Knob eye candy (for those who are not faint at heart!)

I've been waiting two months for these to be made...I just wanted to share. They'll be on our laundry room cabinets next to my son's safari tent bedroom:

They're really well made, each when you place your order. I just love them...I'd have done more in the house from this manufacturer...but OUCH I couldn't afford them LOL I had used a cheaper knob but it broke so ummm I had to order these heh heh

Awesome!! Later in life your son will wonder why knobs just aren't as cool as the ones he grew up with! I love creating these magical things for kids.

I do own "The Well-Designed Mixed Garden". It is a pretty good book. Traci's style is not exactly mine, but there is a lot of good information. It would be very helpful if the tables in the back were available in electronic format. My biggest complaint about that book is the size. I do 90% of my reading in bed and it is just too big and heavy for that. I see that the local library has "Timeless Landscape Design" on order. I submitted a hold request so hopefully they will notify me when it comes in. I know that a major reason that Gordon Hayward's books have connected with me is because I really like his style. There is something about reading about design concepts and seeing concrete examples that I would love to have in my own garden. "The Welcoming Garden" seemed to be mostly other people's designs with Gordon throwing in commentary. I also could not quite figure out all the plan diagrams that seemed to be randomly scatter through out the book. Do they match any of the pictures? I did not think that it was nearly as good as "Taunton's Front Yard Idea Book" (another book that I need to borrow or purchase). - Brent

I had six open shopping bags of canna on my cellar floor through winter, and even after being completely submerged for four days when the sump pump quit working, they were just fine. In fact, I forgot about them and was reminded by the unfurling leaves in June to take them outside. Treating some 'workhorse' dahlia varieties like you suggested would probably work okay, Morpheus, and if your three varieties of big box discount dahlia fail, you can always replace them easy enough. Some great varieties (that are quite nice) to treat that way would be Chilson's Pride or Mingus Toni, both of which have almost indestructible tubers and plenty of them, too. When you start collecting 'racehorse' varieties that can be difficult to overwinter, throwing them nonchalantly in the cellar may not work so well. Experienced growers occasionally lose the majority or part of their stock to storage issues, and some beautiful varieties are extremely hard to overwinter. That's why I suggest to folks just beginning that it is wise to store your favorite varieties a couple different ways in different locations until you settle on a storage method that gives you consistent results. There are some that treat dahlias as annuals, and just buy them each year, avoiding the work of digging and storing. Once you start a collection, it is harder to treat them like annuals as the same varieties may not be available year to year.

4 months. Lived in basement where we have a full wetbar, and a single dishdrawer. Moved old fridge down there, bought a 40$ single electric burner, and moved old microwave and our champ the Breville toaster oven down there. Had to walk through construction everyday to get from bedrooms to basement but not bad. Yes, I hear the comment "Why did you have remodel your pretty kitchen" all of the time. Those that have cooked with me know immediately, it wasn't a cooking kitchen. It was fine for entertaining, sort of, but not really a functional space for the type of cooking I like to do. Thanks to all for the compliments. We are loving it. No it wasn't cheap, and I worked very hard to save money. Most appliances are scratch/dent/ebay/craigslist. In fact all but two are. I saved about 40% on these items going this route. I did have to source missing parts and do some repairs, but I like this, and it doesn't really bother me. Hats off to the subcontractors: plumbing, electrical, and cabinetry to pull this off was a trick, but each was an artist. The cabinetry is obvious, the full faced doors are all spot on, butcher block tops, drawers, panels, rolling china cabinet... Challenged in many ways. The electricians had to run a 100 Amp subpanel closer to the kitchen. There are 3 240 runs alone for those ovens. They wired the LeGrand Adorne system under the cabinets. So functional, and discrete. The plumber had to get a drain and water lines over to the wet bar, as well as stub a spot over to the prep island. There are two "island loops" under each island. The granite guy fabricated the steel sheet to hold the large overhang over the rolling china. Still cheaper than a china cabinet I don't have room for elsewhere. I got to run the central vac pan under the ovens, the reverse osmosis water lines, install the sinks, the hoods, the appliances, the tile backsplash. I also installed the lights, most of the switches, and did 50% of the painting. I even pleaded my case with the city inspector on the issue of make up air for my hood. My contractor was a patient man letting me be so involved, but I chose him for this reason. Do you think I should make a separate reveal post and post just before and after pics? I do plan on getting some done better and submitting to Houszz as that service was quite helpful to me as you all were.

