Can I plant a re-rooted sunflower in the ground?

I posted this in the Annuals forum, but that forum doesn't seem to get much activity. I'm probably spoiled by the KT. :-)

I found one of my young sunflower plants broken off (probably the work of my cat Annie, who loves plants so much that she rubs against them.....), and I stuck it in water. It's about six or seven inches long. I wasn't expecting much, but it has grown roots at the bottom. The roots are about two inches long now, and the leaves look healthy.

Will I be able to plant it outside at some point? If so, when? I'm remembering what happened when I planted roses I had rooted (the results were not good), and I'm anticipating transplant shock.

Thanks!

Susan
