I prefer frozen over canned veggies for sure!
and fruits too... except pineapple and peaches.

I like canned black-eyed peas better than frozen.

I like fersh or frozen vegetables. Canned is my last choice. Except beans, because I hate waiting for soaking.

I like both.depending on the taste I want...I can my own green beans because they taste different...not better just different than frozen but I also freeze some too. I love equally canned spinach, frozen and fresh..sometimes it is hard to distinguish the difference in fresh and frozen. When corn is coming in and nice and cheap, I buy it on sale and put it in my freezer..... I love canned beans and peas...but not only do I buy them, but I can them myself too....so to answer the question...depends on the taste I want at the moment.

The only canned food products I buy are soups and tuna fish - for quick meal emergencies.
Went off frozen fruits and vegs almost a year ago. Always buy fresh - I had forgotten how fresh tastes.

Bisphenol A (BPA) leaches out of tin cans and taints food in some canned products. I have been trying to avoid eating food from cans because of this, but I cheat. I, too, like canned black beans and kidney beans better.

I buy almost nothing canned. Occasionally kidney beans, or pineapple or baked beans, but other than that. Don't even buy too many frozen veg. It's no problem to get fresh year round these days, and that's what we prefer.

Fresh when possible. (Is some bug eating all the green beans this year?) The only canned vegetable I buy is tomatoes for stew -- which I don't make in the summer.

I took a nutrition class years ago, and learned that canned food is "dead" food. I don't eat anything from a can, except sometimes tomato sauce and when I can't get fresh, pineapple.

Oh, and in a pinch, I will use canned chicken broth if I don't have home made on hand.

Oh...things you need to cook and bake with, when you don't buy frozen :)

Off the top of my head:
Flour, corn meal
sugars(white/lt and dk browns/powdered)
Baking soda and baking powder
Rices - brown and white
Panko crumbs
Oatmeal
raisins/chocolate chips
oils - safflower/canola/olive oil (extra virgin and virgin)peanut and Sesame
Vanilla, peppermint and other flavoring extracts
dried pastas (Angel hair/penne)
Cocoa
Tapioca pearls
Corn starch
White potatoes/yams/onions/carrots...all in root vegetable bin.

I can't think of any veggie I preferred canned over frozen. I do like some frozen over fresh though. Like baby peas. Sometimes flash frozen food is fresher than something trucked across the country and warehoused.

I'm kind of amused at people who won't eat canned or frozen but proclaim to only eat "fresh" everything. People for many generations ago have canned foods. Most people with gardens can or freeze food. Just because it was done commercially doesn't make it evil. LOL

I do buy canned pineapple,peaches and pears.

I like vacuum packed canned corn but not the kind that is swimming in fluid.

I live in an area that used to be mainly agricultural just a couple of generations ago. We are friends of a family who is name is known world wide for their fruit products. Their orchard products are no longer processed locally. Some of the products are grown elsewhere.

Gilroy is the garlic capital of the world. But most garlic in our stores comes from China. Our area grows strawberries but most of the fruit stands tuck them in from at least 30 and sometime up to a hundred miles away. The fields are paved over here or sitting as vacant lots.

I was talking to a local produce man just yesterday. He grew up here in the local "country" area. He was saying how although much of our produce is grown here it is first shipped away to be picked over by the food "giants". They get the best stuff and the markets get second best. That's why our apples are "better in Chicago" than they are here. We won't even go into what those "Farmer's" markets get. LOL

I use very few canned or frozen for that matter. I use canned tomatoes for cooking and black beans or other types of beans. I do prefer certain brands of canned corn over frozen. I use frozen baby peas. Otherwise I use mostly fresh - carrots, green beans, brussel sprouts, broccoli and whatever fresh fruit is in season. Fresh corn in the summer only.

I mostly use fresh, then my next choice is frozen, but I use canned for some things. Beef, chicken and turkey broth I can myself. I also freeze a lot of carrots and beans myself, as well as beets.

I much prefer canned corn to frozen. Frozen stuff is too often dried out from improper maintenance. I've had a lot of bad frozen vegetables. They're not vacuum sealed and too easy to get the crystallization on it and freezer burn after only a short while. I like most veggies plain, not covered with butter (or margarine) or sauces or the like. I'm more of a purist that way. Some salt and pepper is usually all they'd need. When the "frozen" products sit on the warehouse dock being checked in, then go into a freezer, then the pallet comes onto the floor and sits there while shelves are being stocked, those things have likely thawed and refrozen multiple times Frozen has the advantage of take out what you need, but often it's a premium cost around here anyway. And if I don't use a full can, I refrigerate it and use it within a day or two. Even if I toss it, it's cheaper than buying the smaller can.

I do prefer many types of frozen green beans to canned because canned just seem too soggy and limp. Peas - either way - I'm not much on peas. Carrots I seldom use anything but what is referred to as fresh but people who know better sure wouldn't call them "fresh".

