Calling all Tomatoe Gurus - I have room for 3-4 variaties
Comments (19)Cherry would be Black Cherry (hands down!) Early would be Kimberly (nothing personal) Green Zebra would be a priority, not only because of its beautiful colouring, but because of its productivity and its great, unique taste. Then a red or pink beefsteak/slicer - Neves Azorean Red, Red Brandywine, Large Pink Bulgarian - there's tons to choose from - you just have to research their qualities ( DTM, yield, flavour etc.) & pick what you think works for you. If you're planting 6 or 7 plants in that space - I would say one Black Cherry and one Green Zebra is never enough! Plus you could try more than one large pink/red....See MoreCalling all decorating Gurus can I get opinions on mirrors please
Comments (29)Pretend you are arranging pictures. Move the ottoman out and lay the mirrors on the floor in front of the sofa. How do they look: 1.with all 4 touching 2.with all 4, but with 1 or1/2" between them 3.with Only 3 If you find an arrangement you like put them up. Live with them in white and re-do the color later if you want. Addressing the reflection issue, it is preferable to reflect something lovely. If the mirrored buffet/hutch doesn't work for you, could it be moved ... Oh I can hear DH groaning from here:>)...to a side wall( fit??), and replaced with a long table or chest/console. Then you could have a big, bright painting over that, with lamp and greenery, perhaps, to be reflected in your new "windows". I'm thinking, however, that that's asking a lot and expect your sofa wall is far enough away from the D.R. hutch that it will be fine. One last thought...do not keep them if you are going to end up beating yourself up over your mistake. been there, done that, no fun!...See MoreKitchen Layout Gurus--Please take a look at my plan
Comments (51)Hi everyone. I've been trying to get paying work done (I freelance), but I've had more ideas bouncing around my head. I'm liking what we all came up with for the island/table configuration. But, I really want to move the wall. I think it just opens up many options for the kitchen. I talked to the engineer today and am setting up an appt for him to evaluate next week. I also talked to a framer that a full-service firm who didn't want my small job referred me to. He does nothing but framing for builders and remodelers. He told me "realistically anywhere from $1500 to $3k" and he knows about pouring new footers if needed and building temp support walls on all 3 floors while the new support is being built. IF it is under $5k altogether to move the walls, then I'll do it. Our cabinets will come in at under $5k, so I figure for the $10k lots of folks in our neighborhood spend on cabinets at Home Depot, I'm getting the layout I really want. So here is my latest plan (number 472 I think ;-) Janet--I got you some landing space for the ovens! Which is now also a beverage center outside the main work space, so I think that is good placement for kids to grab something and for adults at parties. All my wine glasses can go in the cab above. The micro is there as well. The micro might be better inside my L space, but this way, it's pretty convenient to getting heated stuff to the table. And we use it mostly for steaming veggies or heating up leftovers, so things usually go from micro to table. Plus there is more storage space with that unit. I appreciate the feedback on the corner, but I like this cabinet versus the 36" lazy Susan (which I think should be renamed the "go-getter Susan" ;-). I don't like the piano hinge door on the Susan cab--I can see my kids banging it around and scratching up the cabinets around it will get banged up too. That IKEA corner unit has a door and it is just two half moon shelves that swing out. It may not hold as much, but I found it pretty handy to use. Plus, it gives me a drawer right there by the cooktop which the Susan doesn't have. Another thing I realized is that the DR door shouldn't be centered on the wall--it needs to stay near where it is now. Even though I think it looks more aesthetically pleasing to be centered, that door is a direct pathway into the kitchen and we don't need to be maneuvering around the dining room table. LavenderLass--you may have missed this in my earlier verbose posts, but I already have most of the appliances in the basement. They were a great deal from a fancy appliance store that went out of business. So, it's putting the cart before the horse, but I'm trying to work it all in. Thank you for helping me out on the window--I'm definitely going to find out the costs on that one. It would look much more upscale. I'll check in after I've met with the engineer and get more precise bids on the wall. Keep your fingers crossed. Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and suggestions so far. Comments (27)This is me, again feeling anxious and bummed :( !! We just spent $4k moving the water htr, & W/D down so we could put a door into the den for access to laundry. I thought about putting it in the den area inside. It would have made more sense. But was in doubt because of the entry to the den is in the LR. you can see better what I mean in the pic. Now though, after all this $ spent, the den is no longer a room to flop because there is no where to put any furniture w/out congesting an entry! Ergggggg. Would have made sense to do what you suggested and made it a laundry/mudroom. This is why I am pleading for suggestions for the other areas (LR/kitchen/add-on) because I do not want an even larger costly mistake! I am beginning to hate this house and feel very guilty about that (could be a whole different blog). I REALLY would like to fix it to sell, but DH sees it totally differently and not a fan of change (another blog) ...so, moving is out. Its just that this plan has always been so hard for me to live in and almost 22yrs later- I am the closest I have ever been to changing it. I just cannot, for the life of me, find a plan (yet) that I am happy with! The biggest prob is the main door entry. It is in a terribly awkward place and cannot be moved because of the way the driveway is. I am torn btwn living w/the entry/LR as is, and refocusing on the kitchen, adding-on to the back. I am riddled w/angst, this project has been on my mind for 22yrs and now is beginning to consume most of daily life! I wish it were easier, I want to have the joy I used to in the first few yrs looking forward to making it better. Now is seems, that the "thrill is (just about) gone" and I am not a happy camper. DH says, "ya- if we had all the $ we wanted, we could do what we want to the house" - dont' we all wish? I have tried the Sweeby test. made me more angst about the floor plan. Thanks for listening. . . ....See MoreGauchoGordo1993
