2cm or 3cm for Quartz

I'm having Zodiaq installed and I have a section about 18" by 21" that is like a overhang/peninsula at the end of one counter. I'm being told by the fabricator that I'll need plywood under the 3cm slab in that area, despite having some cleats and a post under there for support.

Now my GC is asking me to debate having 2 cm with plywood underneath vs. 3cm because he says the plywood under 3cm in the peninsula area will show through. I can't figure out whether the 2cm all through the kitchen would be fine. Will the seam be visible for the edging?

If it's rodded underneath... you should not need a plywood base. There have been recent posts of clever ways people inserted flat metal rods under the granite for support. I'm a little surprised because your overhang is not that large. If there's no way around it or it's too much work $$ you can have your cabinet guy use some moulding to cover any gaps or plywood that might show through

The difference with quartz is that the manufacturer warranty it and installers are certified by that manufacturer and must use their specifications and requirements so the warranty is good. They won't give you the same leeway to come up with unique solutions sometimes. I would contact Zodiac and find out what requirements they give their installers for that size and type of overhang and then work from there. You can probably find a telephone number or email on their website.

HI Mustangs! :) I had a full-height granite backsplash in my former home. It was 3cm...only because that's what they carried. If it's the same as your counters, at least it'll come from the same slab(s) and you'll know it matches. A caution...for some reason, my builder insisted the backsplash go in before my appliance garage, because that's what he "normally" does. Due to the unplanned thickness (most people before me had 4" backsplashes and somehow the appliance garage measurements were "standard"), the sides of my garage had to be cut down to fit flush with the front of the upper cabinet. The extra thickness inside the garage reduced the amount of space I had. Of course the shortfall of space meant my perfectly planned/measured, well-thought out toaster oven purchased specifically for that space...would NOT FIT!! Grrrr....I was so mad!!! Lesson learned. Put in appliance garage before backsplash...regardless of what builder "normally" does. Haha!

I've been routinely quoted a 20/30% price difference between 2cm and 3cm quartz, with basic fabrication. If you think about it, you have 50% more quartz ... The price difference was enough to pay for a mitered edge (=looking thicker than 3cm) for countertops intalled against a wall (not on an island, because there are more edges).

The choice that you will be making is purely aesthetic in my opinion. 2CM with a laminated edge does look a little "more thikcer" than the single thickness that is evident in a 3CM edge, but again - this is purely aesthetics, and up to YOU.... Check with your Fabricator to see what their track record has been in their experience with laminating Quartz slabs..... we do both with no problems................. Bottom line is either will work for you - YOU just have to decide "which" look is most attractive for YOUR taste... hope that helps kevin

99% of all quartz manufacturers will not have 30mm in jumbos. You will have to go into the color you like and see if a jumbo is available on their site The four you have listed there are Jumbos available if in stock.
