I ruined part of my marble counter--what do I do?

I noticed my husband got shaving cream on our black marble counter. I couldn't get it off with a wet sponge and, very stupidly, used the scrubbing side of the sponge and turned the marble in those areas a whitish gray and left scratch marks as well. What on earth do I do to turn this area black and make the fine sandpaper like scratches disappear? thanks.

A fabricator can probably polish it up. You might be able to as well...

I am a fabricator.

any competent fabricator can repair the damaged area. would probably take a skilled guy an hour or so (longer if the scratches are deep.) The repaired area will reflect light a bit differently from some angles because the repaired area will be slightly dished due to the material removal required to eliminate the scratches.

You may be able to save part of the cost if you tell the fabricator he can do it when he's "in the neighborhood."

HI Karezz! Good advice from the two posters. >>> If you haven't already done so...use stripping solution to remove all residual paste. Then, a couple clean-water rinses, and a day to dry. * The water in your primer is reactivating the paste and gelling with it. * Feather-sand the edges of your dried primer so there's no "edge" anymore. *Because it's a RED color, use a gray-tinted primer. In this case, try to find: >>> Gaardz, by Zinsser. Have it tinted with Black, up to the limit of 2 oz./gallon I believe. Check on can though! >>> BIN primer by Zinsser. Smelly, but very effective at blocking glue bleed-through. Tint this with black colorant too...check the limit. >>> 123-Latex primer by Zinsser. Have this tinted with 2 oz. of Black per gallon. I have nothing more to offer regarding "how" to clean the mess, but definitely have a recommendation for "who" should actually be putting the elbow grease into the project. The offending son absolutely should be the person doing the cleanup and, if the pan can't be salvaged, he should purchase a new one from his own money. That being said, I'm in a never-ending training mode when it comes to keeping my husband from ruining my non-stick frypans. You would think that paying for new ones would help reinforce the "use plastic utensils" rule.

We stay in a very old hotel in Rome that has cararra marble everywhere in the bathroom and it has been there since 1947 there is no discoloration anywhere, not in the shower or the walls so maybe check with Italy they have been using this stone for a very long time.

climbing rose help....did I ruin my rose?

I have never heard of cutting back a bare root rose at planting unless there is some dead cane to be removed. Pruning of any kind always stimulates TOP growth, not the roots. You can leave all the hips on you want. The rose will not go dormant. It will continue to put out growth until the weather stops it. I've left hips on from the spring flush in June and the rose continued to grow and bloom right through until October. New Dawn is such a growth monster that I can't see any purpose in disbudding it. The roots are growing, count on it! Roses, climbers in particular, will not send up more cane than their root system can sustain. Hence the saying for climbers, first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. Those first few years that it seems to not be doing anything it is in fact building a big enough root ball to be able to push nutrients up those long canes you're waiting for. Once it feels it has sufficient roots to do that it will begin to climb.

The counter is honed. Does that make a difference? I have a friend who owns a marble polishing company. I'm so annoyed with myself--I know better. :(

Black marble probably nero marquina is very soft and all you did was slightly abrade the surface.
A fabricator or stone refinisher can repair it back to factory finish whether honed or polished. Honed makes the repair easier. Cali your friend the marble polisher and he will have you fixed up in no time.
If it makes you feel any better we get these calls often.
