the contract just talks about the depost for the cabinets and then the 50% due upon receipt of the cabinets. I've paid the KD her fee.. (and she really deserves it.. she really did a lot of work for us and came up with some excellent solutions for us). Mostly it's the deposit for the cabinets... which hasn't been sent to the cabinet company yet.. the order was pending my approval for the door... which I do not want to approve. what i'd like to do is get my money back and then give the KD a bit extra (she said initially that if we did not get the cabinets through her, after the designs were done, she'd charge an hourly rate for consultation, changes, etc.. she's spent a ton of time on us and her initial fee was low.. so, I thought I'd calculate the 'extra' hours, figure out what else we owe her, and then get the rest of the refund.. at that point I'd go to Crown Point, which was our orignal plan until we got spooked by ordering out of town.

I try to order a full sample for every job, gratis, but we keep it. That's an industry standard though. It was difficult to arrange at my old job. Some clients end up needing multiples in which case that gets added to the bill. Time varies by mfg. In one brand I can be an express sample shipped within ten business days Those are always the same style though so only useful for color. A regular sample from them is 4 weeks. Others are from 3 to six. Cost also can vary enormously. One brand had a new style I was interested in but a full drawer/door sample was going for cost me $375. A shorter door only would have been more reasonable but I felt the whole package was needed for the style so I passed for now. I have one brand that automatically creates an order for a "color control" sample door as soon as I submit an order, if I had not already gotten one. That MUST be signed off on before they will finish production.

Sorry this happened. It can be frustrating to expect this and wind up with that. I agree with MagE Eric replace them as you need to like your counters.. Years ago I was having our soon to be new home painted. We were not living in the house so had work done prior to our relocation. I thought I had chosen a warm beige cream paint but when I went to check on the job site it turned out to be a glowy warm peach pink color. I was horrified! My DH told me to think long and hard about spending more money to re-paint all of it. I had chosen the color this was not the mistake of the GC or the painter. The paint choice was all mine. I was on a budget and decided to accept my walls. I cried on the way home but accepted I had to live with the choice I made. Maybe down the road I would repaint them. Months later I started to like that color. And little by little I fell in love with the color. It went perfectly in my home. My furniture, rugs, window coverings etc.. all went really great with this warm peachy beige. When I went to sell the house the new owners wanted to know the name and color of the paint as they loved the color. It doesn't matter if this is Mont Granite's fault or anyone's fault what matters is are you going to be happy? Are you going to be happy spending the money to replace or happy accepting the situation you are in? You need to make your kitchen and your space wonderful for yourself. HOnestly, if I had the money years ago I would have repainted the entire house. ~boxer
