Island Seating Configurations

We are hoping for a kitchen renovation next year and I need help with island ideas. We are opening up a wall and the new space will be about 20' long and I would like a large island. We will use the island for arts/crafts, baking, and eating on one end. We would like the seats to not be in a "lineup", but 2 on one end and maybe 2 on the side. I was trying to find out what size island we would need to have enough room for it all. Not sure if I could laso fit a prep sink or cooktop on the further end (away from seating). The other idea would be to have a separate space for arts and crafts, but right now anyways, it seems my kids are always at the kitchen island we have now... They are 6 and 7 so I think we will have many more years of needing a big space for projects... Anyone have pictures of an island like this?

We are doing new construction and I am doing an island somewhat like you describe. I will have seating on one end and prep area on the opposite end. On the long side, I will have 3 seats and the short side, 2 seats. My island will be approximately 10 feet by 4 feet of counter (less cabinets, obviously). I wish I had pictures, but I can't figure out how to get my kitchen drawings on here b/c I don't have a scanner.

Here you go: You have to use HTML on this forum. Do you really need 27" of counter overhang on the end? That could be usable space! A trash pullout! Vertical pan storage! More drawers! Maybe you have space out the wazoo in your kitchen and are a family of really really tall, long legged people. If that's what works for you, that's what's most important. I'd want to squeeze every inch of potential storage space out of that island.

If you want maximum storage go with maximum draw width otherwise you loose a lot of space to hardware. We have 42" drawers with two pulls per drawer for aesthetics but truthfully with bluemotion full extension glides you only need one hand to open or close them and some of them are really heavy when fully loaded. In our old kitchen we had 4 18" drawers next to one another and I hated the lost storage which was about 8" from the inside of one drawer to the inside of the drawer next to it. Granted these were side mount drawers, undermount drawers have less wasted space on the side.

My island has an overhang of 15 inches on two sides. I can seat 4, or 5 in a pinch, in an L configuration.
