interesting that so many of us have the crispy edges for the first time thiis year. My garden gets some direct morning sun on the two back corners, and that was enough to fry the edges of a couple out there during that very first super hot spell. After that we've been luckier than most of the country and it hasn't been much above eighty. But I have seen sooooo many fried hosta around town, which is very unusual for us in Maine. I'm interested to see if anyone can answer your question about next year's growth. I would think that as long as there is still some live tissue, it would come back ok next year- maybe the same size or a little smaller? I've always thought they say not to fertilize a stressed plant, so I don't know about that. I would certainly keep up with the watering, though. I took this pic yesterday in a parking lot....I think these are actually BLUE hosta- poor babies! I'm really grateful to have mostly shade after this summer.

Like your desk... it's not one bit "ugly" to me. Sure it looks functional, but that's what it's meant to be (I just happen to like that look anyway LOL). you and Martha Stewart. Once, several years ago, I sw in her office that she had a huge "paper pusher's desk" from the 1950s. Steel office furniture. And she still have a big metal "1950s office furniture"-looking table in her office for meetings. However I'd like to see a workable round table in my FR. But I like the idea of being able to put it away, however putting it away could be a problem...no place to put away. What about an office-type table? Where all the legs fold in, and you can roll the table behind the big wall unit (pull it out from the wall a bit to make room? There are some lightweight ones in the world, and you and DD can make getting it out and putting it away part of the classroom routine. If public-school teachers can have a "salute the flag, sharpen the pencils, take attendance, carry stuff to the office" type routine at the beginning of their day, why can't you have a similar business-like routine? In fact, you would teach her something really valuable by teaching her to set up her stuff for whatever she's doing, and break it back down. Round is nice bcs you can roll it--lifting isn't needed. But since she's 7, you might want one w/ more adjustable legs. I've seen that mostly in rectangular. But the blow-molded plastic tops make them REALLY lightweight. I have a small one in the church nursery, and it only needs two 2-y-o's to carry it ANYWHERE. True, it wouldn't look like fine furniture. But it would look sturdy and functional. and if ever you wanted it to look nicer--well, there are tableclothes (nobody looks at the legs) The FR is strictly for dd to play and watch tv (kinda like she can break her own tv). I bought a couch with white slipcovers when my kids were about 2 and 4, and everyone thought I was nuts. But it was easy to take them off and wash them (just took a couple of loads, because we have a big chair and ottoman too.) They have been spilled on, drooled on (sleeping kids) etc. The only thing that really caused discoloration was yellowing from the sun through the southern exposure windows (now tinted.) Washing and drying them also made them seem to fit nice and tight on the cushions again - kind of spruces up the whole look. We have since replaced them with new slip covers in a chocolate brown, but kept the white ones just in case we want to use them again. That's one great thing about slip covers: you can replace them without replacing the whole couch. They're not cheap, but we purchased through Crate and Barrel, which has a sale every September. So I would just make sure that you can purchase new ones even years from now from the same place where you're getting your couch, just in case you want to.

Just be sure you know what you're getting into with sandstone. It is absolutely gorgeous in my opinion.

It is very pretty. Does it have any maintenance issues to consider? I thought there was a functional reason to be worried, but I could very well be wrong....

Wow, they are all beautiful, but that second pic is stunning the way the grain (for lack of a better word) wraps around the edge.

Good luck. I really hope this works out for you and can't wait to see photos.....

No denying that it is beautiful. What is the texture like? I think of sandstone as "sandy" and rough. Do they put a coating over it to keep it from sluffing off from wear and tear? It would definitely be eye candy if you go with it!

It is sanded, polished and wax sealed. It will never have the smooth high gloss look of granite. And, no, once it is sealed it doesn't have a sandy texture to it. It does have maintenance issues. On another thread I had posted there has been a large discussion on different issues with sandstone. I'll just give a brief run down on what I know-
I've seen sandstone stand up to:
-50 years on the outside of houses
-V8 juice
-alcoholic drinks
-soda
-mustard
-ketchup
-100s of people(per event) at numerous social occasions and dinner parties(yes they put their plates and glasses on it)
-things thrown,slammed and beat on(usually involves turn over or loss in football)
-7 superbowl parties-Anybody that has had or been to one knows how the true pigs in men show their ugly snouts.
-hamburgers just of the grill dumped on it
That's just the fairly bad stuff.
Like any stone, it can be chipped or broken-it's not as hard as granite. It can stain-once it does you can't get it out. It can scratch if something heavy is dragged across it.(it can be sanded out)
I will have to clean spills quickly and keep my kids away with sharpies(they are 16 and 14 so I think that's a nonissue) and wax it every 9-12 months. But for me, to have that beautiful countertop it's worth it.
