Comments (5)I'm searching for a mid priced cabinet line.Thought Diamond was it, but didn't like the depth of base cabinet draws, nor did I like their top corner cabinet options. Looking through these forums I found this thread. Not sure if Dynasty "melamine" is better or worse than a standard interior wood veneer. Kraftmaid has the depth of draw, corner cabinets, door style I like, but has not been spoken of very fondly by some who have had them from Lowe's/Home Depot. Help! What to buy, what to buy. When looking on the Omega site they have this regarding the cabinet construction: Quality Inside Out Dynasty/Omega's solid wood case construction makes your cabinetry ready for a lifetime of use. But you don't have to wait a lifetime to appreciate it. Dynasty/Omega cabinets are delivered square, stable and easy to install because we start with solid, kiln-dried select hardwood frames. Unlike many cabinet manufacturers, we produce every door (even our curved doors) on site allowing us to apply the same rigorous quality standards to the doors as we give to the rest of the product....See MoreOmega Dynasty vs Dynasty II Doors...and...wood vs wood veneer
Comments (9)Thanks everyone! I think the $7,000 difference also covered a few other changes we made...but some added some subtracted. However, the majority of it comes from the door change. I think about $1,000 came from postponing the 3 decorative doors on the side of the peninsula facing the DR + furniture base. By eliminating one of the single wall ovens (was going to be undercounter) and moving a MW drawer there, we actually added to the cost (~300) of that cabinet since it will now have at least one drawer + the MW. We also eliminated the breadbox (~400 savings there). Lastly, we postponed the Message Center on the end of the Pantry (~1,300). Over the next few years we plan to add the "postponed" items. One of the additional things we did to whittle away at the cost was to eliminate the backsplash. I've noticed that quite a few people put off the backsplash until later and, from what I've read here, it should be relatively easy to add later. I'm trusting all of you on that! Maybe I'll even try my hand at DIYing it (scares me though!) With the door & other cabinet changes made, postponing the backsplash, downgrading our appliances, and postponing other things (Vinnata faucet, new toilet, 2nd GD), we've managed to bring the cost down to something we think we can swing w/o going into debt...that's our goal, financially! Who knows...in a few years if I still want the Artesia door I can always buy them and replace the current doors! (After we "add back' the postponed items!) Again, thanks everyone for helping me feel better about this whole ordeal!...See MoreGot quoted for Diamond cabinets, not Dynasty/Omega.....questions
Comments (18)Hi Rebecca, I just want to say I am not here to sway your decision in any way from one cabinet line to another, I will just pass on what I know about the two, and let you decide what is best for you. As snookums pointed out "Customer's house and money. The decisions are theirs only". Short answer is yes, you can finish the ends and back to match your cabinetry. First off, if you decide to pursue the idea of Diamond, make sure your KD is quoting you Diamond Distinctions, in APC (all plywood construction) and not Diamond Vibes, as someone else mentioned. The APC replaces standard cabinet construction with unfinished 1/2â³ plywood ends, top, bottom, and 3/8â³ back. Upgrades shelves to 3/4â³ finished plywood. 5% Up-charge(I consider this a no brainier, and my customers almost always want the APC) This will give you the same box construction as the higher end cabinet line. Finished ends are accomplished several ways. 1- Finished Ends Creates a matching finished 1/2â³ plywood exterior end. 2-Furniture Finished Plywood Ends Replaces standard cabinet ends with 3/4â³ finished end panels to achieve a Furniture End appearance. 3-Authentic Ends Modifies cabinet end panel with applied decorative door. I use this one the most. Sounds like what you were looking for. 4- Face Frame and Door on End Creates a working door on the end of the specified cabinet. Finishing the backs of islands is one place the two cabinet lines are going to differ, the higher end offers face frame, and matching door panels by the SF built to any configuration and size. The Diamonds don't, but can be done by applying a matching cabinet skin and moldings, then apply what we refer to as "loose doors" . This is one of those many details that needs to be well planned, so as to order the correct size "loose doors"as well as the right skin and moldings. Hope this helps Wayne...See MoreOmega vs Dura Supreme - and glide doors?
Comments (21)Thanks, jdesign, for trying to talk me through how this gliding system works. Thankfully, one of the two companies who offer Omega just put up a display of the doors in their store this week! So, I get to go in and see them for myself! Honu, I'm glad you found the thread again. It would be great to see your cabinets, when it is a good time for you. I finally got my initial quotes back from Durasupreme and Omega. I'm still in the process of trying to ensure they followed my list so I can compare apples to apples. I'm relieved with both quotes, which I guess is the consolation prize of a small kitchen. I didn't hold back much on the bells and whistles, so these numbers supposedly include thin end cabinets on both the fridge and the peninsula sides of the U for small pantry space, framing in the fridge, garbage pullout, microwave drawer, super susan, some drawer stacks, etc. The estimates also include costs for basic crown, light rail and toe kick. I asked to have them priced out in white shaker. Both cabinet lines are the frameless lines. They offer 3/4" plywood boxes, dovetail drawers, soft-close, full extension. Durasupreme Alectra came in at $17,528, discounted $800+ for a sale and another $800 if I pay cash - for a total then of $15,819. Shipping included. There was a $1700 up-charge for the bamboo on the lowers and fridge cabinet/pantry included. Omega's Full Access quote came in at $13,478, including shipping. It says on the quote that this is a 50% discount... It would add a little over 2K to change the uppers to the gliding door system. Bamboo and wenge would be a 50% uncharge (ouch). I'm getting a second quote from this line from another company today. The good news is that these numbers make both lines affordable for me. And, really, fairly comparable. The bad news is that I still can't find finishes in ANY line at ANY price point that I really like. I do love the Omega Metro door. That's about it, so far. It's really sad. I know stained cabinets would hold up better and slab is more cleanable and I like the IDEA of stained/wood/bamboo/wenge lowers and white uppers. But, I don't really want slab doors on the tops. I don't want dark and I don't want super grainy/busy and I don't think my house can handle heavy. The house would like light woods, but I am just not a fan of maples, firs, oaks, cherries, pines, etc. I went into this adamantly against yellow, gold, orange or red tones. Now, I am considering bamboo, but DuraSupreme's reads pretty orange/yellow and Omega's are muted but a 50% uncharge! One thing that I haven't considered, but maybe I should, is rift oak. Maybe I could live with that? Bottom line, I think I'm really a painted cabinet girl, trying to shove herself into a wood cabinet box SOMEHOW. And, all of that is probably for another thread......See Morejoaniepoanie