Very cool! I have been searching for "hand" knobs (small-ish). Not "hand-made" (well, they can be, of course), but knobs in the shape of the human hand. The two I have seen I don't love (Siro - body line, and Pine River Pewter Southwest designs). Let me know if you have come across any in your shopping forays! Thanks! Robin

It is obvious to anyone who has read your posts for any length of time that underneath the witty prose is a heart of gold and a mother who loves her DS more than anything. But today as I looked at the beautiful giraffe knobs you had made, I saw much more than gorgeous handcrafted knob eye candy. I saw a mom who is so devoted and would do anything to make her dear boy smile and feel loved.

You are clearly talented and when you speak about design, you see the smallest detail, and bring to this forum an expertise that has gained the trust of us all. These giraffe knobs however, are much more than cabinet hardware, they go to the heart of what each of us is trying to do in our own way; to make our houses, homes. You have made your beautiful house a home. Thank you for sharing and for being the special person you are who goes out of her way, not only for her family, but for all of us on GW.

Wow, plucky what a sweet thing to say :) We're having a bad day, so you brought tears to my eyes (he's sick again and has given me his flu). Thank you, really from the bottom of my heart, thank you :)

Ok now for serious stuff :) They are 5 3/4" high and about an inch at their widest. They weigh a ton (I like hefty knobs..kind of like hefty jewelry heh heh) They're oil rubbed bronze plated pewter. Currently they are dancing and counting in Chinese..I hope he'll give them up and let me put them on the doors at some point (he did the same thing with the squirrels in the kitchen....he slept with one of those for a few days...the kids a goofball).

Oh and they're by Gayle Bright (ordered through Knob Gallery). I just couldn't get DH all excited about a new knob LOL So I thought I'd share with some TKO's :)

Now to search for hands....(a tough search because it brings up every knob made by hand, verses shaped like a hand!)

Those are fantastic knobs. I have to agree with Plucky...you are building a home for your son, the thought and effort you have put in amazes me.

If I'd have known what a good excuse kids were to do crazy stuff in my house....I'd have had twenty or thirty by now :oP Of course then I'd have no money to do crazy things with....we'll just stick with something like one or three (this month we're going to shoot for twins IVF).

I picked up our bathroom cupboard doors today. We've been without doors for a couple of months while the glass was being blown for us. I absolutely love them...but can't find the freaking screws to hang them LOL and the appraisor comes at 10 am tomorrow!

Oh, gosh, those are great!! Plucky expressed so well what I think all of us here feel! Sorry you and your little guy are sick . . . I've had an upper resp infection since Nov 12 and now the whole family has picked up a deep chest cough that I have on top of the other crap. I hate this. Hope you'll both be well quickly.

Moonkat...I'll adopt you if you take over dog duties. That means he sleeps in your room, you take him for 3000 walks a day, and you can learn to live with puddles on occasion (not outside) LOL

Pluky I have another room in my brain I haven't gotten to do yet. I want to recreate Tatooine (star wars planet where luke was living with his aunt and uncle). I could do a black sky ceiling with lots of stars and planets (including a death star light fixture) Then the dessert on the walls with speeders, etc., flying by. So if I have twins hopefully they'll love star wars heh heh

Mind you we'll have to buy another house....but that just means I get to do another kitchen LoL

Host that deep chest cough is killing us as well. He is finally over his high temps, but the coughing makes him grumpy which makes me grumpy! So we're just a couple of grumps locked in our house.

Gail I have looked far and wide and coton knobs just don't exist. That's the problem with having a rare dog :OP If we had labs...we'd be in great knob shape!

He's going to be worked into the house as well. We have a cat room under a stair case (about 6' long and 3' wide by 4' high). It has a large door to it with a smaller kitty door in it. I'm having the same artist who did the bedroom do a take on the "Dogs playing poker" with our two cats playing poker, and the coton will be the dealer ;)

Awwwww, that's so sweet that he slept with the squirrel knobs! At least if you have to be confined to your home you have a lovely home to be confined to. Your son is very lucky to have you for a mother.

no way!! Those handles were on order till I saw the manhandle LOL. I LOVE them - remind me of home - deep dark Africa. They couldn't go to a nicer home then yours.

Get well soon - lots of chicken soup, hot water bottles and good books

BTW in my search for the perfect accent, one of dh's friends came up with a good idea IF you can afford it... fully custom door handles. He used the company I linked below for his company - building, boardroom, signage etc. It's just an idea but maybe one you can explore with a different company
