Just wanted to say hi, and let you know of my sad news

My husband of 26 years passed away suddenly on June 5th, at home. DD and I had been out and came home to find him. :-( It was determined that he had arrythmia which is apparently different from a heart attack, whereas there was no warning, and his heart just stopped beating so it was instant. We are grateful that he had no pain. But we are still so shocked. It feels like we are watching a movie and looking in on someone else's lives.

Our lives have been a flurry of activity with family, friends, neighbours, paperwork and more paperwork and countless phone calls. With the blasted mail strike here in Canada, we have being doing a lot of running around to deliver documents and to pick up more paperwork. DD and I are going away to my brother's cottage for a few days over the Canada Day long weekend and we are looking forward to just hidding out and maybe do some fishing, I will, but DD, not so much. :-)

If you could say a little prayer (if you are the praying type) or send some positive energy our way while we come to terms with this great loss, I'd be forever grateful.

Hey Joe...quite a selection..Very nice plants before the holidays...:) Is your Holly true Holly or common name? Leaves resemble Holly, but thought Holly had white blooms??? Very nice haul. I passed a Good Will twice in two weeks..must have recently opened. Considered going inside, but was in a hurry so didn't get to check their products. Do they sell large pots? 10" plus... Ohio..hmm, there are a few Ebay sellers in Ohio, but can't think of any nurseries.. There is one nursery, World Plants, but can't recall if they're located in OH....www.worldplants.com I'm certain some of my plants came from Ohio, but can't think of any particular place at the moment. Can't even recall which city. Are you saying, you will not order plants via mail before the holidays, but will buy locally? Turkey Days? What about Christmas and New Year's Day? lol Very few nurseries ship after October, and those who do want to get rid of 2012's etc, stock. Remainders are usually discounted. Joe, did you know, once you joined GW, you become one of us? Pods who grow pods..lol, j/k...Happy Halloween. Actually, most plants prefer cool temps to hot, but that depends on how cold. If you start seeing ice on the walls, it's too cold..Then YOU better find a warmer place..lol. Joe, you were very heroic rescuing the little bird..Thank goodness. The neighbors across the street, husband and wife, rang my bell, asking ME to shoo a bird off their front porch..A Blue Jay. I was totally embarrassed for them. Two adult people asking a neighbor to shoo away a little bird! Good, ol' college days...lol.. About plastic..although our windows are semi-new, they leak air. During winter, when temps are -2, a slight draft seeps in..plants on the sills are cold..The cold is a horror to succulents. So, this year, I placed clear plastic on the sills. It might not be 100% effective, but I had to try something. Place a hand near the sill, it's very breezy. They say it's because the house is settling, which may or may not be the exact truth. IMO, the safest windows are the old-fashioned types..With a screen/storm window. Is that the name? lol..Haven't thought about the name in a long time. Two windows opposed to thin, 'gas' panes. New windows are a lot less work, I'll give them that..no painting, and easy to open and close, but new windows are nowhere as protective as the old types. Just my opinion. That's the reason plastic now goes on each window. Nope, can't afford a larger gh..lol.. Believe me, my dream is to design my own house w/attached solarium. Unless I win the lottery................. Next year, if all goes well, I 'might' sell some plants on Ebay..Agaves, 'pups will stay,' 2 Pachypodiums and a huge Pandanus. The Pandanus/Screw Pine has outgrown space. I detest this house w/small rooms...even if I didn't have plants, the rooms are tiny. Thank goodess there's a third bedroom, which is now a plant room..lol. I love Geraniums...what type did you get? I'm not sure, but don't think this is permitted. We don't normally sell cuttings, we swap them (that's what's preferred) or sometimes exchange plants for the cost of their postage, but selling plants outright, is, I believe, not permitted. For that, you really need to go to a nursery or your local plant shops or box stores.

If you can feel the fissure, then they can inject some resin in it for your peace of mind. That's not a big deal to do. Usually. The resin joins the stone together in a bond that's stronger than the stone. But that's a lot of fissures. I would have my concerns as well. I wouldn't have thought an experienced fabricator would have approved the slabs here, so maybe the experience level isn't as high with these guys as you would think. And, as you've already observed, you chose the stone with issues, and you held on to it even after being offered an alternative. With the discounts, you are getting very close to them not making any profit on the job, and that's also close to the line of exasperation for them as no one likes losing money, especially on something that may have even more issues in the future and continue to lose money. They've given you decent customer service so far, even if they did fabricate something that a more experienced fabricator would have rejected, and if they respond positively to your request to address the additional fissure, then that's got to be the last of the issues you bring to their attention. But it might not be the end of the issues with the stone. If something happens down the line, then you need to start over by buying new stone and new fabrication. Frankly, a fissure or two isn't a big deal, but those several fissures so close together and parallel to each other are concerning. I would have the stone removed from my house if it had any overhang. If there's no overhang, I'd leave it be and just watch it while I saved for something else. Or put in some wood.

So sorry for your loss. I understand what you are going through. I lost my husband almost 3yrs ago suddenly. He went in the hospital on a Tuesday and was gone on Thursday. We thought he had a urinary track infection, but it turned out his kidneys and liver were shutting down. Email me if you want to talk.

What a terrible shock you're going through. Best thoughts and wishes your way. Taking a couple days is a great idea. I know you'll still have him on your minds of course but a little different scenery can be a good thing to help organize your thoughts. The paperwork will wait.

BTW, do you have access to a fax machine or could you use email for the paperwork?

My condolences to you and your family.

If you can, do take a few days off and go to that fishing cabin. Stay a week. As hard as it might be, try to get some quality sleep and rest. That is important for your well being. You've probably have the important paperwork under control; the remainder can wait. Chip away at the samll stuff and take your time, plenty of time, for making the big decisions.

Wow, I am deeply touched by your kind words of support. I am more of a lurker than a poster but have come to know that you are all one very special group of people.

I also know that so many of you have been through similar heart breaks, and my heart goes out to all of you. Life can be so tough at times, but we do manage to pull through with a "little help from our friends". :-)

OJ: We do have an amazing support group, it actually blows me away on how much we are being cared for. Thanks for your concern.

Had more to say but the phone keeps ringing and I've lost my train of thought.

Will be back later to fill in the blanks. Today is a better day, thanks to all you KT'ers. You truly ROCK!
