My favorite grocery store finally got seeded watermelons in. I have purchased soooo many seedless ones and have been disappointed in the lack of flavor. Grandson begs for watermelon all the time, but I won't buy seedless. The seeded one we cut open tonight for fruit salad was out of this world. I have only gotten one that tasted better. I know this one won't stay in the fridge long. It's not summer unless watermelon (seeded!) is involved!!

I don't know how seedless watermelons are produced, but I am aware of how the horticulturists have managed to breed seedless grapes, and maybe they have done a similar thing for melons, too.

Seedless grapes have been bread to ripen the fruit before the seeds mature. The seeds are still there, but are inmature and tiny. I can envision this sort of thing affecting the taste of melons if their sugar content and flavor were reduced due to premature ripening.

I am not the grape expert by any means, so I'm taking a rough stab, in the hopes that someone with a lot more grape knowledge than I have will correct my mistakes, but ... 1) Most grapes are on their own roots. Some, mostly Vitis vinifera and its hybrids (European wine grapes) are grated on rootstocks that are resistant to specific problems. 2) In Mass, I'd personally suggest trying either the old standards, Concord, Niagra, Delaware, or some of the newer American grapes. California type table grapes won't grow in colder climates, alas. 3) Seedless grapes are like seedless watermelons -- you find the random seed once in a while due, but not very often. Most of the seeds are tiny, soft, and undeveloped.

Murky, I think both your ideas are correct. Soaking softens the tissue area in the node region, and perhaps alerts primordial rooting tissue that it is going to be called on for activity, plus soaking helps keep the whole stick moist. I think that having that fresh-cut end sticking out of water gives off a certain amount of moisture until something inside (vessels) heal up and quit emitting moisture to the atmosphere. Until that happens, the stick can pull in moisture from the can of water. I have a neighbor who stuck 40 sticks in soil and thought he was gonna strike it rich, with these Jupiters. He did not bother soaking them. Only one of them survived! In 1854, David Mirassou's great-great-great grandfather Pierre introduced Pinot Noir to Santa Clara County by planting his prized grape cuttings he'd brought from his native France. It took some creative thinking to survive the journey. When the captain told Pierre he could no longer use up water for his grapes, Pierre negotiated to buy the ship's entire supply of potatoes. By inserting the grape cuttings into the potatoes to keep them moist, he was able to keep the grapes alive, and become the first to import the classic French varietal. I only buy "seedless" watermelon and I still wonder "how" they are produced!

I find the seedless ones to be lacking in flavor. I only buy the seeded ones now.

Good to hear others make this complaint....I was told that it's my imagination that the seedless ones lack flavor, but they truly do.

I haven't bought a good tasting watermelon in years... seeded or seedless. I love watermelon, but have about given up on finding one that tastes like a watermelon should.

The seeded ones probably do taste better, but I hate messing with all those seeds. Also, it grosses me out when people put the plate up to their mouths and spit. I only buy the seedless. Love watermelon!!

Seedless watermelons have been around for years. I've often wondered if we have sacrificed flavor for convenience of no seeds. Seems like I've had so many bland or even bad-tasting melons in recent years.

I have bought the seedless (the do have little bitty white seeds) and have had some pretty good ones - but you are right. Nothing compares to a really good ripe old fashioned watermelon!

I usually try to buy a smaller one and cut it all up. I remove most of the seeds when I cube it up. Then the herd (that is what I have started calling my hungry bunch, lol) can just pop open the container and snack.

I haven't bought a seeded watermelon in years. I've had quite a few good seedless melons, but have also had some that were "ho hum". I find if you can get melons from Georgia they are the BEST whether they have seeds or not!

We cut up a very large seedless melon right after I made the above post. It was so sweet and juicy! It was perfect and I don't even know where it came from...hopefully USA!
