spray-on sunscreen

One of my coworkers (well, actually, I'm her boss, but I'm not very bossy) went to the beach, and used her sister's spray-on sunscreen. She came in to work yesterday, the day after her day in the sun (she had Mon. off).

She has a horrible, horrible sunburn, in stripes!

She put regular lotion on her face--her face, neck & chest are fine.

So are the stripes where the spray-on lotion apparently covered.

But in all these other weirdly shaped blotches, she is beet red.

I told her, she's proof that sunscreen actually works. When you get it on your skin, anyway.

She's shivering, queasy. She called her doctor, and the insurance company nurse-on-call (love that service!).

I sent her home. I *wanted* her to take a cab, but she went on the subway.

She's much better today, but she's still striped.

So, if you use spray-on sunscreen, be sure to spread it well.

In fact, I'm thinking I'll just stop using the stuff.

I use sunscreen in lotion form. Get the highest SPF, and rub it in all over, including the part in my hair. I've always wondered about the spray-ons. Now I know.

I've never had an experience like that with me or my 3 kids. I love the sprays-especially when reapplying. I will keep this in mind this summer though.

I told my son to stand with his arms out while I sprayed him with one of those new "continuous spray" sunscreens. Alcohol based. Unfortunately he was standing on my newly refinished hardwood floor and I now have two footprints surrounded by fogged polyurethane. This is oil-based polyurethane, applied perhaps a month ago. It didn't occur to me that it would be a problem and so I didn't wipe it up right away. It wasn't until the next day that I saw the footprints and realized what had happened. Are there any solutions other than calling the flooring company back or buying a throw rug? For what its worth, I have a supply of the polyurethane they used.

OldFixer one of the few sunscreens that is ok for the ocean or wildlife is made by PanamaJack it is used by Discovery Cove actually the only one allowed there. I myself like that sunscreen only for it's environmental values, I bought a tube for the beach but it is $10 for 3 oz and you should be applying atleast 2 oz at the beach every few hrs. It does not last long going in & out of water. This yr several new aerosols came out that say they don't need to be rubbed in. I have atleast 2 of them, Coppertone (white can) & BananaBoat spf 30. we are in Orlando and go to the beaches atleast 2 out of 4 weekends a month. I have an extensive collection of sunscreens everything from aerosols, cremes and oils (old school). I usually use Hawaiian Tropic creme first because it has the lowest spf I can find. yea I'm addicted to having some tan. then by late am (we get there by 8:30am) I switch to aerosols because they are easier so I'm more likely to reapply them alot which I do every 2-3 hours. aerosols, especially the new coppertone ones, don't make sand stick to you like cremes too. we use the usual hats, long sleeve tees in the afternoon and sportbrella for better protection too. ~ liz

Olychick. You would think carrying the inhalers wouldn't be too strenuous a task I have a meeting at the school next week about Chips rescue inhaler. Good.....gives me time to have the doctors draft letters which I must have. When I'm done Chip will have access to his rescue within a arms length away...his pocket hopefully. Sunscreen was Coppertone Baby Aerosol. AND the teacher was not allowed to put sunscreen on any child. There were 5 kids in this group as they are split up in smaller groups. 3 children were treated for itchy rash the following day with Chip being one of them. At first when the school told me this I thought than surely it was caused from something else but none of the children from the other groups got a rash as far as the school knows. I spoke with the ped doctor today. He returned my call within a hour. We spoke about doing a test with the sunscreen...he said i can't tell you to do it but if it was my kid I would want to know if the sunscreen caused it and I'd put a small pea sized amount between the shoulder blades where the child won't scratch it open. He said if I decide to do this wait until school is over and do it on a Monday so he will be in the office. So the teacher wasn't even permitted to put sunscreen on the kids. But I know the teacher was only trying to be helpful . Bet she won't do it again. So what do you all think considering 3 out of 5 kids got a rash?

The kids prefer the spray on stuff but I bought the lotion type for our camping trip. I ended up with burned marks where my tank top was and the sunscreen wasn't and on the tops of my feet, have flip flop marks.

I use both. Lotion for my body. Spray for my back in case I missed any with the lotion and for my face and hair part. I don't like putting lotion on my hair part because it is hard to go on correctly and makes hair look greasy.

We have not had any luck using the spray on except for the hair part. They have coloured stuff for kids where the colour fades afterwards so you can see where you spray, but it has to be rubbed in and I find the protection to be not as good as lotion. If I have to rub it in I might as well go with the lotion and not smell like grape kool-aid all day.

As for the aerosol type that is relatively new? I found it was impossible to get even coverage without using almost the entire can, and that stuff is PRICEY.

Years ago at Daytona beach, there was a guy who walked around and offered spray sunscreen or tanning solution for a couple of bucks. Now THAT stuff worked wonders. Maybe it was because somebody else applied it to the hard to reach spots on the back though.

When I first saw the subject I thought you meant the spray tanning that they do now. I was going to post that I try to avoid activities where a stranger asks me to lift my breasts as I stand naked in a booth ;).

It's true, be sure to "blend" the spray on in..that mist doesn't always make it to the parts you think it does..
We do a combo here too..
It's easy to catch the boys and spray them down..although we have to be very careful of brands on my middle one..he can't wear Coppertone or Banana Boat now..he gets hives!
So we've tried Bull Frog (no hives yet) and for liquid I use Ocean Potion, hypo allergenic baby formula on his face and ears. SPF 70.(he's also the palest of the 3.) Since they are brown skinned they don't "look" sunburned, until a few days later, and then they have "cracked"/stretch mark looking things on their cheeks, ears and necks.

We've used the spray sunscreen for 2 summers now and no one ever got stripes or burned. If we're going to the pool/beach (or outside for a long time) we do the SPF 50 lotion first on DD, then use the spray for touch ups. The spray is great for wiggly kids. But yes, it is pricey-I stock up when there is a 2 for 1 deal!

I used the spray a few weeks ago at an air show. We usually spray & then rub to make sure it's evenly applied. Somehow both DH & I missed a large area on one of my arms. I had a sunburned, blotchy streak running from the back of my arm down to the elbow. Now we're really careful about making sure it get spread around!

I bought this mainly because of the scent (or lack of). I love the tropical scent of the low SPF Hawaiian Tropic oil. Most of the high SPF's seem to have a really strong chemical smell that makes me sick (literally). This was a Coppertone spray that had virtually no scent even when first applied.

I use the arosol spray on me and mine. On the kids, it's never a problem. I spray them, and I can see what I'm doing. I get close, try to spray out of the wind, and have a sort of pattern- not just spraying in circles. As for myself, if I spray it on myself I end up burned somewhere I cannot reach. I point it at my back, but apparently sunscreen the air behind me. I have to ask someone else to get my back.

And I buy it at the wholesale club, BJ's for me. Then I get a good deal on multi-packs of large cans that will last me a good long time. We go to the neighborhood pool 3-4 times/week.
