Instant hot water dispenser owners, what model did you buy?
Comments (17)Just wanted to second the information on longevity (or not) of these things-- We have hard water--and have gone through two of these things in 10years. I am told no matter how much you spend, that without softening the water, 5 years is a high score. (my second one just bit the dust last month) I have loved the convenience--and will most likely get yet a third one when I update my kitchen this year. For a nominal cost it has been great over the years---from water to quickly heat baby bottles in the early years, to tea and coffee and other instant foods....and I've even used the scalding water for cleaning from time to time. I do not use a filter. I would spend as little as possible and go into it knowing you'll probably only get a couple of years out of it. (our most recent one was an insinkerator). My husband swore when it broke last month that he'd never install another one of these "pieces of !@#$" BUT a week later he said in passing---"I kind of miss the instant hot" So there you have it!...See MoreHot chocolate vs hot cocoa
Comments (16)In preparing for winter, I got out my hot chocolate/hot cocoa mixes and ingredients. I found 1/2 box of Godiva Dark Chocolate Truffle Hot Cocoa, 1/2 box Ghiradelli Hot Chocolate mix, and The Fresh Market Hot Cocoa mix. I thought this would be a good time to taste test. To my surprise, the less expensive TFM was a little bit better. I combined all three into a large Mason jar. This winter I have been heating half & half, milk, a TJ's truffle, then adding the combined mixes to the hot milk. Add marshmallow fluff. Wow, now that's a low cal breakfast drink. I don't know who to credit with this recipe, but it's good. I have been making half batches: Hot Cocoa Mix Makes about 20 servings 3 cups nonfat dry milk 2 cups confectioners' sugar 1 1/2 cups Dutch-processed cocoa powder 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips 1/4 teaspoon salt Combine ingredients in large bowl. Working in two batches, pulse ingredients in food processor until chocolate is finely ground. Store in airtight container for up to 3 months. To make hot cocoa, stir 1/3 cup of this mix into 1 cup of hot milk. Top with whipped cream or mini marshmallows....See MoreInduction vs. instant hot water
Comments (5)Well, how impatient are you? I don't care for instant hots. They're not boiling. They're definitely scalding. They use energy even when you don't want hot water. What are you going to use it for? For making tea, by the time you put the kettle on, get the tea and the pot or cups, etc., you should pretty well have boiling water (unless you overfilled the pot), especially if you have boost and aren't in the middle of cooking something else. And a rolling boil makes such better tea! Same for pasta. By the time you've opened the pasta, and gotten out a wooden spoon, the pot should be boiling. Even with my cheap little induction unit I got before the remodel I had to relearn habits because things heat up so fast. Like don't think you have time to chop anything! Some people don't want to put the kettle on. They just want hot water now! A never ending urn. If that sounds like you, you might want the instant hot. Otherwise, it doesn't seem worth bothering with....See MoreNo hot water = instant hot water dispenser?
Comments (1)"can I just cap off the hot water line and install an instant hot water dispenser" Probably not ... if the pipes are that bad, they would probably crumble as you try to put a cap on them, and are ready to rupture in the wall anyway. "I don't want to replace the pipes because, to me, it's easier to run an electrical line then to crack open a plaster wall. " Ask a plumber ... they can usually repipe without having to make huge holes....See Moreperel
