Cabinet Update with staining question.
Comments (0)I posted this awhile ago asking about my cabinets. Thank you all for your advice and ideas. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/paint/msg10233732960.html?7 My husband has come to find out that stripping them isn't so bad. Especially considering there are 6 layers of paint on them! :O They seem to be coming off easily. I'd like some good information on staining. In the past I'd thrown on a stain and then poly on the top. I want to make sure we do this correctly. Are there are things I need to do to the wood before finishing it? It looks to be pine. We were thinking of leaving it a natural color. We're afraid staining it a color might bring out more of their imperfections then we'd like. Is their a wood conditioner I need to use one we get them stripped? Shellac, Poly and the rest. What's what and what's best? At our old house we had tons of wood trim that has this extremely slick coating on it. It was so easy to dust and I just loved it. How would I mimic that? We're complete noobs when it comes to this and I really want to make sure to do things correctly. Any advice or links would be fantastic. Comments (1)So you are not talking about the faces having two colors, right? You are planning to leave the outsides natural and stain the insides darker? No reason you can't do that, but it may make the insides seem smaller, like a dark cave. But it would look fine, if that's what you want to do. Sorry...no pictures for you. My cabinets are the opposite....stained dark outside and left natural with clear poly inside. Most cabinets are lighter inside than they are outside, for some reason....See MoreQuestions regarding white inset cabinets
Comments (14)sayde, I think the biggest difference I've noticed is the finish. Crown Point's paint finish, both their classic and milk paint, is gorgeous. I prefer a very matte finish and even with the 10% sheen, the Cabico cabinets seem a little glossier. CP's finishing is done by hand and is very elaborate. Another thing is the detailing. Crown Point's product looks more like furniture to me. For example, the toekicks aren't added on, they're all one piece with the frame. And look at this corbel: As far as quality of construction, for an upcharge I can upgrade to all plywood boxes with Cabico. As far as I can tell Cabico's drawer construction and undermount hardware are of similar quality to CP's. Aside from quality and detail, the other big factor that had me leaning toward Crown Point was that the CP designer is much more in tune with my style. Her kitchens are in my inspiration file, while the other KD's kitchens appear very run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter to me. Good luck with your continuing research!...See MoreQuestion regarding staining or sealing douglas fir beams and ceiling
Comments (17)Virgil, we plan to have drywall throughout the house. Might do paneling for some accent walls. Some of the windows and doors will be vertical grain douglas fir. I was asking if the windows and doors should get the same stain as the ceiling. I suppose the trim should be done in a similar fashion as well. seabornman, leaving the fir natural is definitely an option we want to consider, but I am not sure what is the actual natural color. I have been trying to find some pictures online, but there seems to be quite a bit of variation. If we did the semi transparent stain on the ceiling as Virgil suggested, I am assuming the natural finish on the windows and doors will be lighter....See MoreRelated Professionals
