replacing my kitchen desk

With the new renovation, I am not planning to have a desk. I will be losing my area for my printer, files, and shredder. I would love to see photos of what others have done to keep these items in a kitchen when there is not desk area.

I don't have a photo because the kitchen isn't quite done yet...but we've got a peninsula in our new kitchen. At the end of the peninsula we have double doors under the counter, and two pullouts. We'll put the printer/scanner/copier on the top pullout, printer paper, shredder, etc on the bottom pullout. We've asked the electrical guy to install an outlet inside the cabinet....Above the double doors is a drawer that we'll use for our "junk" drawer - stapler, scissors, etc. We opted to not have a desk in the kitchen because we only have laptops now, and we both use the computers all over the house - nice to not be tied to a desk.

Most of our files are on our laptops (networked, natch); the hard copies that we use infrequently are in a smallish file cabinet in another room.

I put in dual caves in our sunroom for our desk and files
There is a pull out "cutting board" to use as a work surface.
The bottom drawer can be files plus I have another file cabinet style piece of furniture in the great room.
I don't have a printer in the caves but you could put one in.
Also, my shreddie machine is in another room.

Different functions require different layouts - I would much rather optimize the function of each hutch, by sizing doors and drawers for their intended use, than make them the same for the sake of looks, and have to try to make them function properly. I know in my house, those horizontal surfaces would be clutter magnets! That said: what will you store in the 15" cabinets of the command center? How deep are those cabinets? Are you sure you want open shelves there? My command center is behind closed doors, because I am honest about how we live - when I had a desk near the kitchen, the bulletin board was a mess, and I never sat at the desk, because there was too much stuff on it (and the kitchen table was 4 feet away). When I remodeled the kitchen, I built in desk functions, without a place to sit: file drawers; small drawers for pens, stapler, etc.; shelves for in and out boxes, envelopes, scratch paper, note pads, my budget ledger. Inside the doors I have a calendar and a magnetic white board. This also turned out to be a good spot for dog supplies - one shelf has treats, brushes, toys, etc. I also put two outlets inside the cabinet - I love having all our chargers in one place, and out of sight!

Not sure if you want to stay with a traditional style, if not, Ikea's Borghamn handle is 1 9/16" wide and so might just have the right spacing to fit your existing screw holes. They're modern with a slightly rustic vibe, so, not sure that'll work with your doors, but if they would fit, it would eliminate a backplate. Sorry, my photoshopping skills leave to be desired...

Great questions, thank you all! Yes, in my mind the kitchen and the dinette are the same room. The transition in the photograph is the only transition in the house. On the hardwood side, the hardwood extends throughout the entire house. Here, it bumps up against the kitchen/dinette area, which has this vinyl glued onto plywood, which floats a half centimeter above the hardwood, creating a small trip hazard. Our style is definitely mid century modern with fun bohemian touches. We have a lot of artwork that’s fun and whimsical, and it’s a pretty small house. So while I’m open to a bold flooring choice, I also don’t want it to feel cluttered or busy. I love our hardwood and really wish it extended into the kitchen! But I’m worried if we got new hardwood installed in the kitchen/dinette area, it wouldn’t match and it would look weird. And I don’t want to pay to refinish the old hardwood, because it’s in good shape and it extends all through the house! That would be a lot of refinishing! So it seems like the best option would be...something else that’s not this horrible vinyl. Cork titles? A more updated vinyl? Having never had glued-on vinyl before, will I have to replace the subfloor when we pull it up? Should we get something installed on top of the vinyl that’s already there, or will that just further heighten the trip hazard?

Sorry, but THREE kitchens in three years is such a colossal environmental waste ... I know we all consume things that we don't need to consume, but this level of waste is bordering on a level of unethical. Gotta agree. You can donate /re-sell things, but we should all be more aware of our waste. Two things have opened my eyes to this in the last few years: - We ripped out our leaky shower and (to save money) took the old stuff to the dump ourselves. Wow, it was an eye opener. So much garbage that will still exist 100, 200, 300 years from now. Some of it just because people wanted "updated colors". - I attended a teacher workshop at the recycling center, and I learned SO MUCH. I've always come down strongly on the side of keeping your life "moderate in size" and buying things used. I thought I was a pretty decent recycler -- I wasn't. I understand the process so much better now, and I have made some changes in how I do things at home. I'm particularly trying to avoid plastics in all forms -- that's the biggest problem we face today in recycling. I don’t know what the square footage is for your kitchen, but it seems like you want to include all of the amenities of a much larger kitchen in a space that’s simply not big enough. Please note that I’m not saying your kitchen is small - I’m simply saying that an island big enough for a 42” cooktop + seating requires a kitchen with a larger footprint. Good points. This is kinda the elephant in the room.

a2gemini - those cabinets are awesome. Were they custom made? I like how the doors slide in. What are the dimensions of these cabinets? I am putting in a floor to ceiling cabinet that will serve as my pantry. Perhaps I could put a pull our drawer at the bottom for the printer. I think the shredder will have to go somewhere else.

I don't use a printer often enough to want it in the kitchen - I have a desktop in the family room, and the printer lives there. Shredder is in a closet, come out a couple of times a month.

But I file stuff often. I got rid of a desk in my kitchen remodel, so I added file drawers to a floor-to-ceiling cabinet wall. The drawer above is for phone book, pens, scissors, stamps, check book, etc. - desk stuff.

Thanks for posting the photo. I don't really have another place for my printer. Our kitchen table will probably end up being our desk. Kids are gone from our house now but I don't want to travel stairs for the printer. We tried that and it didn't work.

We have a spot by the front door where we have a command center of sorts. It's not totally finished, but it's most definitely in use. (Please excuse the cluttery reveal.) The printer is in the lower cabinet. We don't have a shredder, but if we did, I think it could fit down there, too.

DH stands at this spot every night and unloads from his day: clipboard, paperwork, dayplanner, etc. And his boots. : ) Wonder what he has on his feet today, LOL.
