Unused shampoo and lotion bottles

I have a number of unused shampoo bottles, lotions, bath oils, and other things that were given to me as gifts in the past (as part of a larger spa kit), or that I bought and never used. I'd hate to just throw them away. Is this something a nursing home would take? How would you give these items away?

I don't know about nursing homes but I bet the local homeless shelter would love to have them!

Homeless shelters love this kind of stuff.

Check with the Salvation Army, Soup kitchen or other organization in your area.

Ded, my hair sounds like yours. Lots of it but very fine and I don't even have the slightest bend to it -- it's stick straight. I have found that the key is a good haircut, although obviously the right products also help. I feel like I've tried them all. I used to LOVE Bumble & Bumble Gentle Shampoo several years ago when I got it from the salon. It made my hair seem more bouncy, somehow. Then I stopped using it for a few years, rediscovered it and bought it again -- but it didn't seem to work the same magic. It seems that no matter what I do, my color treated hair (which is colored the same as my natural color, brown with a hint of red) gets lighter, almost brassy looking, within a few weeks after coloring.

The only thing I've ever taken was a tiny bottle of shampoo since I'd used part of it. It wouldn't occur to me to help myself to anything else. Since it's not a food item I figure the maids would just leave the unused soaps and lotions there for the next guest. I even remake the beds before we leave, not to look unused but to look like we took care of their property. I always get mad when I see hotel towels on the beach. Several times I've seen them just abandoned. How do motels and hotels stay in business with all the theft and damages done by rude guests? Do they charge things to the guest's credit card?

Ruthieg...I can't answer for Michelle...but I can tell you that I, personally, wasted large sums of money trying every lotion/cream/salve that was recommended by a pharmacist and/or dermatologist. The insidious thing about eczema and psoriasis is that not everything works for everybody and recommendations from real live sufferers are my best sources for tried and true products so I return the informational kindness forward when I'm able. This is a wonderfully helpful forum for those in need of actual experience info and I, for one, hope it continues to be for those in need. Anne

I have been working with a carpenter to get my house in shape and he told me his mother sold her house a few years ago. She had him retiling, refinishing floors, refacing cabinets - drove him crazy! The house sold in a month for $540,000. Her neighbor put her house on later that year. Her house was disgusting (his words). Never did a thing to it. Sold in a week for the same amount. He keeps telling me 'just put the dam thing on the market...stop fixing things!' I'm thinking that this is a tough time to sell. There are over 100 houses on the market in my area. Many are newer construction (last 5 years). Huge homes, everything looks new. Then there are the older houses which haven't done much updating. The larger houses are all priced over 1M and are sitting. I have been watching and the houses which are selling are the mid-range houses 5-800,000. Majority are in the 6's. I think staging will help. It seems to me that many of the houses appear staged. They look very cleaned up, neat and sort of generic. All the wood floors are shining and the bathrooms look updated. I know our Family intervention organization loves to get that sort of thing.....some of these women, and children, have had to leave home in a rush, and cannot think to bring toiletries.

Advertise them on Craigslist.org - some non-profit group would take them, such as a shelter for abused women or a homeless shelter.

All our nearby nursing homes take products like that. They have "beauty days" for the residents and love receiving all kinds of shampoos, lotions, nail polishes, etc. I save all my sample sizes for them.

Check with your Women's shelter. It is listed in the phone book and they usually will meet you away from the shelter. Also, one of the churches here along with the YMCA took a large commercial building and converted it into smaller bedrooms to hold women and children who need a place to stay for a few days, but it is not a shelter. They also help these women equip an apartment and help them shop etc.

Local food shelves like to get this too. There's lots of great places to donate them.

Our local food pantry takes them to distribute to needy families. I usually pick up some when they're on sale to give away.
