We have a drawer unit inside our laundry closet, which is right at the back door where we come into the house. The drawers are the kind that have gaps above them.....drawer modules for wardrobes. Above the drawer we had several power points installed and with 2 surge protector outlets, we can charge about 8 items at a time. The phones, torches, batteries, cameras etc are all in the drawer, with just the cords snaking out the front, up into the power points. It's wonderful, and nothing can get knocked off, because they're all safely in the drawer. It's neat and hidden away, and yet handy. We were lucky though, because we were building a new house, and had the idea for this before we built. Even when our kids come home to visit, they charge their phones and cameras etc in the "charging drawer" and so we don't have a heap of gadgets cluttering up the bench tops. I'm kind of amazed that more companies haven't come up with ideas for charging stations, because it seems like every household has endless gadgets that need to be charged nowadays. Our kitchen is finished with a full backsplash and there will be no further outlets added. Our laundry room (where I want to put the charger) has all open deep shelves and we have no plans to change those for cabinets (we have much more urgent remodeling to do in this house!). If we put in one cabinet just for this it would look very odd. The only open wall space in the room is over the washing machine and laundry tub, about 4 feet wide and 18 inches high. This is where I want to put the charger, right above the washing machine.

Thanks, beagles! You pretty much confirmed my suspicion about a charging drawer. Scratch that idea. MamaRachel, my DH is the same way so while I like the idea of putting charging items behind a door, I wonder how well that will work IRL for us. Crazy as it may sound, I'm tempted to forgo the doored cabinet and leave that lower section open. It would be similar to these hutches: I like the division of 3 spaces below the glass doors. I'd get a simple napkin holder or basket (as shown in the pic above) for bills. lol, I found a pig napkin holder at PB! Pity I don't have a towel pig to go with it. But I kinda think DH would squash the idea of a pig napkin holder. ;-) Anyhoo, in preparation for remodeling the kitchen, we moved the filing sorting trays to the den, which is actually a good place for them to reside permanently since that's where the file drawers are. Maybe I don't need a bunch of cubbies in the kitchen hutch after all. I'd also get a decorative basket to hold items as they charge. That would put them out of sight, MOL, but accessible, a plus if the phone rings. The other option - and I need to wait for our GC to see if it's possible tomorrow - is to add a USB outlet to the 9" deep cab opposite the entry aisle from the hutch and use a shelf in that cab for a charging station. Maybe simple is the way to go. I'll talk to DH tonight and see if we can make up our minds. Thank you, everyone!

Except it was on my radar but I couldn't convince DH. Can't win them all. Being married to to a retired energy engineer, this is the kind of thing my DH loves. You don't want to know how many remotes we own, and -- yes -- he's a Star Trek. It's not just a stereotype. My neighbors are buying EV's and learning that charging is a disorganized wild west. I believe that. Again, that's why Canada is allowing itself 14 years "to get there". I cannot see how this is even remotely feasible for the near future here in the US. Not everyone lives in a nice suburban home with a garage. Don't you think Canadians live in cities and apartments too? I'd assume city dwellers own fewer cars /rely more upon public transportation. You don't have to have a garage to have a charger. My mom has a hybrid, and she has a charger on the side of her no-garage house. A LOT needs to take place before electric cars become law. Agree, but we have no control over whether it becomes law ... the discussion is how to prepare your own house: if, when, what, how? Those are the questions.
