Just so you won't think I took your advice and ran...

Back in August I asked for help with my layout and many of you were so generous to offer advice. Since then we have had to put our plans on hold because of unexpected illnesses and surgeries, DH and MIL. Just didn't want ya'll to think I took your advice and ran!!! Hopefully I'll be able to get back with it soon...

How nice of you, Onerae. Sorry to hear what's happening, but life is so common. Some people, hitting a roadblock, actually post here for years, dreaming, turning over ideas, playing with other people's kitchens, until they are able to start up their projects again. Looking forward to more of yours when it's fun time again.

I used the polymer to plant the Newhall garden in 1989. From personal experience, do not mix up a largish batch of it without wearing a face mask. The dust will rehydrate inside your body and won't come out. I figured if I hydrated it with liquid fertilizer, it would provide some feeding for some time. Then, I got the "bright idea" of hydrating it with fish emulsion. Stupidly, I admit it, I hydrated a forty-four gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck trash can full of polymer/fish emulsion. Except, how much can you actually USE in one day? Picture it...summer, mid California desert, high nineties to low triple digits, no shelter, only a large trash can with a lid in that heat.... The next day off when I hit the garden, there MUST have been something dead! It was the trash can. I dug an enormous hole to fit the whole, slimy, "dead" mess. It took quite a bit to cover it and I figured something was sure to dig it up, but nothing did. Several years later, we had a strong El Nino. The ground broke open and black 'slime' oozed from the cracks. I figured it had to be something pretty terrible as this was "virgin" ground where no homes had ever stood and no crops ever planted. Polymer... It was mixed, wet, into the soil in 1989. It prevented all gopher activity in the areas in which it was used all the way though 2007 when the garden had to be dismantled. Digging up well established plants, I found the polymer still hydrated with roots grown through it. Fortunately, there was NO evidence of the "dead" fish emulsion. A friend told me he successfully used the polymer against the gophers. His theory was they would eat the polymer along with the roots and it would absorb the fluids in their intestines. You can extrapolate what probably happened internally. All I can swear by is, gophers were frequent issues in all the beds of that garden EXCEPT those planted with the soil polymer. I would use it again, IF I could buy it wholesale as I could in 1989. Then, I was able to buy a whole pound of the stuff for $15. A pound goes a LONG way! Kim

I'm one who likes to be a guest when I am a guest, and likes to be the hostess and treat my guests as guests when I'm hostess. In other words, I feel no compulsion to help clean up at others' homes, and I do not allow my guests to help clean up at my house. I tell people point blank, I wish to do my own dishes and that they are guests and should have a seat and let me worry about the dishes. I will usually do a quick rinse/organization of dishes but not a real clean up or loading of the DW. Now, as to your friend, here's how I'd handle it, since she's already in this habit. Next time she gets up with her plate, I'd immediately get up and meet her in the kitchen. As soon as she put her plate down, I'd give her a hug, and then instead of fully releasing the hug, I'd hold her at the shoulders or arms so that we were eye to eye. Then I'd say something like, "Debbie, You are such a sweetheart to always help me with the dishes. I appreciate your thoughtfulness! But to be honest, it makes me very uncomfortable for you to be doing that here. You're the guest, and I actually prefer to do my own clean up in my kitchen, just because I like to do things my own way. So please, sit down, and enjoy the gathering, and don't give clean up another thought." This accomplishes a couple of things. First of all, it doesn't make her feel bad because you start out by saying how nice she is. Holding her close as you speak sends the message that this is a serious talk, not just a polite aside. It's also done in the kitchen, away from the other guests. If she still insists, I'd take her by the hand and lead her back to her seat. In other words, be gentle, complimentary, sweet, etc, but FIRM.

I like it too when people show the "after" pictures, but I understand why it doesn't always happen--those walls were painted before Thanksgiving and it's taken this long. The color is actually a bit off the Audubon, which is more gray-blue-green, but the walls are strictly blue gray. I could have gone a little greener, but I have Buxton Blue where the red wall ends on the other side and didn't want to repeat myself. Silly really, it's a beautiful color. But I am glad the off-white is gone.

Onerae...I'm sorry to hear about the delay in your plans and the problems your family is experiencing. I pray things will get better soon so you can get back on track with your kitchen plans.

However, I can certainly relate. We are purchasing my MIL's house where we plan to put on an addition and remodel the kitchen. The day before we were to put our house on the market, my DH got laid off. It is suppose to be a temporary thing, but he probably won't go back till after the 1st of the year. Anyway, we had to put our plans on hold for now. So in the meantime, I am just planning out my kitchen so when the time comes, I'll have all my ducks in a row.

Life happens, onerae. I think everyone here has experienced that in one way or another. It's nice of you to come back and thank those awesome people who offer layout help (not my area of competence, but I love that there are generous people who do a great job of this).

Hope things get better on the home front and you get to dust off your plans and try again sometime soon.

We moved into our house 6 years ago and had the architect over the very next day to do plans. We had hopes of renovating right away. Well... life and budget got in the way and it took another 5 years to start the actual work and it is still not finished. I bet more people than not find that the end date gets pushed back for one of a variety of reasons.
I hope your family issues are resolved in a good way very soon and you are on to a happier chaos.

Before I found this forum, we had to delay our plans a couple of times too. We dealt with the other issues and our kitchen wound up the better for it as we kept refining our ideas about what worked and what could be better. The microwave drawer came along in the meantime and helped our layout issues. I was about ready to give up all cooking by the time we got to it, but we came out ahead of where we would have been.

Also meant to say hang in there -- it will be worth it, for your kitchen and your family (just in case that wasn't obvious). Hope DH and MIL are both smoothly on the mend.

yup, the setbacks are hard, but at the end of the day i am actually glad of the extra time. i got to really live with my plan for a while, and the end result is going to be a killer space.

hope your family's health issues have resolved.
