Need recommendations on a slide in electric (non induction) range

My parents have a beach condo which caught fire Friday morning. Thankfully they were not there but their downstairs neighbor was. The fire was put out but there were some casualties, including their recently purchased Kenmore Elite range.

They are looking for a new range, smooth top (not induction - don't want to buy new cookware) that is dependable and that has an oven that heats quickly. The Kenmore was a disaster in that regard - it took forever to heat up and you would have to come in much earlier than you wanted to from the beach to turn it on . . . My mom really hated it so she is glad to see it go.

A few requirements:

1. must be electric smooth top

2. must be stainless steel

3. must be self cleaning

Other than that, all recommendations welcome. A fast oven preheat is a big bonus. The oven they are replacing had a warming drawer which they never used and do not need. They don't cook too much when they are there but need something that can bake lasagna and chicken breasts and heat french bread :)

I am attaching a link to the oven they had below. The biggest problem was the preheat time - which was FOREVER.

As far as price range goes, I would think around 2k or perhaps a little more. These are close to 70 year old non chefs and a second home so nothing elaborate is needed :)

Hi, so good to hear no one was hurt! How scary!

Anyhow, I can't answer exactly as to the question you asked, but I do have a slide in (gas though) by Frigidaire (which is a division of Electrolux I think), with electric oven, and I just can't get over how fast the oven pre-heats. I have to change my normal procedure of turning oven on as I prepare meals, and have to turn it on much later. It is also convection, which I also like.

Also, do your parents have a toaster oven? As empty nesters, we use ours way more than the actual oven, and I've converted my Mom too.

If it helps you, here are the stainless steel, radiant slide-in ranges tested by Consumer Reports:

Unfortunately they do not measure preheat time. I have an older GE radiant slide-in, and it preheats very quickly.

I am looking at the two Bosch slide-ins for my new house. They weren't tested, but they have gotten very good reviews.

Honestly I'm overwhelmed by the entire process of renovating. Neither my husband nor I have any skills in this area, and we are finding the hundreds of "small" decisions we must make are suffocating at times. We know it will be worth it in the end, and some days are better than others! This week has been hard. No, I did not know that Lowe's would price match AJ Madison. That's awesome. Thanks! I have had a gas range for 10 years and love it. HOWEVER, our new house does not have natural gas on the property and getting it there is about $2,000. Since we don't need it for anything else, that lead me to consider induction. I have seen the demonstration, viewed it at a friend's house, and spent hours reading the pros & cons. I'm actually really excited about it and think it will be great. Not to mention our summers here are ferocious and I would love to put less heat into the kitchen. I just wish there were more options to choose from! laat2--I think you hit the nail on the head. I didn't fully realize the "niche" idea until you said it, so thanks. I have read your thread, and the slow pre-heat time on the oven is one of the reasons I was looking for another option. I use the oven frequently, and love that my currently one is hot in just a couple of minutes. I guess I was really hoping for a new option that I hadn't discovered on my own! If the OP is asking regular electric vs. induction I vote for induction. Since getting my induction cooktop I have gotten rid of my slow cooker, egg steamer, rice cooker, plug in teapot, and many other no-longer-needed compensatory items that I was using because my electric cooktop was so pitifully slow. I put any non-magnetic pots into the "first apartment boxes" for my kids, and I only needed to buy 3 pieces of cookware. I don't even use my microwave anymore bc my induction cooktop is faster. As far as the paper towel discussion goes. I have cooked greasy stuff on top of paper towels, but not left them lingering. The clean up is easy. If I've got something on the stove that the little kids have to serve themselves when I'm not home yet, I leave it on low with a dishtowel underneath. That way if they spill, clean up will be easier later. The other day I made a small portion of mini bowtie pasta for my little niece. Granted, it was a small amount of water, but it was at a full boil in 23 seconds. I think that's amazing.

You may think that's the worst of it. But wait there's more. You can clean up the induction cook surface with a microfiber cloth and some glass cleaner in one quick wipe and be out in the sunshine. For ceran everything is baked and ground into the surface in a deposition of mineral residue. This stuff is always there unless you want to spend a lot of vacation time removing it. The best stuff is Cif from the UK and or single edged razor blades. Like going through an oven cleaning every day to be redone the next day and the next. The level of effort required makes this among the most arduous household tasks requiring repeated intervention.

There are a number of induction threads if you do a search for the word, they should pop up. I traded my electric for a Samsung Chef induction double oven with warming drawer. The drawer is really low and since it's just DH and me, we don't turn it on and use it for storage. I think it bakes unevenly, although it has two baking "modes" and although we use the small top oven, which fits a smaller roasting pan, we rarely need both ovens. It is convertible to one oven. But I would never go back to an electric top over an induction. Never. As I said in another thread, I've actually been using a Tovala counter top combi-steam oven because I love the way it cooks but it is a one or two person appliance.

We had a Kenmore range that had a second smaller oven on top of the large one. You sacrifice pan storage at the bottom, but that top oven would hit 400 in just a few minutes. The house I just moved into has a Frigidaire dual oven stove, only the small oven is on the bottom. I liked the Kenmore better as I used the smaller oven more frequently and the top spot was easier to access.

I'm sorry that I can't find the exact range on Sears' site now. But, we've had a slide in electric, radiant smooth top, stainless, convection, Kenmore range for a few years now. For the most part it's worked well. I stupidly did not try self-cleaning before the warranty is up and I am now afraid to try it (because I've heard horror stories of the self clean damaging things on ovens). But otherwise the range has worked well. It has a convection oven and digital controls (which I really like). I think it was around $2k a few years ago.

Assuming they can't/won't "downgrade" to a smaller range (smaller oven = quicker preheat, almost universally), LG claims that their "dual convection" ranges preheat 30% faster than competitors...but I haven't tried it firsthand, so can't comment on how well it actually works.

I have a GE cafe Range. It's not a slide in, but it looks like one. Got great ratings from Consumer Reports (if you care about those things).

I really like it!! Easy to keep clean, self cleaning oven and stainless. The bottom drawer is an oven, but I have never used it for anything other than storing a cast iron griddle.
