Cardboard about to come off_ how do I protect Tigerwood floors?

Hey,

It may actually happen soon. I started putting a few dishes in cupboards, and if the granite gets temporarily installed (see my previous post "5 granite pieces- 3 run one way, 2 run the other" for details), this week, then I can ...remove the cardboard and ta da... reveal the Tigerwood floors.

But I suddenly realized, I don't have protection under my chairs and table (I do under the China cabinet- but I can't move stuff into there until I've put up the baseboards...) So, what have you used on the bottom of chairs? I'm just thinking that the felt that I glued on to the china cabinet legs may not be good enough for chairs that will be constantly moved back and forth_ I can envision the felt wearing off... I feel like I'm bringing the baby home from the hospital, and I have no crib... crazy- huh?

Felt is okay....also you can get little silicone(?) feet that slide extremely well.

Tigerwood is gorgeous! Can't wait to see pics.

Or either leave the cardboard on or don't let anyone use the table or chairs or walk on the floor - I vote for the silicone things - they have them all over - I've seen them at Target. We haven't done our floors yet so we don't care.

Using cardboard under developing fruits won't hurt anything and is better than nothing. Just keep in mind that eventually with sun and rain it will deteriorate, and your vegetables will be sitting in either soil or dampness, prey for slugs and other insects as they'd be on the bare earth. I have often used scrap blocks of wood or even upside down styrofoam plates to keep them elevated, dry, and away from the soil. Flat rocks would also do it. Old saucers or plastic containers turned upside down (so the rain runs off them) would work, too. You can probably think of something more permanent and more attractive if that's a concern that would do the trick!

We just did our kitchen floor and thats exactly what was on our floor! UGH,huh? Well, I'm no expert, but this is how I got it off. Bioling water. First I tried microwaving water (no oven-kitchen remodel) in a pyrex measuring cup but this took too long.....so then I bought a cheap coffee maker and kept it running while I worked. Pour a small amount of water on a 2ft x 2ft section and use a 1 1/2 in metal scraper. I let the water soak in for a few minutes and it came up in strips. I also sacrificed a rag mop head and mopped up any "slime" leftover. On the really tough spots, I dropped a few drops of lemon Dawn dish soap on the water. Don't leave the water sit for too long though (more than 10-15 minutes)...I did in one spot (luckily in a spot under a cabinet) and it left a mark. If you want your sofa to remain stationary, don't use felt pads or it will scoot across the floor when you sit on it. I use felt pads on dining chairs and occasional tables, and on very heavy pieces (like TV cabinets) that won't move with casual contact. But be aware, you need to keep them clean or they will hold grit and act like sandpaper. Furniture "cups" come in square and round, in many sizes, in brown and tan and clear and wood. I have them under anything with legs or casters. They are also available with "teeth" for use on rugs. I bought most of my furniture protectors at Home Depot.

I nonce bought a 'new' gallon of floor finish at Home Depot---turns out it was THREE years over the shelf life! Imagine my state of mind 12 hours after application when I went to apply the third coat and the stuff had not set at all---was still gooey. Did you clean off the excess stain before applying the poly? Your problem is the poly is not adhering---adding something more does not solve that problem. To solve the problem, you will most likely have to remove all(most) of the problem poly. Then sand with 150 grit (hand sanding) to just rough the surfaces. The clean the surfaces with a rag dampened with paint thinner. Then go to a real paint store and buy enough varnish---NON poly varnish---and apply several coats according to the manufacturers directions.

I'm interested in the silicone feet you mentioned, but when I googled it my search produced nothing useful. Can anyone tell me the exact name or more specific info? Thanks!

Here's one kind (quoted from a website):

"FOREVER GLIDES slide easily and protect floors such as hardwood, linoleum, ceramic tile, carpet, brick, decks, concrete and more.

Too funny_ but kinda sad too cuz it's actually closer to the truth than I care to admit. My original vision , or 'the sweeby test', was to have my home comfortable enough to walk in off the deck and the hot tub, and not have to worry. But, of course, then I got the Tigerwood, cuz no other hardwood 'spoke' to me like it did, and I am sort of feeling like a mother hen. But then I haven't really lived with it yet, so it may not take long, before I let the little chicks leave the coop!

And I really don't want big gouges or scrapes in my floor. Just wondering what others have used and found effective. I actually saw a package of felt pads and I think the silicone ones too at Office Depot for those that are looking. Flooring and molding supply places carry them too.

I wouldn't recommend any of those "glide" type pads. They may work well on carpet b/c they need an absence of friction to glide. I tried them for my table and chairs on my wood floor, and as soon as there was any kind of grit on the floor (ordinary house dust, grains of dirt), they scratched the floor. I am a clean freak, and I vacuum everyday. But even doing that, I couldn't keep a wood floor friction-free. The "glides" scratched the floor every day! Argh! I took them off a few days later, and put on those thick felt pads. I change the pads about once a month (maybe every 2 months).

And remember: one scratch makes a floor look bad. But 500 scratches makes a floor look lived on and loved!

That's what I wanted, to hear from someone who has had success and unfortunately, failures. DH put a big gouge in the floor using the teflon pads that came with the DW. There was a tiny burr on one of the pads and.... He ended up replacing them with store-bought ones.

guess I have that to look forward to... that lived-in look!
