Accuride vs Blum soft-close glides--help asap
Comments (14)We are not providing the glides, the furniture maker is. If we specify that we want Blumotion glides, he will get them for us (though, as I mentioned above, his guys aren't used to installing them). Our only experience with soft/self closing drawers has pretty much only been with Blum. When our kitchen cabs were delivered, we'd noticed that some of the glides were Blum, and some were KV's (Knape and Vogt), even though Blumotion glides had been specified in our contract with our KD. As I recall, we did notice a difference between the two brands when playing around with them (I don't remember if they just felt different, or if it was that the KV's were noisier, or the Blums operated more smoothly, but we definitely preferred the Blumotion glides). All incorrect glides were replaced during our install with Blum without a hassle, BTW. We have had a few drawers stop just short of closing fully on occasion, but eventually it clears up on its own (which leads me to think it's dust or debris on the glide itself, as mentioned on that thread you linked caryscott). Otherwise, we're happy with the way they work, which is why we requested soft/self closing glides in our buffet. The only thing our guy told us about the Accuride glides (besides more sizing options with them, which isn't an issue given the sizes of our pull-outs) is that initially there is some resistant when pulling open a drawer (FWIW, we don't seem to notice much resistance with our Blumotion drawers and pull-outs; don't know if what he is describing would be anything more than that) . He thinks that all of these German-engineered/manuf glides are pretty much the same, just that Blum has a more widely recognized name. We might be leaning towards Blum, especially since its what we are familiar with, just hate the thought that his guys might have difficulty installing them (thereby causing problems from the start or at some point down the road). pharaoh, have you any trouble installing Blumotion glides, or would you say they are any more or less difficult to install than Accuride?...See MoreBlum soft close with inset doors?
Comments (12)Jaymie, I know what you mean about the waiting. Sometimes I think it was even harder for me with my DH so close by in the garage. I love the smell of sawdust from wood projects (my dad was a cabinet maker) so I was always checking to see what he was doing and if I could help - you know, speed things along. ; ) I'll be looking forward to seeing your cabs, too! Thank you, remodelqueen and pluckymama (cute name!). I am really proud of what we have accomplished. Now to finish it! It's actually been 95% done and functional for some time but we switched the fridge location which left a 5 ft. space for a nice built-in hutch. So it was back to the lumber yard. Bet you can guess my DH didn't mind that one bit. ; ) Here's a pic of the hinges. They're from Horton Brass, satin nickel. Really nice quality. They don't take up much room at all. We also don't notice any loss of space from the insets. I think if you're really tight on space it might matter but storage needs can be met with them, especially if you're not a collector of every gadget or don't need three of everything. HTH! Comments (14)I'm back...happy to report nothing disintegrated in my hands, no stripped screws, etc. :) Really rather fascinating how that little mechanism works! There's plenty of extra clearance for the door to swing, corner unimpeded; so, not sure what the reason is for that large a gap. It's not so much the discrepancy in the gaps between the hinge side and the door bumper side (so, I'll just stick with the little nubby that's already there). Is this how all new cabinets are? Seems "Blum" is the in thing these days, so I'd imagine lots of folks are wrestling with this -- or maybe it's just us 'partial overlay' people. I don't imagine those who order inset cabinets have this issue. Thanks again for all the help. Now, moving on to whether I want to risk drilling new holes because the installers set my oversized drawer pull too high! :/...See MoreCan I make these hinges soft-close?
Comments (7)You can replace the hinges no problem. Blummotion is excellent hardware. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR4.TRC1.A0.H0.Xsoft+close+hinges.TRS0&_nkw=soft+close+hinges&_sacat=0 A search on Ebay will show you a selection of hardware options. You can take a hinge to your local hardware store and they may be able to help as well....See Morealiris19
