Acapulco - Sea Turtle Release Program

While in Acapulco we visited a place that incubates, rears and releases green sea turtles, I think that's what they're called. Below are photos from the place.

If anyone can translate the banner, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I took lots of photos that day but very few came out. As was the case the entire trip. Something was wrong with my poor old camera ... sigh.

Hey Wanda. You mentioned on another thread that you have an unbelievable rollie pollie invasion this year. You do know that they are not insects but Isopods, a group of crustaceans. Aka: Lawn Shrimp. Perhaps you can boil em up with some spices? They have very few predators because they have a "distasteful secretion", lol. Anyway, if you're not gonna collect em and boil em, you need a bunch of these. Press on link. The "Sow Bug Killer Spider". Warning: Now I know the original bug link early in this thread had some "enthusiastic" bug People but this link has off-the-chart spider enthusiasts. (You've been warned.) P.S. As I age, my hobbies change. Some on here will remember how Cactus & Succulent crazy I was for years... pretty much gone. I moved in 2004 and my microclimate changed drastically. So I had to change what I grew. Orchids became more prevelant, which devolved into mostly Oncidiums and Cymbidium orchids! The microclimate involved many more epiphytics, AND there was a YARD involved so more in ground gardening and less container gardening. In 2007 my career changed paths (totally UNEXPECTED paths) and I've been learning a whole new industry since then. May of this year saw me promoted into a Manager position, in a one person office, so it is All Me. (That sucks up way more of my time than I like.) Read (less than I used to) Compost Have four cats Have had my Class M California license for more than 25 years and have been more actively riding my trike (Brothers of the Third Wheel have been featured in several Major publications this year) Got sucked into Farm games on a well known social network Photograph my beautiful plants, at a near professional level Lost a dear pet suddenly and needed a new hobby to keep my hands busy, and my lap full... so I started designing and crafting jewelry. Annie sent me a super package. Thanks a a whole big bunch. Apple pie spice, perfect as Apple is Jack's favorite pie ( I like ANY kind of pie) Jolly Rancher candies with green apple flovor Honey Apple butter. Heavenly.Never saw this before but I;ll watch for it now. Trident Gum, also green Apple Annie also sent a fun and useful assortment of "left overs" A dibbler, which I plan to use today to transplant kale. Nice plastic, "T" labels A cube note pad, we use lots of these. as I suffer from CRS syndrome. LOL Jiffy pot pellets, use these too. seed envelopes, and a wonderful assortment of seeds. pea, sugar daddy Rainbow Chard curly cress Red Orach ( never tried this before) red Perilla Anaheim Peppers Garlic Chives, been wanting to get this too. and, a lettuce called azure dandelion. Can't wait to see this one grow. fenugreek and two of my favotite flowers, Calendula and Chianti sunflower. Annie these seeds are very welcome as this spring I took all my seed stash to my daughter's to help her start a first garden. When I came home I left the unplanted ones there for her to do as a fall garden and for winter sowing. Annie I thank you . This was a super swap. Love the theme and the goodies you sent. Beth

Love the cuckoos too. Most of the locals here call them rain crows since the myth has it that they call before a storm. They do have an odd call. CCox, you think it's a sad one? I don't know, it always reminds me of sitting in a fishing boat with my dad years and years ago. A cuckoo would do its cuk cuk cuk ca ca kow kow kow thing and dad would say, There's a rain crow, gonna be good fishing today. Never seemed to really have a bearing on the good or bad of the trip but the call still reminds me of those days on the water with him. I discovered a nest on a rather low branch of a tree here years ago. For days all I would see was a bird butt sticking out one side, and from where I was standing it looked almost like a dove's tail but not quite. Then one day I saw the cuckoo fly to the nest. I'd never seen one before and was delighted but unfortunately I never did see a brood. We had a series of strong storms and had to bring in one of our tractors to clean up the snapped off trees. The stack with all its hot fumes and roaring deisel engine were still not enough to make that bird leave the nest and after the cleanup was done a tail could still be seen jutting out of the flimsy nest. Too bad the chicks never appeared. I always assumed a snake was responsible.

Well Jodi, I only have one thing to say. The pictures that did come are are wonderful. I've enjoyed seeing all that you have posted. Maybe that was more than one thing.

Thanks for the translation Nicole. I knew it must say something important, there were pictures of turtle from Finding Nemo. :-)

Glad people are enjoying my photos. I'm in the process of buying my next camera as I type.

Which Canon camera am I gonna buy? ... the Panasonic Lumix FZ100. :-)

Do not want a DSLR at this point in my life but did want a camera with a hot shoe so I can start experimenting with off-camera lighting. A bridge super zoom fits my lifestyle right now. Later in life when I'm retired (assuming I survive the daily grind) I will be looking to dive deeper into photography with some serious equipment.

I've done my research by pouring over a number of sites (dpReview, StevesDigiCams, SnapSort, to name 3) and the FZ100 comes closest to my wish list within my budget (we have 3 remodel jobs going on at home). I really wanted a bridge camera with a larger sensor but certainly none in my price range with the ZoomX I'm looking for.

I had a chance to play with a FZ100 that belonged to an acquaintance on the cruise and talked to him at length about it. He has sent me to some great sites too, to read about it.

Even though I know it's not a Canon, I'm comfortable with my decision. And hopefully, I'll be happy. :-)

I should mention that there was an excursion we could have purchased on the ship that only went to the sea turtle release center, where you name and release a turtle yourself. It was something like $50 for that tour. I told DH that I liked turtles and all but that was a bit pricey for what they had to offer. So we bought the "Tropical Aviary and Botanical Garden" tour for about the same price. Below is a photo of me waiting for the tour group to gather and leave. The guy holding the sign was our guide. Even though he looks a little serious, he was amazing...and very funny!

So, we go on the Tropical Aviary part of the tour (the lagoon and river/canal pics I showed earlier) and the botanical garden portion (also posted pics) several miles away and then, just on a whim (probably an economically driven whim) we drop by the turtle release center (which was not on our itinerary) and given that tour. If you wanted to release a baby turtle into the sea, it cost $5 ... not $50! Three for the price of two, I like that kind of deal. We did get back later than planned but still have plenty of time to "enjoy" Acapulco which consisted of us shopping for makeup and good hair conditioner (which I forgot to pack). I swear, it's always something.
