Fabricator Broke My Granite While Installing

Hello

my husband called to tell me they cracked the granite while installing it on the island. I flew home and called the granite shop to inform him that his fabricator cracked the granite. He tried to tell me that it was part of the granite which made me furious because he didn't even ask me how it happened. I told him that once I arrived home I'd call him with more information.

Fabricator was already fixing it when I got home and the fabricator told me that it didn't crack all the way through and It wasn't a big deal. My husband took a picture of it before they started fixing it and it definitely broke all the way through. I informed the fabricator that I didn't appreciate a lie. By this time, the granite guy arrived at my home.

My husband informed me that the fabricator had pleaded with him to not call and tell me what happened. He told my husband that he would fix it and I would never know. What was this guy thinking? Luckily the granite guy was licensed and he was the one who hired the fabricator.

The granite guy took full responsibility and told us to give them a chance to fix it. If I wasn't happy in the end, he agreed to get me a new piece. He stayed the entire time.

They did a pretty good job fixing it.
You can't feel where the crack is at and it's also in an area that won't be used that much. We had my kids try and find the crack and they couldn't.

I am so glad that my husband was home or else the fabricator would have hidden this from us. In the end, Granite guy gave us a pretty good discount with a 6 year warranty on entire granite vs the original 1 year warranty.

Gorgeous Granite! So glad they could fix it and were fair to you with the big discount and additional warranty. What is the name of the granite. Please more pictures....

When we first picked out our stone and put the deposit down, they went through the ceremony of putting your name on the slab. Ha! that meant nothing. I was insistent about picking the part I wanted on the peninsula so I had to go revisit "my slab". It was not our slab. They convinced me that it was by saying that it is part of the same lot and they are all identical like a slice a bread. I felt so uneasy that I sneaked back in to take a picture to compare with pictures we took from our original slab. To my surprise, that slab was different from the one I saw last. huh? I told them I wanted to see the exact slab that was going to be used in my kitchen and that's when they told me that they just take the next available slab based on the schedule so it doesn't matter if your name gets put on a slab, that slab will go to the next job scheduled. He guaranteed me that our job was next so I was looking at my slab. It worked out because I happen to like that slab more than the original but what if I didn't? Granted, they were all in the same family but to me a slab is like a painting. You fall in love with certain variations, pattern, coloring that may not be present in the next slab depending on stone. I came very close to showing up when they were actually cutting my stone, (which I would recommend to anyone that is really concerned) but definitely try to "visit" a few days prior to fabrication and ask to see the stone they are going to use for your job.

Thanks Everyone for all your responses hollysprings....In regards to fixing it with epoxy....After it cracked...when they tried to remove it ....the stone cracked in other places around the sink. Patrick said the lighter the stone and the more variations in it...the weaker it is... I am trying to look at this as just a small ripple in the scheme of things....I have confidence in him that he will do his very best. annkh...I had not even thought about donuts or cookies....Depending on the time of day they get here...I will certainly remember to do that...thanks so much for the suggestion. I am anxious to get it in...and post a picture... thanks again everyone for caring...this is such a fantastic group...so glad I found the forum!! What a help in so many aspects of this demo and remodel.

On our range cutout, they actually cut most of it out at their site but left a couple strips of granite running across the middle of the space, if that makes sense. Then they just cut out the two strips on site after installing it. I thought it was a nice compromise - the added strips gave stability to reduce risk of breaking, but by not cutting out the entire range space on-site they minimized any dust. Kitchenredo08, I hope you find another piece of granite that you love just as much, if not more! Hopefully no problems next time.

He knows what I know and that's if a customer knows where to look they will always see and be able to find a repair.

It's almost like an animal cruelty video. You can never unwatch it.

I do repairs all the time and the first words out of my mouth are "You will always be able to see this, because you know where it is."

Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Mistakes happen but it was wrong of the fabricator to try to cover it up and not want to tell anyone about it. He should have said "Im terribly sorry but the granite cracked. This happens sometimes. It can usually be repaired and you will never know where it cracked, but let me call the granite shop and we will figure out how to proceed." Kudos to the granite shop for taking responsibility, giving you a discount and a longer warranty. That is what a responsibile business owner should do. He should not work with that fabricator anymore.

He tried to tell you it didn't go all the way through? Maybe he meant all the way across? It appears completely separated and offset in the photo. Did the corner break off? There was a recent thread on a corner repair where someone sat on the counter and it broke, if you want to see the repair and comments about it.

The lying and covering up is terribly unprofessional and annoying. No one likes to be treated like that. It really separates the men from the boys.

Hope this resolves to your satisfaction. Very pretty stone!

It is a very pretty stone. I'd love to see a larger shot if you are interested in posting a long view as well as the close up of the repair.

Integrity - where has it gone. I agree with snookums - separates the men from the boys.

Here's a better close up. You can see the crack but It will be in an area where there won't be much traffic.

What's the name of your Granite? It's beautiful, looks similar to what I am getting installed in 2 weeks!! Mine is delicatus jupurana!

Thank you, the name of the granite is bianco antico. My husband picked it out.

Thank you for posting a pic....should have known it was Bianco Antico - I am always drawn to that stone!

I think that repair looks good and it's in a 'good spot'. Are you happy with it?

Hi,

Yes, I happy with my granite, it is so pretty. There are so many areas where you can see gold, silver, and white flakes. I also installed the Bianco Siligranit sink in black.

If that happened to me, and I got a sweet discount / extended warranty, I'd be smiling every time I looked at the crack. It's in a discrete area and if you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't know it was there.

That's a solid 'win' in my book.

Nice repair-textbook.
when the crack matches up and becomes tight a good repair like this is possible using very thin penetrating clear glue.
