Help me pick a 30 inch undermount SS sink

I have settled on an undermount 30 inch stainless steel sink. However, I don't have a clue about what brand. Can I get some suggestions from you all? Thanks!

We love our Julien 30" sink. Ours happens to be 0-radius (90Â° corners), 17" front-to-back, and 10" deep, but they also make other corner options (ever-so-slightly radiused to radiused), and different f-to-b and depth dimensions. Julien sinks are 16 gauge SS (the lower the gauge, the thicker the metal and the better at resisting dents, and quietness). They also come with their own SS strainer baskets (satin nickel baskets, while similar in look, will tarnish or otherwise react poorly to Barkeeper's Friend--BKF, a popular cleaner for SS sinks).

Other popular SS sinks on this forum are Ticor, Blanco (18 gauge?), as well as others. My parents just had an Artisan sink installed (contractor-supplied) and they are very happy with it. I only found positive reviews about them online.

Thanks, cat mom for the information. Especially helpful to know what gauge means! By baskets, do you meant the grid thing that goes on the bottom?

I was all set to order the Rohl Allia. Went to the store and, while I was there, looked around at all the bath and kitchen displays. I got to the Kohler section and saw an interesting display. There was a large divided sink with a heavy SS frying pan in it. The frying pan had a sign challenging people to try to damage the sink with the pan. Not to miss such an opportunity, I picked up the pan and dropped it from a height of 6 inches into the sink. Nothing happened. So I then picked up the frying pan and tapped the edge of the sink. Again, no damage. Then I whacked the sink a half dozen times harder than I thought any accident could cause. No damage-not even a scratch. The pan just bounced off. I was amazed. So I asked the salesperson, who had just told me that fireclay was pretty durable, if it could take that sort of abuse. She just shook her head. So I ordered the Kohler Bakersfield sink instead.

huango, I was thinking about you the other day wondering if you started your reno yet! I definitely do recommend the fabricator. I worked with Brian DeLano, Vice President of Weiss Sheet Metal in Avon, MA: 508-583-8300. They only fabricate the countertop, they do not template or install. He referred me to Jordan at Aggregate Design in East Boston: (617) 567-1315. If you are a DIYer and you have a simple counter run, you could probably save a good amount of money by doing the template and install yourself. To answer the various questions: Sleevepresto...No, we don't have any problems using the faucet in the left bowl. Its reach falls just short of the drain, so it's a few inches in. What's nice about my faucet, though, is that I can dock it in any position...so I can direct the spray/stream to other parts of the large bowl (I'll post pics at the end of this post). My faucet has a 9-1/2" reach, so when getting a faucet, I recommend something very similar...regardless of the sink you decide to go with. Double bowl sinks, in general, need the longer reach to reach both bowls. BTW...You don't have to mount the faucet anywhere in particular, but if you want to be able to use the faucet in both sinks then you do need to mount it b/w them. Pickle2...My S405D fit in a 36" sink base. When I was looking for sinks, my KD told me we that any sink at least 1/2" narrower than the sink base would work. At 35-1/4" wide, the S405D is 3/4" narrower, so it should work in your sink base. I should note that when I purchased this sink the exterior dimensions were listed as 35-1/8" wide...but that's just 1/8" less than the specs they list now. You may have to scribe the sides a bit, but several people have done this for other sinks with no problems. Now, some pictures of what the Kohler Vinnata can do. Other faucets may also do this, so if you have your heart set on a different faucet, check to see if you can do the same with your chosen faucet. (You may have to find it installed somewhere to check as this is not necessarily mentioned in descriptions...I know it wasn't mentioned anywhere for my faucet...I discovered this while playing with it.)

"When you sandwich the sink rim between the heavy counter material and the cabinet side there's zero extra space if the cabinet side tops are all installed level. No possiblity of any space opening in the future.." Good theory, little real-world relevance. First, the sink flange would have to be rabbeted into the cabinet tops perfectly flush. Secondly, tops aren't the exact same thickness throughout and nearly all have to be shimmed somewhat. That means there will be a gap the thickness of the shims between the sink flange and stone bottom. That means an uneven silicone joint and on the recommended slight positive reveal that won't look good. When a sink is pushed against a stone bottom by straps, the gap is tight and consistent no matter what the shims are doing. Furthermore, if the sink ever has to be replaced, it's now much more difficult because the cabinet sides have to be unzipped to get the sink out and reinstalled to get the new sink in. A strapped sink is replaced in little over an hour by backing off two bolts. Using cabinet tops to support sinks is not good practice.

Like catmom I have a Julien sink. Mine is the classic 30 x 16" and while it's nice and deep I'm not loving it as much as she loves hers. I got a disposal so the basket -- often priced separately -- wasn't a benefit.

Must confess I had to fit this sink into old cabinets so I was very restricted to a 16" front-to-back. Also, I had to have something that was in stock -- we didn't have time to wait.

Otherwise, I can't see that mine is all that much nicer than my sister's Franke quality wise. Those are good sinks and, as catmom said, so are Blanco and Ticor -- a big favorite on this forum, and way less expensive.

The critical prices differences seem to be in the gauge 16 vs 18 (16 is heavier). After that, it seems to be a question of features and shopping.

I don't regret my purchase; it's fine, it's handmade and it's installed -- LOL. I wouldn't go with Julien again though unless I had a very specific reason.

The basket is the drain basket. It was included with our Julien sink (at no extra cost--which they often are with other sinks). We did get our sink grid from Julien, too (that we did pay for separately)--it is SS as well.

At the time (late '06), Julien had lowered their prices to be more accessible to the US market (it's a Canadian company). The price for our sink was comparable to the similarly sized Blanco, which was 18 gauge.

I used the Artisan 30 x 18 sink. No problems so far. It's pretty nice. I chose it over the Ticor because the grid had larger open squares and the Ticor grid looked like narrow spacing on the grid. I thought the larger spacing would let veg peelings etc wash down through the grid to the disposal more easily.

It's 18 gauge, 10" deep and just under $250!

I got the Ticor from Overstock, but it won't get here until tomorrow. I can't wait to see it!

I like the Oliveri
Undermount. 30L, 18W and 10 deep. (with my thick
granite counters being almost 11.5 inches deep)
Brushed stainless steel, Some insulation to be quiet.

Oliveri makes sinks with any configuation you like.
They make industrial size, european style and ....
grids, cutting boards, sink racks, insert tubs....

This is the sink I chose and love it.
