The Kitchen Table

My bags are packed; I'm ready to go....

Early Monday morning the kids and I are going backpacking in Wyoming for a week. We carry everything we need for a week on our backs. We each carry 30 to 35 pounds. But, it feels like 50 when you're hiking at 9 or 10 thousand feet elevation. This means reducing down to the bare essentials. This is the kitchen.

Here's the bathroom.

The sacrifices are worth it though. We get to places where most people never get. Like this.

And see some spectacular sights.

You all keep an eye on Bigbaby while I'm gone.

Ya'll bear with me. I had surgery on my foot today. Thought it would be simple, but it wasn't ! So I'm sitting here with this big wad of bandages on my foot and it hurts soooooooo much. We are loaded up except for a few plants and some clothes. I'll probably spend alot of time with my foot propped up on another chair sending Catie out to swap for me but we'll be there !! Cheryl

Make sure that you have a way to upkeep the power to your camera and other devices. The residential electrical power varies greatly in the places you mentioned. except for the USA, most of those places uses 50 hz, the US is 60hz. You will need a charger that is compatible with the power source of the country you are in, or use disposable batteries. The voltage of most disposable cells in the US is nominally 1.5 volts. However, many newer camera use Lithium-ion batteries that have a much higher voltage. I don't know if there are disposable cells made in these higher voltages. In this case, one alternative is to carry multiple sets of charged up rechargeable cells, and re-charge any time you get the opportunity. It would be a shame to be at a world heritage site with a dead camera. Naturally, when you are on the cruise ship, that power source will be constant, but do check to see what it is. Do not assume it is the same as state-side power. So click the camera all day and recharge when you return to the ship. When you leave the ship for a day, go with several sets of freshly charged batteries. Below is data from a 1967 booklet. Chinese provinces were not listed because travel restrictions were in place at that time. Hong Cong 50 hz, 200/346 V; 2,3,4 wire Vietnam 50 hz; 230/380 V; 2,4 wire 50 hz; 120/208 V; 2,4 wire 50 hz; 127/220 V; 2,4 wire Thailand 50 hz; 220/380 V; 2,3,4 wire Singapore 50 hz; 230/400 V; 2,4 wire USA 60 hz; 120/240 V; 2,3 wire (3rd wire is safety ground)

I wouldn't stop at just moving the stuff, so good for you! I'd want to clean the place before they came so I wouldn't be embarrassed. Someone else who has a cleaning lady said that at first they used to clean before she came, but now they just straighted up much like you do.

I'm sure you are well prepared. Are you taking any technology with you...GPS,cell phone? I'm so envious. At least I got to enjoy this form of recreation vicariously when my sons were in Scouts. One spent a week backpacking in Philmont, NM. Were you a Scout, Ron?

As for foods; breakfast is instant oatmeal, lunch is trail mix and beef jerky, supper is a one pot flavored rice or pasta dish, then we treat ourselves with a cup of hot cocoa in the evening.
No, I was never a scout. Just picked it up on my own.

Many moons ago, my DH was scoutmaster for Boy Scouts and it was a hiking troop. Did many many miles of backpacking. Had the Kelty back pack from REI and used to hike the 50 & 100 mile trails in CA. Mt Whitney, near Palm Springs, etc. Really enjoyed it Carried everything in, and carried everything out. Many memories but now too many health problems but oh those memories are so good. Not many pictures as camera were not the nice light ones as they have now. That was in the early 60's. They even hiked to the bottom of the grand canyon and back. But their trips were one - two weeks. Boys had to pland menus, except one time they planned cocoa krispies, after that, boys planned theirs and adults planned theirs.
Have a great time and remember to carry extra socks. Dry feet are important as is moleskin etc.

Ron- have a great time, take lots of pictures, tell tall tales around the campfire and save some stories for us when you return.

Joan, I take my Canon Powershot S5. It doesn't go in the pack. I carry it in its own case so I have easy, quick access. You never know when you'll come around a bend in the trail and need the camera ASAP.

Ron, usually when someone is going to places I would like to go, I ask if they need someone to carry their luggage. In this case, never mind. LOL Have a great time and stay safe. We used to live in Montana and so very much, loved the mountains. Dottie

Stay safe Ron. That doesn't sound like much food to take. You should take some Tuna in a foil package for protein.

Well, I guess the less food you take the less TP you need. LOL!

What about water or do you just use the "tablets" to sanitize the water?

Ron, I hope you have a safe and fun trip. If you run out of TP, just don't accidently pick up any poison ivy instead.
