Farmhouse Sink Problem

Hi everyone!

I'm so glad I found this site! It's been very helpful - but I have a problem I'm struggling with.

We have a very tiny kitchen, and are replacing the bottom kitchen cabinets. We have 102" to work with, and an 18" dishwasher will be installed there as well. However, it's the sink that is driving me crazy!

We have a 22"x 16" farmhouse - apron - sink. It seems every cabinet we find that we like they only carry sink bases 30" and up. We would like to install the 22" apron sink. Any ideas on what we can do? Are there are sink bases 24" - manufacturers we haven't come across yet? We live in a rural area without many options to shop in.

What kind of cabinets are you going with? If semi-custom (ie Medallion, Kraftmaid...etc) you can do a couple of things. This would be VERY difficult to do with stock grade cabinets.

1.order an over refrigerator wall cabinet with modifications (modify width and height to fit your sink). Set sink on top of it. Then apply 1" to 3" columns on both ends to enclose it.

2. Order a farm sink base and modify width.

Here are elevations of both examples above. Hope this helps.

One other tip: You will need to find a cabinet line that will at least do modified width. Medallion does it all: modify width, depth and height. A cabinet line like this is what you need to look for.

But i think it would be easier if we could find a 24" farmhouse sink base - and so far, we can't.

This is a good idea, using a refrigerator cabinet - never thought of that!

Yes, I realize that. I meant here on the Houzz site - or perhaps on the IKEA Hacker's site. It would be great to see exactly how to adjust the non-apron sink cabinet to fit an apron sink. We have to do it nonetheless, so I might take pictures and post if I can't find anything else. Our sink is not as heavy as the 30" sink inserted into into a 30" cabinet, so the framing requirements should not be as stringent. Plus, the methodology there was to combine two cabinets together.

good luck Missi. I would address the spots quickly. I see that the new ones that appear come off rather easily with a lemon and baking soda followed by a microfiber cloth. I went back over the heavier marks with barkeepers friend and microfiber and many of them came up... I'd be careful with barkeepers friend, though, as it did remove my finish on a few spots -- I may have wet the cloth too much with it. But I would also try the cleaner vinmark suggested. I feel a lot better knowing I can change that sink out if I find the right person to do it so I'm not as upset as I was before. I had a Franke, Dawn and Kohler -- this is all new to me. Never again with Amazon or overstock for me on anything I need to last. My lesson learned.

Farm house sinks/single sink...are they cast iron or porcelain?

Kohler makes cast iron farmhouse sinks. They are more durable than fireclay. There are also stainless steel and copper farmhouse sinks. Or soapstone. Any of the web based stores like efaucets or faucetsdirect will have the cast iron, fireclay or stainless farmhouse sinks. Even amazon and overstock likely have some. For copper you might have to hunt more--just google. Soapstone is usually made custom by a stone fabricator, though you can buy them off the self too from a couple of places. IKEA sells a fireclay one which is a great deal price wise. They used have both a single and a double, but I think the single may have had some supply chain problems and I'm not sure if it is still available.

Most farmhouse sinks require a special cabinet with shortened doors like in the picture above. If you have the special sink base cabinet - no problem. For remodels that are keeping the cabinets like I did, Kohler makes two apron front sinks in a "short apron" style which can be installed on a standard sink base. The shorter apron does not interfere with the doors on a standard cabinet sink base. Mine is in my "my pics" idea book. If you are using your old cabinets, make sure you ordered the "short apron" style of the Whitehaven. If you are getting new cabinets and specified a sink base for a farmhouse sink, order the standard Whitehaven which has the longer apron front - I think 9 inches rather than the short apron which is 7 inches. (I think those are the dimensions.)

None of my cabinet lines offer a 24" wide farmhouse sink base cabinet. Most offer 30" wide minimum.....so you order it to size at 24" wide. The factory will modify and built it at 24" wide. It's the same as if a manufacturer offered a 24" wide as standard...you just pay a little to have it custom sized.
