Ready for the Wedding

Tonight is the rehearsal dinner for my son and his bride-to-be (wedding tomorrow). His bride asked if I would make the groom's cake to be served at the rehearsal dinner instead of the wedding. She asked that it be baseball themed.

I spent nearly all day yesterday peparing it, and still there will be some last minutes touch-ups before the dinner, which is 2 and a half hours from our house. I hope everything gets there in one piece. I made a 22 inch long bat using my son's childhood favorite cake recipe (poppy seed torte). I have the most adorable toppers to put on the bat - the groom pitching to the bride.

I also made a German Chocolate cake in the shape of a baseball and frosted it accordingly.

My son proposed to Briana at Cloudgate Park in Chicago, near the "bean", so my daughter made a batch of Rice Krispies treats and formed the whole shebang into a huge bean. I found edible silver paint at Michael's and we spray-painted it.

All three cakes will sit on one cake board with the bat running diagonally and the bean and ball on opposite corners. I am by no means a professional cake decorator and see many flaws in my work, but I know that the cakes will taste great. And Briana knows I'm strictly amateur. The request was more for a surprise for Aaron.

I have a beautiful pant-suit for the wedding, thanks to a most generous KT member. I spent most of the morning putting the finishing touches on the alterations needed and ironing everybody's outfits.

I was on my feet in the kitchen yesterday for about 12 hours and my feet and back know it. I plan on playing Scrabble on my Kindle on the 2+ hour drive to the rehearsal dinner to unwind.

Tomorrow we have to leave at 8:30 a.m. for the wedding, which is at 11:00. I know I'll be wore out from all this hubbub, but of course it will all be worth it. Aaron always knew he wanted a wife and family, but he took a long time deciding on his partner (he'll be 36 in August), so you know she must be very special.

I had to go down to Saigon for 3/4 days and because it was right before Tet and theft of everything goes up here, I moved it into the house for safety. I had someone to care for the trees, the house was left partially open and the weather was to be cooler with rain or storms... The person closed the house up tight, the weather flipped to blistering hot and I was stuck in Sg for almost a week. Most of the tree has come back but looks like it lost the lower 3 branches...sooooo...there will be some major restyling in the future. Bob

We love our Miele paneled DW. It is super quiet, and I love the cutlery tray and interior organization. Truly integrated into cabinetry with concelaed mechanics when door is closed. I love my Wolf DF range, and I believe the sealed burner rangetop is similar to mine. It has plenty of BTU's for what we do, and I am an avid cook/baker. I use the small burner alot (about 325 BTU)and it is a very nice feature with a pot on all day. Like you, I purchased my appliances a la carte so I could focus on the best of each, rather than a common brand. Almost 7 years later, and they are all working great! Good luck.

Nanny you might want to look into the pants that are made of wind resistant fabric as they are very light. Also the wool and silk underwear at Sierra is weightless and very warm. You wouldn't need jeans as they aren't warm anyway since they are cotton. I found that the convertible pants are essentially wind resistant fabric and therefore are very warm while taking up no room and drying in minutes. When it got really cold I put on a pair of tights under them and they were exceptionally comfortable..and I am a person that is ALWAYS cold. Heavy tops take up a lot of room and instead if you layer several light tops you get way more warmth and less weight plus more options. Just a thought to help you with your plans. My son and daughter-in-law are huge SF Giants fans, so they had the same cake topper. They also incorporated the SF Giants into their vows...In sickness and in Health, for better, for worse, if the Giants win or lose.

My other son got married two weeks ago and I am still exhausted from everything.

Congrats and looking forward to hearing how it all went!

It sounds so exciting, Donna. But with all the cake baking and getting everyone ready, you must be exhausted too. I hope the drive proves to be a relaxing tonic for you. Just sit back and enjoy your son's wedding.

By the way, we did the same thing with the groom's cake for our son-in-law--made it the dessert for the rehearsal dinner. It had its own spotlight that way and was the center of attention instead of getting lost in the reception gala.

You are one swell Mom and will be a great MIL too. Call a halt to all this work now and rest up. You don't want to be falling asleep in church (when you should be mopping up tears of happiness).
