I've always liked the idea of having spice storage between the studs. It's the perfect depth for spice bottles and you can see them all easily. Or a very shallow cabinet facing out 90 degrees on the end of a full height pantry.

I thought it wasn't good for spices to be exposed to light - it could make them 'wear out" faster? Maybe it's a concern for me, since I don't cook much with spices, and I need to keep them good as long as I can!

I like the idea of storing measuring spoons with spices. Makes sense...although the cooking/mixing utensil drawer in my new kitchen will be directly below the spice area, so they will sort of be together anyhow...no special spice holder thing for me, though - don't have enough spices to justify that.

I keep my spices on a three tiered Lazy Susan in an upper corner cabinet near the stove. More frequently used spices, salt, and taller/heavier cooking spices are on the bottom tier, sugar in a glass container, sprinkles, baking powder/soda, extracts and other smaller spices are on the middle tier, and lesser used, smaller items on the top. Sometimes a bottle falls off to the side, which is annoying, but it works pretty well overall.

We have a 12" wide space next to the stove in our small galley...we did a spice pullout on the upper cabinet and a cookie sheet/cutting board cabinet on the bottom.

juddgirl, do we share a kitchen? I have an 11" wide 3-shelf cupboard, holds 3 lazy susans with the spices. A-L on the bottom, M-? in the middle, vanilla, sugars, and blends on top. (The partner cupboard holds teas and a canister of kibble)

I would love to have them in a drawer but not sure how. I've seen the slanted dividers for displaying them in drawers, but I know that not all of the bottles shapes would fit that design. I've thought about changing out all the bottles to a standard size and using a label maker to mark the tops so that I can put them all standing upright in a drawer - just not sure if that's worth the effort.

That is pretty much what I did, and it was definately worth the effort. I designed some drawers that were high enough for the bottles I wanted to store, including some half pint canning jars that I use for bay leaves and that sort of thing.

bpathome - it sounds like your cabinet is much more organized than mine! I never thought of organizing them that way but it's a great idea.

A bit OT but I really like my lazy susans - am planning a remodel and was just telling my DH I want to keep my upper and lower corner storage cabinets. I have a 2-tier lazy susan in the bottom cabinet, and put boxes of tea and protein powder on the top shelf and serving bowls/dishes on the bottom shelf. Great storage!

I use Penzeys spices and like to write the date received on the bottle. This way, I know how old the spices are. I'll buy some spices I use more frequently in bulk and store these in the freezer in a ziplock.

In my old kitchen, I had a large three tier lazy susan in an upper cabinet which worked well.

I had DH make some custom spice holders for the cabinet doors. Baking spices are on the cabinet door above my baking area and most commonly used cooking spices are on the door to the side of my cooktop and on the next one over. Of course, I have plenty of others which float through the cabinets. Maybe I'll ask DH to make a few more holders for me for Christmas...

Not being handy at building things, I just went with the drawer. I just put things away last weekend, but lots of spiices fit in this drawer, and bigger ones, as well as oils, are on the shelf in upper cabinet.

I did a lot of cooking for T-day (first time in 2 months), and the arrangement seems to be working fine.
