Another ? for those who sew.........

Sydney has a white down comforter....and is leaving for college....would it be cheaper for me to find a sewer and just have her make a duvet cover for her comforter? We can't find the color we want in a duvet have found a comforter at company store but think it was going to be 100.00 for the size she needs??? And maybe I could get her to sew a couple that way when one is dirty she could take it off toss it and put another on? Stac

it's not that hard...start sheet shopping for some she likes. take measurements of exising comforter. then look for at least one size larger "flat" sheets. sew the 2 sheets together on 3 sides. you can fasten it closed (at the top) with ties, snaps or if someone has a button hole maker, buttons. if you like, buy a couple of fitted bottoms in the same pattern/color to match. if she's like most college kids, buy at least 2-3 bottoms cause they never do laundry soon enough, lol...

Sheets that are larger than the comforter would be great. Sew on 3 sides and hem the top. Then simple row of buttons and button holes would be good I'd think.

Omg that is so cute! I have an embroidery machine but I have not used it or sewn in a very long time. I think this is a really cute idea. It's a lot like the bookcrossing site where you release books out into the wild with tags on them and track their travel. There's a lot of them on the map!

Dress came yesterday - she had about 10 minutes to try it on before she had to run somewhere else. From what I could tell, it looked great, but the corset back is challenging - it is basically loops and a ribbon and didn't come with instructions. I figure it is going to take me 20 minutes to lace it up! It's going to make it a bit tricky to compare the two sizes up top (no easy popping one off and putting the other one one to compare head to head!), but we'll work on it today when I have more time. The dress is really heavy and seems to be very nice quality. Way nicer than things we looked at in the store that cost twice as much. I'm impressed so far. The underskirt is actually two layers fused together with the hem in between - not sure how I'll manage to replicate that. And the fabric content is listed as 100% polyester. Once I manage to get it on her and choose a size, I'll assess exactly how much hemming it needs, but I'm leaning more and more towards the seamstress option!

Donna, your chair really does look like a dark version of mine! Cara, I like mine a lot. I'm glad I bought it. And I'm equally pleased with my Lazy Boy desk chair. I'm sorry you were injured! Glad it wasn't worse. To quote Judge Judy: "If you want to live a long life, I have two words for you--don't fall." I repeated this to my son the other day when he asked if I'd like to have a bicycle and go riding with him and his boys. :-) As I said, I haven't been sewing in that alcove, but I signed up for an online watercolor class during the pandemic and have used the new chair and that space quite a bit. Unfortunately, I'm cut off from it temporarily because it's not heated and when I tried to use an electric heater I discovered the wall outlet was faulty. My son tried to replace it for me, only to find the ground wire hadn't been connected to it. I consulted with the helpful guys at the Electrical Wiring forum, and on their advice ordered an outlet tester. So I hope to be back using the alcove soon. I'm also happy with the lamp I linked. I like it so much that I bought a black floor lamp by the same manufacturer, for the piano.

Hi Again Amanda, Well, thx, don't know abt expert save, may be too soon to say, it's quite recent. Camera's acting up, but I noticed today, the center of the plant is quite erect (pardon me, don't know how else to say that). I deciding here & now, if I ever buy more Hahniis, I will only pot them in clay pots. I too have killed Sans. from underwatering; I don't often meet others who have, funny. Good analogy abt being the Gardenia of the Sans. world, funny we both know that. Had you ever read the Suicidal Gardenia thread, which had over 100 posts? I once printed out the whole thing & took it to a friend in hospital for his amusement, especially since he bloomed his Gardenia w/ no trouble. Basia, 4 yrs. w/ a 'Jade' seems a pretty good run. I had a very nice one I'd gotten w/ the pair in the photo above which I lost after abt 6 months, no idea why. It was a beauty, very dark, I was so bummed. Having heard of Lechuza Pon but never used it, I'll be curious to hear of your experiments afterwards.

Okay so another ? how do we keep the comforter from slipping around inside it? I don't own a sewing machine anymore or I could do this I used to but lost it in the fire...wonder if my mother in law does??? I could use hers adn Syd and I could do this together that would be fun and give us something to do since it is so flipping hot out! Stacy

Safety pins. Pin the comforter inside the duvet...Like one in each corner and one in the center between the corners...maybe? Not sure if you need the center pins but corners would hold it I'd think. I don't know what to tell you, I don't have one.

dd2 really didn't have much of a problem with hers slipping that much. in fact, they didn't use it all that often...the dorms are really warm to the point they use fans 24/7 all year...(another great grad gift)

Sew buttons on the old comfortor and button holes on the new cover and button them together. Big Bright Colorful Buttons.

My dd has a flannel duvet cover and it seems to hang on to the comforter inside pretty well.

I had ties on the top corners of my comforter and ties on the inside of the duvet, Stacy. That way they couldn't shift.

If you make a cover from sheets, go to an outlet store and buy 2nds of a really good brand, like Ralph Lauren. Then your duvet will last forever. And you don't HAVE to close the bottom, if you leave it long enough and tie the comforter in, the bottom will just hang over the end of the bed. Make the bottom out of the big hem at the top of the flat sheet. Three straight seams and a few pieces of twill tape for the ties and you could be done in an hour or so.

Yeah Mingo a hour or so.....you KNOW ME how can you really say that...LOL well my mom had a awesome sewing machine and my sis has it...since they are bringing Tan home next week they are going to bring it...my sis has never used it...trust me this will be sooooo funny!! Hmmmm wondering how close the closet outlet mall is...oh yeah Branson which is only a hop skip and jump from Mingo...maybe Syd and I need a road trip and then since it will only take ME a hour it will only take Mingo 5 mins to do this LMAO!!
