Me too Eileen! Only I was in third grade. My best friend lived across the street and she shared a room with her two sisters. They had a record player in there, and three single beds. We all stood up on those beds and go go danced to the Monkees, just like the kids on "American Bandstand." :) Her mom made a collage with three girls go go dancing (white boots and all!) and 45 records, all glued to the bedroom wall. My friend and her sisters had blond, brown and black hair, just like the girls in the collage. We used to pretend we were them. Me with the dark brown hair always wished I was the blond one! Or we used to play "Charlie Brown, Let Me Down" on the teeter totter. That's when you hold someone to the up side of the teeter totter until they say they will give you something you want. The first thing anyone ever wanted was "Davy Jones!" I've been an anglophile ever since, lol! Looking back at old clips its very evident that he was a true performer, his background in the theater really showed. Too bad he was so short, I'm sure that held him back somewhat in the roles he could get. (In the pre Tom Cruise days, lol!). But it did make him able to become a jockey, which apparently he loved doing too. You know as I got older I used to scratch my head and wonder why I was ever attracted to Davy Jones. My god, I thought, he looks like a girl! :) No "girly boys" for me as I got older. But now, when I'm twice Davy's age in his heyday, that wide-eyed innocent look has gained back its appeal. Sadly, Davy lost it and so have I! Still it's nice to reminisce with those who also "remember when . . . "

My 17 year old son played the drums for over a year, practiced daily and went to loud concerts. Not anymore. He has hair cell damage in one ear. It drives him crazy. He has no hearing loss per say, just a weird buzz, crackle in that ear. He was told that loud noises such as concerts, drums and such can make the tiny hairs in the ear lay down much like grass when you walk on it. If you don't stand or walk on the grass again it will slowly start righting itself and eventually be standing up again. The best way for someone to not "walk on their hair cells" is to stop exposing oneself to loud noises or to wear protective ear plugs. There are all kinds available in drug stores and from ear doctors. There are even special ones that can be custom made for musicians. I took him to an Audiologist who suggested wearing ear plugs every day until the problem corrected itself. After months of no improvement, I took him to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. An MRI of the brain was done on him thinking the problem might be related to a tumor or aneurysm since it was only affecting one ear. Thankfully his brain looks fine. We will now investigate custom ear plugs from an audiologist. I hope this helps your daughters realize the seriousness of loud music, I know my son is pretty bummed by the prospect of having this irritating problem in his ear all the time. By the way, I was a nightclub DJ back in the 70s and 80s. Our legal limit for both records and live bands was 110db. I had a decibel reader and had to keep harping on the lives bands to keep the levels down. They hated me for it and contiued to push the limits all the time. Your only defense it seems is to protect yourself by wearing good ear plugs. Jodi-

I do think the problem is that, at least in my mother's case, she does not think she has a problem. I think most people who can't hear well honestly don't believe there is a problem. And after she saw the audiologist, was convinced she was diagnosing her incorrectly in that she while she thinks she might have a slight problem, it is only in one ear. We went through the same thing with her with cataracts. She thought she could see fine. Then when she finally did decide to have it done, one eye was botched because it hemorrhaged when it was taken out. She then spent two months without a lens - and that eye is still not working correctly. But not believing she had a problem, there was little we could do. I think the saddest thing for my mother is when she is with other people. I took her and my aunt and uncle to visit a cousin this weekend. Because of all of the stimulus, she was virtually left out of conversation - then would blurt something out that had nothing to do with what was being discussed -- but she couldn't hear the discussion. What convinced my mother to finally go and be evaluated was the ability to return if she didn't like them. I am glad she is at least giving a try - don't know what the ultimate outcome will be.

What I don't understand is how not one other person in that control tower or the pilots themselves didn't have the common sense to say "not a good plan guys". March 27, 1977 in the Canary Islands. Something not even related to the kid and the planes he was in communication with? Others in the tower room were chuckling along with dumb daddy and the kid. A kid in the room is already a distraction. A kid on the radio is a huge distraction. Glad to read the union isn't backing the behavior either. Maybe daddy should go to work in a daycare and he and the kiddies can play air traffic controller with a Fisher Price Playset.
