Kitchen granite/fireplace surround HELP please!

I have a small house with an open floor plan and the stone walkway, kitchen granite and tile and cabinets and fireplace can all be seen from several angles. I can't decide on a cast stone type of fireplace surround, or tile, or just leave it alone.

Any recommendations are very much welcome!

Our house sounds similar to yours. Our kitchen connects with our familyroom, too. Our kitchen cabinets are dark cherry & the granite is Giallo Ornamental. The floor in the kitchen & familyroom is white oak, finished in a medium brown. Our fireplace hearth is the same level as the floor. We used a brushed cream marble on the surround & hearth, so the finish is matte. The fireplace mantel and the wood around the fireplace are Navajo White---about the same color as the marble. We like the cream marble against the cream color wood. We considered using a brown marble for the surround & hearth but were concered that it would give the overall appearance of a big dark hole in the fireplace area.

I'd recommend staying away from the blue. We tried some blues with our stone. In the kitchen we had a light blue on the small wall area around the sink window and it was much better when we repainted to white. The stone has so many blues. Also the color of blue from the stone changes in a different way with light than the paint color does. That makes it really difficult to find a blue that goes with and enhances the stone. The blue paint just seemed to by trying to hard to match and not succeeding. On the other hand, the Fragrant Cloves warm reddish brown works well with the blues and references the rust tones in the stone. That is similar to the effect that we get with the natural cherry cabinets around our stone.

I'm a little confused. Your drawing says tile but your post says slab. Did you change plans from tile to slab after the drawing? Also, your drawing shows a dimension of 5'2" across the bottom which equals 62", but that appears to cover columns plus surround width of 6" + 44" + 6" which equals 46". Granite fabrication pricing can vary a lot depending on where you are and also from fabricator to fabricator. Are there any edge details or such that cause extra fabrication time? Our fireplace surround is very similar in size. The material for the surround is left over from our kitchen remodel and we bought a small slab for our hearth. Our quote is just labor - $600 for fab and installation. It is very simple - no fancy edges. 8" wide, but that probably doesn't make much difference to the quote. Ours is also taller - 54" - and a bit wider - 52". Our surround is being fabbed as 3 rectangular pieces - a top and 2 sides because of the size of our remnants. A fabricator might charge more to fab and install a similar surround as one piece. There would be more chance of breakage I think and it might take an extra installer to handle the weight of the surround. I think that it would have cost more if we used the fabricator who did our kitchen.

We had a similar situation, and purchased inexpensive (but lovely!) carrara marble subway tile at Lowes (or was it Home Depot?), and tiled right over some existing tile. Voila!

Wow... thanks for answering... I like the Bordeaux too. I forgot to mention it sticks out 10" at the top and tapers to about 4" at the bottom... Do you think I have room for 10" depth in my 12' x12' room that opens out but is still small????

I can't tell from the pictures how much of the black fireplace front is something that can be covered and how much is opening or vents. The windows are pretty close on either side - how much room do you have for the surround? It seems like one might overlap the windows - if the legs fit, there still is where something like where the Bordeaux flares out wider for the mantle.

We did a very simple surround by facing it with remnants from our kitchen quartzite. We felt that the stone at the side had to cover at least 6" to not look too skimpy with the fireplace front. I think we ended up making it around 8".

Actually the bordeaux legs don't flare out more than the mantle and it would fit; these 2 are the only ones that fit from the company though it would be tight as the windows are close. I would like to do the kitchen leftover granite but the granite is too busy for me to live with so I'm looking for something more simple. And this is taking me way too long. The outside of the house is also a contemporary Craftsman type with a lot of straight lines so I'm wondering if that matters. But the kitchen cabinets have some curves. Help1!

I like the concrete one too. Could you pull in your granite for the floor piece that is typically done with brick?
