otc? prep "h"...and dh's dr has him on fiber caps 1x a day...the softer the stool, the less strain...and don't do like me and ignore your colon-op! i had them and never knew till i was in trouble...

oh and prep h gel is great on wrinkles, too...

Prep H doesn't help a bit. I got some suppositories from the Dr and they worked immediately! They can also prescribe a cream that helps with the itch.
When in bad pain...sit on a ice pack. It will numb the pain so you can get some rest. It does work.

If you have any problems with any salicylates be careful with preparation H. I broke out in a bad rash.

I suffered for many years with hemorrhoids and cured myself. You may not want to try my cure, and maybe it wouldn't work for you, but it sure did for me. If you check the ingredients in all of those over the counter hemmy products, you will see camphorated oil. I went to the drugstore, got a bottle of that oil, put it on the hemmies and shoved them up in me....OH did I dance....did it burn, but it did the trick. It's been many years and they never came back.

Linda, can you explain "put it on the hemmies and shoved " part? Did you buy the pure oil? I see that oil of camphor is a very common remedy but haven't found any specifics about how EXACTLY to use it.

I'm getting ready to take a coolish sitz bath and dab with a little witch hazel afterwards. Then bed.

you want proctofoam, it's the best, talk to the pharmacist or call your doctor, the suppositories are similar.

I had hemorrhoids after the birth of my second child, I "self-medicated" with a warm sitz bath. I just put a couple inches of warm water in the tub and sat in it daily for three days in a row. When I had my colonoscopy a few years ago, the Dr. found internal hemmys but they caused me no pain. However, after my kidney transplant surgery I was very constipated and they came back with a whallop-bleeding, pain, itching, the works. My doc recommended cleaning my bum hole with witch hazel and using Prep H after. It worked.

rhizo. My hemorrhoids were protruding....sticking out...which is very painful when walking or sitting. I had an appointment with a hemorrhoid specialist but that appointment was months away and none of the over the counter preparations were helping me at all. I think I bought every preparation the drugstores had. Upon reading all the labels of ingredients in each, the common ingredient was camphorated oil. I remember my mom having a bottle of that oil. I believe it was used to dry up cold sores and probably had other uses too. I went to the drugstore and purchased a bottle of camphorated oil, put some on my finger and coated those protruding hemmies, then with my finger I shoved them back up inside of me. Believe me when I say it really, really burned, but it did cure them. I kept the appointment and when that doctor examined me, he could not find a trace of any hemorrhoids at all. He asked, "Are you sure you had them?" Oh yes I "had" them. I didn't have the heart to tell him how I cured them.

I cured mine with an ointment called Panalog that i got from the vet. They hurt me for a long time, but I was in a feed store and someone was talking about a rectal prolapse on a pig and they said to use something with cortisone. I knew Panalot had cortisone in it....and I was desperate. Relief was almost immediate and within two or three days, gone, and it has been years and they never came back.

(I had the Panalog already....and I knew it was a good antibiotic and had cortisone in it....so that is what I decided to try.) I wouldn't have told you this....for fear the wrath of the KT would have come down on me for mentioning something that is a little out of the ordinary....but since others shared what they did....decided to tell you what I did.

yes absolutely the best treatments from the doctors will have some type of cortisone in them as does the proctofoam and the suppositories. You can go to the pharmacy and buy the tubes of cortisone ointment and use that but it is not very strong and takes a much longer time to work very well. The other stuff that is for this will have a stronger dose.

Holey moley, some of you are a whole lot braver than I am! I'm getting ready to call my pharmacist for some advice, too. Thank you all so much for your help. I'll be putting your suggestions to good use.

I had a nice chat with my pharmacist and learned a couple of things I thought worth mentioning to you. One of the active ingredients in Preparation H is phenylephrine...which can raise your blood pressure. There have been incidents of BP spiking. Also, the cortisone ointments can effect diabetes.

These two drugs might not effect most people, but I am super sensitive to chemicals and meds. My pharmacist knew, after a look at my proscriptions and history, that he needed to prevent my using either of those suggestions.

So, it's cold packs, sitz baths, and witch hazel for me. He suggested tylenol for pain.

The common cause of hemorrhoids is from sitting. For example, if you have a job such bus drivers, office workers where you sit for a long period of time, you need to stand up every couple of hours and do some exercise. when pressure is placed on the veins in the rectal or anal area, that is when Hemorrhoids starts to develop.

Constipation and straining to "go" was the reason I had hemmies so much. I wasn't sitting much then, as I was teaching full time.

Marilyn c....that name Panalog rings a bell with me...Panalog Ointment, but I can't remember now if it was something we had for the dogs or cats or what.

I would also buy some Tucks and carry them with me at all times. They are a LOT cheaper in the U.S. than in Canada - obviously I live in Canada. I always have a tub in my purse both for the reason of your post and to use in lieu of tp in many of the public restrooms - and on planes/trains.