I can't help but laugh at people that talk about lack of nutrition in canned or frozen food. Once picked, you lose nutrition every minute. But amazingly, people have survived all these years eating it!

Say Dotmom... do you put canned or frozen carrots in your Jell-O??? ;)

LOL, friend Cynic....nope, when it comes to my Sunglow salad, I'm a purist. Fresh (at least as fresh as I can get it. No way to know what century those little orange buggers were plucked from the ground) carrots. I used to hand grate them, but now I have a little electric chopper and use them chopped real fine. In my original post, I didn't mention fresh/frozen fruit. I buy frozen blueberries and raspberries, but buy canned pineapple, peaches, pears and appricots. Dottie

I got away from using canned because of salt but now whith my lapband they want me to eat canned, softer.I do like canned better

I don't put much thought into it. :0) I have blueberries in the freezer, everything else is canned. The difference between canned and fresh green beans is like two different veggies...I just treat them that way. :0)

I grew up on canned vegetables, and I haven't had any since I left my house at 18. I still have nightmares about canned spinach, but I eat at least 4 cups a day of the raw stuff!

I sometimes use frozen fruit in my green smoothies, but never canned anything. I'm another who thinks it suffers nutritionally. No frozen veggies unless I know they weren't blanched first. I only eat close to nature (think Garden of Eden)and canning isn't part of that.

But then again, I'm a weird eater and I don't eat any meat, dairy, eggs, wheat, sugar, processed/GMO or anything cooked above 130 degrees!

Dotmom, I'm glad you survived the storms. Was thinking about you and Phyllis especially since I know you both are in an area that was hit quite hard by the storms. I posted an LPATS view of the lightning in Phyllis' thread.

Back to the fruits... I like frozen fruit of most any kind. I'm so tired of buying strawberries and having them moldy when I get them home. At least it seems that quick. Canned pears and applesauce. Actually I mostly buy the fruit cups. Not much more and less waste.

Been hassling with this. Yesterday,I read where they freeze very well in syrup, not as soft when they thaw. But, I'm not into thick syrups.
However, another suggestion was to sprinkle with white sugar, let the sugar dissolve to create some juice, and then freeze. I just finished this with some strawberries I bought today that were very ripe.
The rest of the box I bought today, I used a third method for storage, and that was to make sure berries are dry, then store in refrigerator in a colander(for air).

I'll see how these ideas work over the next few days.

Note on canned vegetables...the reason I dislike them is not nutritional, more like appearance and taste....it's just that I like my green vegetables green - not that dull greyish green in a can.
Don't like the frozen vegs because they look too artificial, like they were dyed bright green...and, to me, they have no taste.

I know what you mean, Cynic about getting the 'fresh' fruits home, and find they are past prime. The way they are prepackaged in the produce section, a person can't pick and choose the ones they want. My Sis works at a Target super store,and the produce guy said to look at the stems in a bag of grapes and if the stem is still green, the grapes will be just ripe, but if the stem is brown, it has been a long time since they wee plucked off the vine. Yesterday, when I shopped, I checked several bags, and had to reach way back to find a bag that the stems were green-ish. The grapes are nice and firm, unlike the last several bags I have bought, and the grapes were getting soft. I absolutely just HATE to get fresh produce home and find it is beyond prime. Yes, I can take it back, but it would be a 8 mile round trip, is it too unreasonable for me to expect the fresh foods I buy will be eatable and satisfactory?

I've never heard that tip Dotmom, thanks to you and Taz for it. I'll try to remember it. Grapes are a pet peeve. I really like grapes, but first, I won't pay $1.99/# for them, to say nothing of paying $4.99/# for "organic"! I've gotten to the point where I try the grapes before buying them. I've had too many times when they were bad. And a lot of the grapes come from Chili so there's a shipping time in there. We don't have any that are locally grown, even California ones take quite a while to get here.

One thing I forgot to mention before is on corn. I really enjoy corn on the cob, but it has to be good and ripe. And I do *not* like the bi-color stuff. There's just no flavor. A thin skin that pops and a little water. Corn itself doesn't have a lot of flavor but the texture and such add to it. Plus you have to buy so much to get a decent price that I don't bother with it anymore. I'll open a can. It's consistent. And I like it. And so much of the fresh corn in the stores now is this bi-color. Call me a bigot, but I would like to segregate the corn! I don't get out too much these days to hit a roadside stand. There used to be stands in the parking lots at the big stores but haven't seen them this year either.

Well, friend Cynic, I hate to burst your grape........er...bubble. I tried looking through bags of grapes when i shopped last time and found a bag where the stems were greener than the rest. NOPE!!! grapes still a little on the soft side and sour. I will not be buying them for a while. Oh, how I love a grape that is so firm and juicy that it pops when biting into it and it is so sweet. It seems that some of our foods comes from such a long ways away, they have to be picked very unripe to get to us before rotting. I just don't have the idea on how to buy good, ripe, but not overripe fruit.

(sigh) Well Dottie dear, at least I know it's not just me!!! I guess it's to the canned fruit!
