Granite in finished lower level kitchenette?

What are your thoughts on putting granite in a kitchenette that we are planning on adding to our finished lower level? Our kids are still young but we want a space for them to hang out w/friends when they are older (as opposed to roaming malls, etc) and it could also potentially serve as an in-law suite (as we are also adding a BR and bath). We will not be putting a cooktop down there, just micro, sink, refrigerator. We will probably have about an 8' run of counter. We got a quote from our granite yard (whom we purchased from when we did our kitchen this summer) and for the same slab we used there they are quoting about $2200 for all, including the undermount SS sink. Does this seem expensive to anyone? Do you think it's worth it to put granite down there? Our contractor says he's seen some beautiful laminates at a fraction of the cost, but we worry about durability if the kids are let loose down there. We don't want to spend a ton on this project, but we don't want any regrets either. Thoughts?

Thanks!
