It has been a few years since I have used these types of products, but from what I remember, I don't think they would do an adequate job of removing coarse beard hair.

Yes, Donna is correct. They would not do well on coarse hair. Laser treatment might be your only option.
Try out one of the new 4 bladed razors. That might be a help as well.

It never worked on my legs, because I don't have fine hair. It's such a pain.

They don't work well and can be extremely irritating to your skin. I wish there was something that worked well because I hate shaving too but unless we want to fork out the money for laser treatment, we're stuck with shaving.

Guess the replies above are the reason there's no product marketed for it. You can bet that if one ever comes out, I'll be front 'n center to buy it for DH.

My bone doctor said his friend had his beard removed and it was very expensive. My doctor tried it when he saw what it did for his friend, then he found out it doesn't work on gray hair. He decided not to go through with it because he would still have to shave every day to get rid of the gray.

There's a cheap product that actually works and is readily available at places like WalMart. It is actually marketed to black men and is often in the ethnic section of toiletries. It is called Magic Shave and it comes in a small round can/tube. (Sorta like a short Pringles can) It is a powder and you mix it with water. After the paste dries, you scrape it off with a credit card or similar plastic utensil. Get the one with aloe. Not quite as stinky. It is very gentle. Since it is only a couple of bucks, its certainly worth a try. Hope it helps.

Laser removal is not an option. Way too expensive.
Guess I'll have to put up with shaving.
Might try some better razors. Been using those cheapies.
I woke up from a nap a bit ago and had to rub lotion
lotion on my chest and neck where it was so irritated.

Pooh - DH used the cheap disposables for a long time. We got a free Gillete razor in the mail and he tried that.

He was amazed at what a better closer shave it gave. And he had less cuts.

The cartridges seem WAY expensive - but they last so much longer than a disposable razor. He will not touch a disposable razor now.

My DH would always get very irritated skin and have many bumps and little cuts after shaving. He could be called scarface it was so bad. I taught my DH the technique for shaving with no after irritation and pain. I had an uncle who was a barber. When I was little I would watch him shave customers for hrs on end. Granted he used straight razors but the quality of today's disposables can work as well with the right shaving technique. Yes use a good razor with multiple blades. Start with a hot (not scalding) wet towel on your beard for a few minutes to open up the skin. Instead of a shaving cream try a hair conditioner, just enough to cover the hairs lightly. Let the conditioner soak for a minute so it softens the stubbly hairs. Next step is important using a cold water rinse of the blade after every stroke start shaving. Try to do slow even strokes and overlap as little as possible. It takes a little bit more time than just whacking at the face with a razor and run, but the results are a cleaner shave with MUCH LESS irritation and pain. for 29 years the DH has been following this advice and he isn't scarface at all.

Poohbaer, I was going to recommend Magic Shave also. It gets very good reviews.

One thing about using a depilatory is that you do not have to use it everyday. The product dissolves hair slightly beneath the surface of the skin so it takes a while before it begins to appear above the surface, and is visually apparent. Also the hair grows back feeling softer, since the end of the hair shaft are not cut off like with a razor leaving a "sharp" end.

There are warning for the product though, and just like with any depilatory, there is a risk of burning the skin if you are not diligent about the timing. Keep in mind that this product is made by L'Oreal and marketed solely to Africa American men who naturally have skin that is more oily than their Caucasion counterparts and have a greater concentration of melanin in the skin offering greater protection.

The product is stronger and more concentrated than the depilatories sold to women, and there is a greater chance of inflicting burns to the skin if you are very pale, with soft, thin , non-oily skin. You may want to experiment with hair on another part of your body in a small patch, to see if the product is right for you.

Magic Shave is what a lot of guys use to achieve that hairless look on their heads. They don't run a straight razor over all the head bumps, risking nicks and cuts. The head is curved, The razor is not. Magic Shave is the perfect replacement for head shaving especially since the scalp has a lot of protective oils so there is less risk of burns from the product.

I'd recommend consulting a good laser hair removal -- admittedly can be expensive.. but the results are good for most light-to medium complexions..

Laser hair removal cannot be done on blond or gray hair so it is not for everybody.

Laser removal can't be done on BLONDE? Well CARP!!!!! That means I gotta keep waxing the chinniechinchins. Hmmm now what to do with the money I been sving for the laser treatments? Maybe a fat farm!!!

Coloredthumb, no, laser does not work on blond hair. The laser is attracted to "dark" and will go to the skin rather than the hair. It does not work.

Even with dark hair there can sometimes be a problem if the skin is a lot darker than the hair.

Also as a PP pointed out, if you have some grays mixed in the laser will ignore them and only go towards the dark hair. So I guess if anyone is thinking about having it done do it now before those pesky grays pop up!

I thoroughly looked into having laser hair removal done for my chin hairs. It does not work for everyone.

Poohbear, definitely get better razors. They are pricey but worth it. I use the Mach3, which is a men's razor, but a razor is a razor. It has 3 blades and works very well.
