Rift cut white oak cabinets

I had seen some rift cut white oak cabinets that I really liked, in a contemporary slab door style. I am going to install a more shaker style door, and was wondering if anybody had used this wood for something similar.

I have not seen many folks on this forum with rift cut or quarter sawn white oak cabinets. Is there a reason for this that I am unaware of?

I have quartersawn white oak in a shaker style - links to photos on my page. There are quite a few of us who have these - though other things are definitely more popular - that's one of the reasons I chose QS oak. I also think there are probably quite a few cabinet mfgs that don't offer it.

I have quarter-sawn white oak in a slab door. I had trouble finding companies that offered it as a choice, and my custom cabinet maker expressed surprised when I requested it. It's not very popular. Perhaps that's because not many people are aware of it? I love it.

Try General Finishes High Performance Topcoat. I'm experimenting with it on red oak. It very much preserves the natural color of the wood. So much so that I'm wondering how to enhance the grain just a wee bit before I topcoat w/ it. No yellowing (on red oak) whatsoever. General Finishes contact phone # 800-783-8050. They're located in Wisconsin so Central Time Zone. I've called them before & will give them another call for suggestions on slightly enhancing the grain of red oak. It's available in satin, semi-gloss and gloss. McFeeley's has the best price that I've found. McFeeley's Oh, the stuff is super easy to apply. (I'm using a foam brush but it's sposed to spray nicely, too.) The only complaints that I've read about it is that it maybe dries too fast. I did a finish on white oak once and it looked very similar to that 5% white. I honestly can't remember what I used but the sample on that website looks like what I did. I then clear coated over it. I like the fact that it is an all in one finish and you don't have to clear coat. Maybe if you got some damage down the road you could light sand and apply some more. I think some call this this technique liming oak rather than whitewash not sure though. Your kitchen will look really great with what you are planning.

You're not the only one. All white would "grind my gears". I'm not a compulsive "clean freak" but white would show every bit of dust/dirt ... and I live on a country dirt road off another private country dirt road. Weather permitting, I keep my windows open from early spring to late fall because I go outside too often to want to be changing temp from ambient temp to AC and back again. To me, that makes hot weather seem even more hot . If you are wanting to reuse your current cabinets, you might consider researching products that would darken your stained cabinets a bit to get rid of any "orange" vibe -- that would be my first choice. Is there a cabinet, upper and /or lower, that is installed apart from the others -- one from which you could remove the door(s) and see if it might be either stained darker or refinished? Or do you have cabinets above the refrigerator that could be removed and replaced with an open shelf if what you try doesn't result in something you like?

The first issue is actually NOT the floor. Your inspo is probably a factory created cabinet. By nature a more consistent finish ......call this current "internet lust" and much more difficult to achieve in a local cabinet shop. Far more difficult, where pieces and parts may indeed take stain differently. I'd be very certain, with a LOT of sampling testing from that shop, well in advance - before I tackled the flooring selection. mriordss - I didn't know about rift sawn until we set out on our remodel - LOVELY - We ended up w/mahogany but rift sawn & qtr sawn oak were in the running

I think the biggest reasons you don't find many example kitchens with QS white oak or rift sawn white oak, are 1) very few cabinet companies offer it, not that many even offer white oak at all. 2) Since its not generally available, most people don't even know that it is an option.

I think it can be quite beautiful. I went with quarter-sawn red oak ordered from Scherr's custom cabinets. I'm pretty sure that they also make cabinets from white oak. (I believe they also charge more for white oak.)

Thanks for the replies - my cabinet maker needs to order the wood on Monday and I wanted to be sure I wasn't installing something really strange! I love the look, and everyone's photos confirm it.

Another cab co that uses oak in this way is Plato Woodwork - if they're available in your area, check them out - their craftsmenship is amazing and their selections beautiful, ranging from the typical to quite unique.
