I don't think there's a creepy crawly cuter than a snail. Maybe that's just me though... : D I was cutting back my Lupine and found a snail town! I just didn't have the heart to kill them so the kids and I are driving over to the creek near our house to release them later today. :) Aren't they just precious!!!??? LOL...

Wow!!! They're huge! I've never seen such big snails in person, we have tiny ones here.

Don't forget mr. toadie's living quarters........we take gourds, cut them in half........top to bottom, or side to side. Clean out each half and using snips, cut a door along one edge.....about 2 inches wide and 2 inches high. Let the kids decorate. Suggestions: Hop on Inn....H. Toad Proprietor Hoppie's House Its a Hoppin' Place! Its all fun! The kids can deccorate with paint, sticks and rocks.........whatever! Give it a good coat of polyurethane, (clear varnish) and let it dry. Now, just put it in the flower garden. Suggest the kids use bright colors so it shows up among the flowers and other plants. Or you could Right Click on a picture and select Send To then select Mail Recipient... A little box will open asking if you want make the picture smaller or keep the same size... After you make your selection a new mail will come up with the picture attached... If you want to send more than one picture move all the icons to one area on your Desktop ( or wherever they are ), Right Click just above the first one then drag your cursor over the rest of them ( they all should be highlighted ), then Right Click again and do the same as you would for one picture... Hello, hope you don't mind an outsider commenting. I have been around this forum for years 10 years actually, but I rarely stop by for some reason. This time of the year I come take a peak at others beautiful gardens or perhaps share some pictures of mine. The "cottage garden style" has always drawn me mainly because I love a very natural, relaxing and colorful style of garden. I love a garden that has beautiful flowers especially old classic plants (roses, foxgloves, hollyhocks, ect), mixed with lots of herbs and fruit trees and fruits and vegetables. Throw some chickens and ducks in and now you have your animal who both provide food as well as bug control and hours of enjoyment. I love winding paths with little places to sit and read a book or just sit and enjoy the birds and watch the bees visiting each flower. You can definitely have that style in a warm sunny location (though tropical would perhaps not be "typical" of that style as many of the plants grown in one are not suited for that climate. Though really it's more a style and I'm sure you could make a tropical version (although when I moved here after living in south Florida for 6 years I vowed to never have one tropical plant in my yard, tropical is just not my thing. Here in my zone 8 hot humid southern garden I grow many of the plants we would associate today with the cottage garden style. Although in bright sun like I have in my garden it is best to use brighter more vibrant colors or hot colors as they are supposed to show up better in bright sun. But I don't and I think it looks beautiful even in a mostly full sun southern garden. My go to colors are pinks dark and light, purples (dark and light), blues (mainly from plumbago), apriocot and lots of whites. The only darker or hot colors I have are tons of old fashion black eyes Susan's which really shine in the hottest part of the summer. Some of my favorites I grow include hydrangeas (I do have a small amount of shade thankfully! lol ) ; antique roses; bee balm; mints (lots of different types of herbs); catmint (nepta); irises; daffodils; purple cone flower; four o'clocks; clematis; foxgloves; plum trees, black berries, other shrubs and smaller trees; larkspur; black eyes Susan's; obedient plant; yarrow and different vines. I keep a small raised garden as well as raise chickens and soon to be pair of ducks. But planting what grows where you live and what makes you happy is key, then just repeat those same plants throughout your garden, add spots to sit and enjoy it and perhaps a small water feature a garden statue a bird house or two and there you go a cottage style garden of your very own. LOL, well, we're at 40 now. Bella and Luca are on the prowl, with the dogs at their heels. :) A couple of snails have eggs on their shells and I told the kids that they could eat them. (Snail eggs have become the new caviar) You should have seen their eyeballs pop. ROTFL!

As a kid we would go to the creek, and collect them. Take them home and have snail races.

Sorry to say, can't remember what we ended up doing with them once the races were over.

Do garden slugs grow into snails?
I think I know the answer to that, but it just seemed like a good question.

I agree, your pictures are great! (It's just that creepy subject matter.)

I'm sure this will keep the kids busy for hours, and just think of all the vegetables they will save from those critters.

No, slugs are not the same as snails. That is a wonderful thing you are doing for them and the kids. My DIL would do the same thing.
I would probably keep them, serve them cornmeal and fatten them up and them serve them up with garlic butter and herbs. LOL

LOL you all! They're free as the wind blows now! DH, kids and I went to the creek near a cow pasture and placed them in the greenery- NOT near anyone's house mind you. :) They were actually laying a LOT of eggs in the cage so I placed all the little eggs in a safe area. Who knows if they'll all be there tomorrow... I probably fed the local geese, ROTFL!!!

They really are adorbable, Haley. I had an apple snail in my tank for several years, she was a hoot! She loved to play in the air bubbles!

Snail town indeed. When I was a kid,there was a small drainage ditch at the end of our street. We kids would go there and collect snails in glass jars as "pets". Now when I see them I grab my can of Sluggo and shake-shake-shake.

My boys once, many years ago, had some snails they caught. Unfortunately they placed them in a bowl on the dining room table, guess they didn't know how acrobatic they are. One look from me, seeing snails marching across my table and one scream from me, brought the boys running. No more snails in my house!

I think snails look good in purple, btw. What a funny idea, to cage them up like that. A friend of mine in OH found one on some lettuce and put him in the compost bucket to take outside, called him Senor Escargot. He escaped, this was like Feb, maybe. Thought he was lost forever. Woody renamed him Senor Escargone. JUST LAST MONTH- he showed up, she found him while sweeping and he had slammed his little house shut and was fine! He'd been hiding and staying warm in the cold Ohio winter. Now, tell your kidlets how SCHMART snails are!

Those are so cool! All we ever get in our garden are yucky slugs. Boy, the kids at preschool would have loved those snails! Thanks for sharing your visitors.
