Do you store your dishes in a drawer?

We will be building in the near future and I am in the process of planning the kitchen. The bank of cabinets w/ the sink is 10'6" long. The sink will be centered and the dishwasher will be to the right of the sink. That leaves about 20-24" of space for drawers. I have seen pics of a dish drawer w/ a slideout silverware drawer inside it. Anyone have that set up? Also, do you have a 2 drawer stack or 3. What do you store in the other drawers? I currently have the dishes in an upper cabinet, but the new plan only has an 18" upper cabinet. That cabinet will have the glasses in it.

I have a 27" wide drawer system for my dishes & silverware. The top drawer holds 2 sets of silverware side-by-side. I don't think I would like it being an inset drawer because that would be two pulls to get to it, and I'm always getting in there just for a spoon or a knife.
The middle drawer has my "everyday" dishes (mismatched Corelle, Italian bowls, etc) and the bottom drawer has my "company" dishes (a matching set of defunct Eddie Bauer stoneware).
Since my cabs are 30" deep, the dish drawers hold a lot. For example, the bottom drawer holds an entire set for 12 of big plates, salad plates, rimmed bowls, unrimmed bowls (couldn't decide which I liked), cups & saucers.
The location is across from the DW, which makes it easy to put away clean dishes, but to the right of the range, for "serving out", across the island out to the dining table. Hopefully that makes sense and helps you with your plan.

I store dishes in a drawer-my dishwasher drawer bwahahahahaha!

I plan on incorporating dish storage into (real) drawers in my remodel as well. I don't think I'd want the silver in a drawer inside the dish drawer, though--I only want to open one thing to get to anything, which is why I dislike most cabinet pullouts (I have to open one or two doors and THEN a drawer!!??).

DH enjoys the final product when I've done a tablesetting. He does think I am a bit nuts while I am mapping out a table, but oh well, everyone has some hobby, no? That said, he doesn't approve of the cabinets in my office being filled with heavy dishes. He keeps warning me that the cabinets are going to just fall off of the wall sooner or later. I store all of my red dishes for Valentines, 4th of July and Christmas overflow in the cabinets over my desk in the office. Also in the office cabinets are my stacking plates, 20 Thanksgiving plates (Kohl's sale last Fall), 20 W/S white pasta bowls, 20 square white salad plates. Oh, 2 trifle bowls as well. Then there is the pantry closet - I store my "Autumn" china - service for 12, missing some pieces, which my DM gave me. The china was her wedding china so I love to use it as soon as the Summer ends. Lenox Holiday China - full service for 20 plus extra dinner plates stored in closet in D/R. Serving pieces are being stored at DM as she has a full basement crying out for dish storage. Lenox "Amythest", my wedding china is stored in the china closet in the D/R. Full service for 16. Everyday white W/S bistroware is in the kitchen cabinets - service for 16. Do you see where I'm going with this? I am not accounting for all of the stemware, serving dishes and the like which I have accumulated over the years:). Most are in the pantry closet, but many are stashed here and there!. I don't purchase everything in sets. My Thanksgiving plates from Kohls have a leaf pattern on the edge, so I picked colors from the leaves and purchased accompanying solid color plates to complete the place settings. Also, I've found with using white dishes, I can play with the table a bit more putting in different whites or colors if I like. No basement in our home, so I have made creative use of just about every other space, conventional or not. I just gave DB and DSIL my Mikasa (forget the pattern name) dishes as they have the same pattern, and I replaced the Mikasa with the bistroware which is much more versitile for me. Then there are the linens, oh my. I have so many tablecloths and napkins it is sick. But remember all of these were collected over 20 some odd years. I love to do nice tablesettings and to do them, a gal must have the things that are needed! We host all of the holidays at our home, so I guess I can somewhat justify having all of the necessary items to entertain 10-20 people at a time. I actually thought I had a dish problem until I found this forum. Can't wait to read more responses. Great topic!

