Need help for backsplash around bay window and sink

I am almost ready to give up. I only want to put a backsplash behind the sink and then something on the base of the bay window. I don't plan to backsplash anywhere else. I'd prefer a cream color, ceramic, rectangular tile with a little bit of color added (from glass tile or something else) that picks up some of the darker colors in the Santa Cecilia granite. Any ideas on this?

The ideas we've thought of already - granite at the bay window base (rejected because it would be too thick to be able to turn the handle to open the window); granite tiles (rejected because the color doesn't match the countertop granite). Ideas still under consideration: ceramic tile on bay window base with a bull nose tile on front edge and then continuing down to behind the sink; or wood trim molding on the lower part of the window which would eliminate the need for a bull nose tile and then just put tile on the bay window base and the backsplash behind the sink. If we put wood trim molding there, would that be a problem with water from the sink affecting the wood. (The window base is about 5 inches above the sink, but the bottom of the molding would only be about 2 inches above the sink). Anybody have ideas? Many thanks.

I also saved this photo below but don't know who the vendor is. This tile might be good. Anyone recognize it?

They do have Santa Cecila tiles, Dal-tile has them. However, how thick are your slabs? 2CM or 3CM? The tiles are 3/8 in thick, with thin-set below, still might interfer with the window knob. That knob seems low in the picture.

I don't think any tile will stay under enough to allow operation of the knob. Have you though of vinal or laminate tiles?

Your kitchen is beautiful, love the wall color with the white cabinets.

Thanks for the links to how to upload photos..I'm not too excited about yet another subscription to use an external site for my photos just to do this..The "test" page brings up a "browse" box which I assumed allowed you to pull up your image, but when I actually went to post, only the URL box showed up. I'll have to look into this a little more to see if there is anyway to avoid using another service. KitchenAddict & Circuspeanut - I Love your kitchens! KitchenAddict, if I ever get these posted, you'll see that we alomost have the same countertop, faucet, and all of us are even using white roller shades! (Tip- They can be hung backwords so you don't see the roll but the opening on the fastener is at the bottom so it could fall out easier. If you don't open and close it a lot, it's well worth it. I'm just super careful when I do it. For me, it's just a quick fix until I figure out what I want to use but considering painting a cool pattern on mine once I get a little further along into the project. I'll share those too as this progresses. Thanks for sharing the photos, they help a lot...Still hoping for more! Would love to see someone who has taken the tile all the way up around the sink window to help me decide.

Thanks prill...I'm leaning towards only doing tile in area to the left of the casing...then in the window area just doing paint and the casing down to the counter. I guess I'll just have to be more dilligent with cleaning. The Reef was the first tile that spoke to me...I really thought I was going to go for a more solid blue, but reef is so much softer....it allows me to play up the color of the walls more...not that I have a lot of walls...And, I found out that my designer can get it for about 12.50/sf where I was quoted around $15/sf.

No bull nose. My designer suggests running it the length of the counter and then running small pieces on the right side of the window to make a straight line up (on the left side of refrigerator) and then straight line from counter to edge of cabinet on right side of refrigerator. Nothing behind refrigerator. I have no experience with back splash install and want to make sure it's done correctly since my neighbor is installing and doesn't do it for a living. ;)

It's not crazy to not want a backsplash. The 6 inch pieces tend to look too tall IMO, but you could always try getting wider window trim so the 4 inch won't leave a gap. For behind the stove you can go for a simple stainless steel panel or tile up to the bottom of the vent hood.

I like the idea of stone for you but not sure about the bull nose ... not picturing it right I think. Couldn't you use something thinner like a pencil liner in the contrasting glass color you want with a few glass insets thrown in to match. What color accents are you interested in picking up from your stone?

nutbunch - our countertops are 3 cm thick. I haven't thought of laminate. Will look into that.

petra_granite - in retrospect I would have loved to use the contertop granite on the bay window area. We even had it measured at the time, but it would have raised the base of the bay window too high making it impossible to turn the handle of the window to open it.

remodelfla - I like the idea of glass inserts with ceramic tile. But it is still hard for me to visualize the front edge of the bay window as it turns down to the wall behind the sink. The contrasting color I'd like to bring out from the granite is the deep red or brown.

bill_vincent - very nice picture. Hadn't thought of that contrast idea. My window is lower down that the one pictured - mine is about 5 inches up from the countertop. Do you think if I framed the bottom window with wood trim molding that it would get too wet from water at the sink? I know I could put lots of coats of paint, but is that enough protection? Is there another material to use to frame a window when there is a water source nearby?

Yes, the paint WOULD give you the protection. However, so would the tile, if you were to continue it up onto the window shelf:

As for getting me down there, you're a couple of decades too late-- I did my time in Delmarva!!
