Awww...we have elms in back, and I just love them.

I remember you talking about that tree a few months ago. I'm sorry it had to be taken down. There's just something sad about the felling of regal old trees.

Aww. I'm sorry. It was an enormous specimen!
We have a very old and grand Oak in our yard that I pray lives at least another 50 years.

It's always so sad to see a big one have to come down. I'm facing the same inevitable with a Tulip Tree and an old huge Maple, both near the house.

Look how hollowed out your Elm was becoming! I bet my Maple is worse than that, yet it still has a huge healthy canopy.

We have a Century Elm that we are trying to keep alive with injections against Dutch Elm disease every three years. It's been so sad to see other huge American Elms along our street get sick and have to be removed. We've lost a couple of smaller, younger elms over the ten years we've lived here -- and some ash and two willows and a maple. (We are the tree guy's dream come true. LOL) Every spring I hold my breath that our elm will continue to leaf out. I want IT to outlast ME.

Elm are such gorgeous trees..but prone to disease. You nowcan replace the American elm with a new hybrid called chinese elm that is not prone to disease.....

This elm was at least 90 years old and had appeared healthy till about 3 years ago when it just seemed to have fewer leaves. Last year mid summer some of the branches lost nearly all their leaves. This year it leafed out sparsley only to loose them all within a few weeks. The size of the tree with it's spreading branches looming over the heavily traveled road was a danger we couldn't ignore. I had hoped to leave about 25 feet of trunk standing for the woodpeckers to enjoy, but was advised against that when the rotting inside the trunk was apparent to the tree man. This rotting was caused in part by the way the tree was left to grow with two (or split) trunks. The cavity was full of water. The last picture shows how the trunk split open when it came down, so it could have been a hazard in high wind. This Elm had managed to escape Dutch Elm Disease completely.

A tree will be planted to replace the it. Probably a Tulip Poplar. We won't live long enough to see it actually "replace" the beautiful Elm.

Oh that's so very sad to lose such a large tree. My folks lost three of their five backyard trees to Dutch Elm disease back in the seventies. We've lost twelve of our Scotch Pines to a fungus that's hit the midwest. It just breaks our hearts to lose them, but there's nothing one can do once the disease gets to the tree. You can't cut off the diseased parts we're told.

The way you tree died is the same as for dutch elm disease. Over the past 20 years, I have lost 2 American Elms in my back yard to dutch elm disease. One was a daughter tree of an old large elm tree that was on the propetry when we moved in. As time passed, it looked healthy and I had hoped that if might be spared. Maybe the box alder tress surrounding it protected it - But no. When the tree got to 14 inch diameter, it was hit with the disease, but before it succumbed, another elm was growing on the property. The same thing hapened to that one too it when it got to about 14 inch diamenter. It has been dead for several years and needs to be taken down before it falls on something.

There are no more elm seedlings on the property.

gazania, Tulip Poplars grow fast; you may live to see a tall tree (probably not as tall as the elm). I have baby Poplars all over the property and in flower beds that I'm constantly pulling out. Right now I have three very nice little trees growing which I put off getting rid of because my friend wants a Tulip Poplar. I'll wait until Fall to dig them. One is growing at the edge of the property near a farmer's field and is at least 3' or maybe 4' tall, didn't notice it until a couple weeks ago. That one HAS to go or be dug up.

Anyway, again I'm sorry about your big tree.

You don't want a Chinese Elm. Dirty trees. If you want another elm, there are now disease-resistant elms.

I so regret NOT planting a Ginko 'because they are so slow-growing'. Well, I'm still here and I have no Ginko at all! A neighbor had the most gorgeous Ginko. In the fall it was GOLDEN. I also loved that it lost ALL of its leaves in one go -- no return raking to be done! LOL

Chisue, I have always loved a Ginko. A gorgeous Ginko grew in a park just about 200 feet on the other side of our fence at a previous home. It was amazing..I would go to bed with that tree full of golden leaves and get up the next morning and all that gold would be on the ground. At 69, I think it is too late for me to plant these slow growers. LOL. I have been watching my Paperbark Maple grow for 11 years now. It was the first thing we planted here, hoping to live to see it as big as the one I fell in love with in a park many, many years ago. It sure is slow.

I know that the Chinese Elm is not what I want. If we come upon any of the new disease resistant Elms we will try it along with the Tulip Poplar on the other side of the front yard. Disease resistant does not mean disease proof.

I am a huge tree lover. It's so sad to lose an old tree. My yard has a lot of old ones and I worry with every storm.

Gazania, our area was affected by the dutch elm disease many years ago too. The local nurseries here are advertising Princeton Elm now as the one to use. It is supposedly very disease resistant. I want to plant one, but I haven't decided where I want to put it yet, so it may be another year before I acually do it.
