've seen it done with bigger netting surrounding fruit to keep the birds out. This year I covered some of my pumpkins with netting that had holes no bigger than a millimeter across, far too small for the borers to get in. This thing was in my opinion borer proof, yet on at least three occasions I walked out to find a borer sitting on a leaf UNDER the netting. I was completely stupefied, I knew there was no way they could get in. There were no holes in the netting and they couldn't crawl underneath. So I figured these must have been borers that overwintered in the ground and came up from underneath. If that was true everything would be fine because there was no way they could have mated to produce any offspring. Yet somehow there were offspring and my pumpkins were attacked by the borers. I am done trying to stop them it is too much effort and nothing works short of killing all the insects around. Try it though it is a good idea.

Has anybody tried using Mosquito Dunks to control fungus gnats?

I have never used them myself but I know "Bacillus thuringienis israelensis", the active "ingredient" in Mosquito Dunks will kill fungus gnat larva it is comes in contact with them so I see no reason why it should not control a population in your bin. I would use 1/2 a dunk and soak it in the recommended amount of water and use this treated water to soak some bedding in and mix it into the bin. Fungus gnats like wet conditions so after application I would let the bin dry out on the surface to further discourage any remaining adult gnats to lay eggs back into the bin. I had a gnat problem the first summer I had my bin. I think they started in the worm bin and quickly spread to all houseplants and then started swarming in the kitchen. I applied beneficial nematodes to some coco coir and used it to top dress all plants and dumped the rest into my bin. I have not had any fungus gnat problems since. I would not purchase such an item. I prefer to rely on predators for pest control. I relied on never-fed minnows, backswimmers, water tigers, and dragonflies to prevent my pond from becoming a mosquito breeding oasis.

I dilute cheap mouthwash with half water in a spray bottle and I find it makes a significant difference. There are different varieties of mosquitoes, though, perhaps it works better for some than others?

I use a mixture of 1 part beer, 1 part listerine (or the cheapest brand) and 1 part epsom salts.

About 2 cups of each, put it in one of those sprayers you put on the end of your garden hose and spray the yard & house. Keeps the mosquitoes away until it rains.

I live in Southern California. Don't see skeeters here. :-)

One of the hardest decisions I have to make as a world traveler is to decide if I want to travel to a mosquito heavy location. I appear to most mosquitoes to be some sort of delicacy and they fight over me, I swear! LOL

I HATE mosquitoes!!!

Hope you find that Listerine works.

I just tried it tonite and WOW it works!

Sit on the porch for a time, nightly, and sprayed it around and bug free. Even there was an absence of the camel flies, that are brownish and look like beetles, and the moths that fly around the front porch light. NONE!

I have a friend that does the liquid Joy and water thing and he swears it works for him. They can find me in an instant, yet don't bother DH at all. The ones this year are bigger and blacker and hurt. I got a bite between 2 fingers and that was a new one. I hate when they get on my face. I wanta rip their little legs off. Off!! Now that doesn't work.

Well, I hardly think any product knocks mosquitoes "dead from the sky" (they'd be millionaires if someone figured that one out!), which is what the snopes is disproving, but that doesn't mean the scent of listerine won't deter them.

I will certainly give it a try. I'm thinking I might just try to spray it directly on me next time I'm camping. I refuse to use OFF or DEET containing products because I would prefer a few mosquito bites over putting toxic substances directly on to my skin. If I were to ever travel to a place where I had to worry about malaria, I would consider the poison.

I currently use an all natural lotion that contains citronella and a few other things that works really well, but it bothers my asthma because it's so strong smelling. You also have to apply it quite often. I think it's called Buzz Off.

So I'd be willing to give the Listerine a try.

Glenda...those camel flies are awful...I'm gonna try it cause I'm being eaten alive just stepping outside!

Jodi...my mom always told me told me it's cause I'm so sweet...so just consider yourself sweet!! they don't like sourpusses!! LOL

I don't think you should spray this directly on you.

Before I went outside, I sprayed all around, and when I was sitting I just sprayed around me.

Liz, I sprayed the bricks where those camel flies like to hangout and after I sprayed they never clung to the bricks. Just didn't see any of those critters.

Will see what happens tonite.
