How sad for the pigeon clubm. It was very nice of you and your friend to help him out. I hope he's able to live a happy and full life due to your efforts.

That is sweet. I once rescued a pair of tiny baby pigeons. Pigeons are destructive in hay barns and the neighbor farmer would go out and shoot them with a bb gun. He killed the babies' parents and I couldn't bear to think of them starving to death so I brought them home and raised them. One flew away when it was grown but the other stayed around for a couple of years. He used to eat with the chickens in the yard. He used to come flying fast when we'd walk outside and land on our shoulders. He'd ride on the ex's shoulder while he'd mow our 3-4 acre lawn. When we went inside, he'd fly from windowsill to windowsill pecking to be let in. Occasionally, he'd make a mad dash and come into the house with us. I called him Pidge-o. He was a beautiful mottled light tan and in the sun he was irridescent with purple, green, blue etc. glows. One day he started hanging out with a new girlfriend and eventually they took off together.

How very kind of you. A lot of people will feel sympathy, but they won't get involved. I've rescued quite a few pigeons. I was at Lowe's one time and found one that someone had thrown in the trash can...and had asphalt all over him. They were re-topping the roof, and I don't know if it was an accident, or if someone had done it on purpose. Hard to imagine how he would have gotten it coated all over his back.

I took him home and washed him many times in Dawn detergent.
Until he got his strength back, I hand fed him...catfood soaked in milk or water. He was black and white, and I named him Checkers.

Found another one in Houston, on the sidewalk, in the middle of summer, heat exhausted. A young one that had been kicked out of the nest but couldn't find enough food or water. I named this one Hue. It turned out to be a female. She would follow me all over the place. Later she mated with another rescued pigeon named Junior (hit by a car and blinded in one eye) and they had two babies, but just before the babies were big enough to leave the nest, she disappeared. I am sure she was eaten by a hawk or owl, as was Checkers. Junior finished raising the babies. I had started feeding the wild pigeons and later Junior and the babies joined up with them.

A lot of people don't like pigeons, but I found a forum about pigeons, and learned a lot about them. For one thing, they are extremely smart and get very attached to their owners when raised as a pet.

Lucky pigeon that you found him and were willing to help him. Years ago, I rescued a fledgling whose mother had been killed by a car. He couldn't fly yet, so I took him home. He would snuggle on our laps and coo, too cute. I had no idea what to feed him (this was before you could find out such info on the internet) and gave him birdseed, which was a bad idea. I noticed he was losing weight and took him to a wildlife rehab. Just in time too, the lady told us we had not fed him correctly and he would have died due to malnutrition. I called to check up on him every day and thankfully, he made it and was released with other pigeons when he was big enough. Since then, we've rescued many more birds, but have always taken them to a rescue to make sure they received the right care and food.

Marilyn c, wouldn't surprise me if it was deliberate, so many people hate pigeons. I hope people who are mean to animals get exactly what they deserve!

Speaking of pigeons.... a few yrs. back we were vacationing in Boston. We did a lot of walking and stopped to rest at a park. It was loaded with pigeons and blackbirds. We had bread from my DD's sandwich and immediately she started to feed them. We had a bird party! I was shocked to find that over 50% of the flock that was around us had what looked like fishing twine around their feet and toes. Some of them could barely hop/walk and would get beaten by other birds to the bread. I was devastated! It looked painful. I was able to get pretty close to those whose feet were pretty bound. I wanted to cut it off but they would eventually get scared and try to fly off. I didn't want to stress them anymore so I stopped trying. It ruined my day to see this. I could understand a few birds having this problem from maybe being around fishing boats or piers but it's just that there were soooo many. I was stunned and saddened. Sorry to spoil the happy moment. Do hope your pidgy will be fine. Anyone out there from the Boston area seen this before?

For weekend entertainment, I used to drive my kids over to the city. We brought food for the seagulls. Before long, we'd have hundreds of them and some geese flocking around us begging for food. It was fun. Once, there was a one-legged gull. He was more aggressive than the rest and stole more food. I felt sorry for him, but with his aggressive nature, I bet he survived just fine.

Another time, DH and I went on a romantic vacation for our anniversary along the north shore of Lake Superior. Lots of gulls around there. We saw a couple outside our suite and threw some bread crusts to them. Before long, we had hundreds and hundreds of shrieking gulls around us. They weren't afraid at all. Some of the guests from neighboring suites joined us. Have lots of great pictures of them.

Thank you for rescuing that pigeon. That was such a nice thing to do. I hope he's going to be okay.