We have 2 5' long reclaimed shelves that store our everyday plates, bowls, coffe cups (though my 8 week nursling disagrees with caffeine), little plates (need more of these), and canister set I use often. Love the easy access to get and put away: My almost 4 year old has her own drawer close to the floor. She gets and puts away her own "dishes" Finally we use these glasses on a daily basis for our brita: Love how easy it is to access everything. Our open shelves do at times look a bit barren when both dish drawers are full.

We put in all drawers in our base cabinets in the renovation. Love it...all dishes and cookware are stored in the drawers. We have the Blum metal side/wood front drawers, the same as the IKEA. They can hold up to 100 pounds each, which means you can easily store a whole set of dishes in them. With the Blumotion soft close feature, we didn't need any of the contraptions that IKEA and other companies sell to hold plates in place. I just put down a soft cushy liner, then stacked the dishes on top of that with sufficient space in between each stack to allow clearance. The drawers are deep, and the stacks are high, so everything stays in place. When you open and close the drawers, nothing moves or rattles. I'd never go back to doors and shelves, and with my bad back, will probably never buy a house in the future that doesn't have drawers in the base cabinets.

We store all of our glasses, coffee cups, and toddler cups in a drawer lined with that bumpy drawer liner from costco. The plates and bowls (mostly china) are in the drawer underneath the drawer with glasses and cups. During the day, it is often my 4 year old and 2 year old who empty most of the dishwasher! I LOVE having all the dishes in drawers. No more chairs being hauled into the kitchen when the kids need plates or cups. We have had no problems having china and glasses in the lower drawers, even with a house full of kids. The only adjustment was the first few weeks in the new kitchen when we would reach for the cupboard above the coffee maker when looking for coffee cups. :)

LOL, fori! I use the bottom dw drawer to hold things I've hand washed while they air dry. : )

To the OP, I use a drawer to store my dishes and love it. Right now the drawer they're in is temporary until my DH finishes the hutch they'll go in eventually. I was going to put them in the upper cabinets of the hutch but I like them in a drawer so much, I'll do the same in the hutch. My silverware will be in drawers just above the dish drawers in the same hutch. No pics yet but I'll post them when it's done.

I wanted my "everyday" silverware and dishes to be close at hand and easy to unload from the DW. My DW is immmediately to the right of the sink. Next to it are three drawers. The top one holds our everyday silverware and some misc. utensils. The middle drawer holds all our every day dishes and extra bowls. The bottom one holds some of the pots and pans I use most often.
I store my "good" dishes in an open plate rack cabinet that I designed that is right above the three drawers.
This works great for us-easy to load dirty stuff and everything from the sink, and I don't have to move to unload the dishwasher.

We built pull-out shelves for our dishes. The one is extra deep - so you could call it a drawer. We love it.

We put all of our dishes in base cabinet drawers. To the right of the dishwasher are three drawers...top normal size for silverware, and then 2 deep drawers under it, each holding a complete set of dishes. The drawers are also wide, about 30", so we can get quite a few things in them.

I lined the bottoms with the padded cushy liner (from any HD or home storage store). It works perfectly, that and the weight of the dishes holds them securely so nothing rattles when the drawers are opened or closed. We also have Blumotion on all the drawers, and they are the Blum metal drawers so they can hold up to 100 pounds each.

We have all deep drawers in our base units...no doors at all except for the 2 sink units. We put everything in them, even the pots/pans. I created a baking center on one end of the island with 3 drawers...top drawer has all the rolling pins, measuring cups/spoons, pastry cutters, mixing spoons, etc. Middle deep drawer has all of the bowls, measuring cups, ets. Bottom drawer has all of the flours, sugar, baking powder/soda, all in airtight containers. You never have to run around the kitchen trying to find things when you bake...it's only one trip to the pantry for other supplies.

I'll never go back to doors/shelves again in the lower cabinets. I'm also tall, so having drawers helps my back...I never have to stoop or squat to find things in the back of the shelves.
