I know your addres says long island, but are you anywhere near corn plants?? Corn borer can do this. You can take one of the affected stems, and carefully slice it lengthwise, or, look for an entrance/exit hole along the stem

Yikes! Earlier I had one lily just sort of "out of the blue" flop over close to the base. The stem in that area was brownish, thin and flattened but there was no external bite mark. It was consistent with it "missing its pith" in that spot. I wish I had taken a closer look at it now. It sounds like what you have. I only had it happen to that one lily. If anyone else has any experience with this type of thing I'd be glad to hear it too. -Helen

Hate it when that happens! Whether you will get anything out of it depends on how developed the buds are to this point. If they are half or more as large as they would have gotten, you probably have a good chance that at least the largest ones will open. They will likely be smaller and not as intensely colored as they would have had the stem not been broken. I have a stem of 'Black Beauty' sitting in a glass of water right now with the largest bud about 3/4 of an inch long - it would have been 4" long just before it opened, so I am not very hopeful but am being the optimistic gardener. Either way, neither of us has anything to lose by just seeing what happens! - Steve

mealy bugs..you can squish em with your fingers, ..but be warned they hop. or you can spray them with insecticide..or a home remedy. I just sprayed some spider mites today with soapy water..heard that was supposed to work for all those lil critterrs..we'll see tomorrow if they are back..I dont know if they were jumping off just from being sprayed or dropping dead or what. Anyway..Those clumps you see are eggs. The fan tailed ones are actually kinda pretty if you look at them. I find them dead in my swimming pool by the dozens the last couple days. kinda gross. You need to treat them before it gets too bad..last year they destroyed my clematis cuz I didnt take care of them fast enuf. Good luck.
